Shopify is a hosted e-commerce platform for creating and operating online stores. It provides storefront hosting, checkout, payments, inventory management, order management, and integrations without requiring merchants to maintain their own ecommerce infrastructure.
Businesses can use Shopify for direct-to-consumer brands, retail, dropshipping, print-on-demand, and other online selling models. Its main tradeoff is convenience versus recurring platform, payment, and app costs.
Item | Details |
|---|---|
Main use | Building and operating an online store |

Free plan | No permanent full online-store free plan |
Basic | $39/month or $29/month billed yearly |

Current U.S. Shopify pricing is:
Plan | Monthly Billing | Annual Billing Equivalent |
|---|---|---|
Basic | $39/month | $29/month |
Grow | $105/month | $79/month |
Advanced | $399/month | $299/month |
Plus | Starts at $2,300/month | Custom contract structure |
Shopify currently offers a short free trial followed by promotional introductory pricing in eligible markets, but promotional offers can change.
For most new stores, Basic is the practical starting point.
Higher plans mainly become relevant when a business needs features such as:
Additional staff accounts
Lower payment rates
Advanced international selling
More complex reporting
Advanced shipping
Larger operational teams
Do not choose Advanced simply because the store expects higher sales. Compare the actual fee savings and required features against the additional subscription cost.
Shopify Payments is Shopify's integrated payment processor.
Current starting U.S. online card rates include:
Plan | Online Card Rate |
|---|---|
Basic | From 2.9% + $0.30 |
Grow | From 2.7% + $0.30 |
Advanced | From 2.5% + $0.30 |
Plus | From 2.25% + $0.30 |
Rates can vary by market, card type, and payment method.
When Shopify Payments is used as the payment provider, Shopify generally does not add an additional third-party transaction fee to those transactions.
Shopify supports more than 100 third-party credit card payment providers.
If you use a third-party payment provider, Shopify can charge an additional transaction fee on top of the payment processor's own fee.
This is important because the effective payment cost can become:
Payment processor fee + Shopify third-party transaction fee
The applicable Shopify fee depends on the plan and market.
For most stores in countries where Shopify Payments is available, Shopify Payments is therefore usually the simplest starting option.
A normal Shopify workflow looks like:
Add product → Build storefront → Connect payment method → Configure shipping → Customer orders → Payment captured → Fulfill order → Track sales
Shopify handles much of the infrastructure required to operate an ecommerce site, including:
Hosting
Checkout
Product catalog
Inventory
Orders
Customer accounts
Payments
Discounts
Basic analytics
Multichannel selling
The seller remains responsible for the underlying business:
Choosing products
Sourcing
Pricing
Marketing
Customer service
Profitability
For the broader business model, see Shopify Store.
Create a Shopify account and start with Basic unless another plan has a clear business requirement.
Shopify creates a temporary store domain that can be replaced with a custom domain later.
A product normally needs:
Title
Description
Images
Price
Inventory
Variants
Shipping information
Start with a small number of properly configured products rather than importing a large catalog before understanding the store workflow.
Shopify provides free themes and also has a paid Theme Store.
A theme controls much of the storefront presentation.
Before buying a premium theme, check whether the free theme can already support:
Product pages
Navigation
Collections
Mobile layouts
Brand styling
A premium theme is not automatically better for conversion.
You can:
Buy a domain through Shopify
Connect a domain from another registrar
Transfer an existing domain
A custom domain is normally preferable before publicly launching a serious store.
Activate Shopify Payments when available or choose an appropriate third-party provider.
Verify:
Processing fees
Shopify revolves around several core objects:
Products → Collections → Customers → Orders → Fulfillment → Payments
A product can contain variants such as:
T-shirt → Small / Medium / Large → Black / White
Each variant can have its own:
SKU
Price
Inventory
Weight
Barcode
Keep variant structures simple when possible.
Extremely complicated variant combinations can make inventory and product-page management harder.
Collections group products together.
Examples:
Men's Shoes
New Arrivals
Sale
Under $50
Collections help customers navigate a larger catalog and can also create useful landing pages for marketing and SEO.
When a customer purchases:
Checkout → Payment → Order created → Fulfillment → Shipment notification
The Shopify admin becomes the central place for monitoring order status and payment status.
Source product → Create Shopify listing → Drive traffic → Customer purchases → Fulfill order → Follow up through email
This is the standard independent ecommerce model.
Unlike Amazon or eBay, the business controls its own storefront.
The main difficulty is traffic.
Creating the Shopify store does not automatically create customers.
Create design → Connect POD provider → Publish Shopify product → Customer purchases → Provider fulfills → Tracking syncs to Shopify
Platforms such as Printful and Printify can automate fulfillment.
This removes most inventory risk but introduces:
Higher unit costs
Fulfillment fees
Shipping costs
Calculate margins before advertising.
Content → Product page → Email capture → Purchase → Repeat marketing
A creator or publisher can use content from:
YouTube
SEO
Social media
Newsletter
to generate traffic to Shopify.
The store then becomes the conversion infrastructure rather than the primary source of demand.
Most new stores do not need Grow or Advanced immediately.
Upgrade when the financial or operational benefit is measurable.
For example:
Higher plan cost → Lower payment fees + needed staff/features
If the savings and benefits exceed the additional subscription cost, upgrading makes sense.
Do not calculate:
Retail price − product cost = profit
Use:
Retail price
− product cost
− payment processing
− shipping subsidy
− marketplace or app costs
− advertising
− returns
= contribution margin
A store can generate significant revenue while still losing money.
The Shopify App Store is powerful, but app subscriptions can accumulate quickly.
Before installing an app, ask:
Is the feature already built into Shopify?
Does this solve an actual problem?
What does it cost annually?
Does it slow down the storefront?
A $20/month app seems inexpensive in isolation.
Ten similar subscriptions become:
$200/month
before the Shopify plan itself.
Complete a real or test checkout on:
Desktop
Mobile
Check:
Shopify can operate the main store for a direct-to-consumer brand.
The business controls:
Brand experience
Pricing
Products
Customer communication
This provides more independence than relying only on Amazon or eBay.
Shopify can be connected to suppliers that fulfill products after an order is placed.
This is part of the broader Dropshipping business model.
The platform makes store setup easy, but it does not solve common dropshipping problems such as:
Supplier reliability
Shipping delays
Weak margins
Advertising costs
Apps and integrations can extend Shopify for digital products.
Businesses selling primarily downloads may also want to compare Shopify with specialized platforms such as Gumroad.
Shopify POS allows businesses to connect physical retail with the online store.
Inventory and customer data can be managed across channels.
POS Pro is currently available as an additional paid service, listed at:
$89/month per location
on Shopify's U.S. pricing page.
Shopify has a large app and integration ecosystem.
Common categories include:
Email marketing
Advertising
Reviews
Customer support
Shipping
Accounting
Print on demand
Dropshipping
Analytics
Subscriptions
Representative integrations include tools such as:
Meta
Mailchimp
Printful
Printify
Use native Shopify functionality when it already solves the problem adequately.
Add an app when the additional functionality has a clear operational or revenue benefit.
Developers can use Shopify APIs to build:
Custom storefronts
Internal tools
Product integrations
Fulfillment systems
Custom apps
This becomes useful when a normal Shopify theme and apps cannot support the required workflow.
Most new stores do not need custom API development.
Shopify Plus is intended for more complex businesses.
Current pricing starts at:
$2,300/month
Features include capabilities such as:
Greater checkout customization
Unlimited staff accounts
Expanded B2B capabilities
Higher API limits
Enterprise support
For a normal small ecommerce business, Plus is generally unnecessary.
Real Shopify costs can include:
Subscription
Payment processing
Apps
Themes
Domain
Advertising
Shipping tools
Calculate the full software stack rather than only the headline Shopify subscription.
When using an external payment provider, Shopify's third-party transaction fee can apply in addition to the provider's own processing fees.
Verify payment economics before choosing a provider.
A polished store with no acquisition strategy can still receive almost no sales.
The seller still needs demand.
Too many apps can increase:
Cost
Page weight
Compatibility issues
Administrative complexity
Remove apps that no longer provide meaningful value.
Shopify hosts the store infrastructure.
Businesses depend on Shopify for:
Checkout
Platform policies
Subscription pricing
App ecosystem
Core infrastructure
Maintaining customer data, domain ownership, and external marketing channels helps reduce dependence.
Platform | Best Fit | Main Difference |
|---|---|---|
Shopify | Businesses wanting a managed ecommerce platform | Hosting and core commerce infrastructure included |
WooCommerce | WordPress users wanting more control | Open-source and self-hosted |
Etsy | Sellers wanting marketplace demand | Built-in marketplace rather than independent storefront |
Amazon | Products benefiting from large marketplace traffic | Marketplace-first model with stronger platform dependence |
Choose Shopify when:
You want a dedicated branded online store
You prefer managed hosting
You want a large ecommerce app ecosystem
You do not want to maintain WordPress infrastructure
Choose WooCommerce when:
You already use WordPress
You want more infrastructure control
Open-source flexibility matters
Choose a marketplace when existing buyer traffic matters more than owning the storefront.
Current U.S. monthly pricing starts at $39/month for Basic.
Annual billing lowers the effective Basic price to $29/month.
Grow is $105/month monthly or $79/month annually, and Advanced is $399/month monthly or $299/month annually.
Shopify Payments charges payment-processing fees.
If you use an eligible third-party payment provider, Shopify can also charge an additional third-party transaction fee depending on your plan and market.
Yes.
Hosting for the Shopify storefront is included with the platform.
No.
Shopify supports more than 100 third-party credit card payment providers, although additional Shopify transaction fees can apply when using them.
Neither is universally better.
Shopify generally reduces technical maintenance.
WooCommerce provides greater control over hosting, WordPress, and the underlying store environment.
Shopify provides ecommerce infrastructure and sales-channel integrations, but merchants are still responsible for customer acquisition through channels such as advertising, SEO, social media, email, or an existing audience.
Supported currencies
Payout schedule
Refund rules
Chargeback rules
Set up:
Shipping zones
Shipping rates
Free-shipping thresholds
Delivery options
Tax settings
Then place a complete test order before opening the store to real customers.
Product selection
Cart
Shipping
Discounts
Payment
Confirmation emails
Do this after major theme, payment, or app changes.
As the catalog grows, organize products around customer intent.
For example:
Running Shoes
Walking Shoes
Trail Shoes
is generally easier to navigate than forcing customers through hundreds of unrelated product pages.
A new store often needs better:
Products
Offers
Traffic
Images
Copy
more than custom code.
Validate that customers want the product before spending heavily on advanced storefront development.
Shopify provides the store.
It does not automatically provide traffic.
Customer acquisition may come from:
Google Ads
Meta Ads
SEO
Social media
Influencers
Affiliates
Treat the store platform and marketing strategy as separate decisions.
