Dropshipping is an e-commerce fulfillment model in which a seller takes customer orders without stocking the products themselves. After a sale, a supplier or fulfillment provider ships the product directly to the customer, while the seller remains responsible for pricing, customer acquisition, customer service, refunds, and the overall buying experience.
Item | Practical benchmark |
|---|---|
Inventory required before sale | Usually none |
Main revenue | Retail price minus supplier, fulfillment, platform, payment, advertising, refund, and other costs |
Common sales channels | Independent store, eBay, Amazon, other marketplaces |
Common supplier tools | DSers, AliExpress, direct wholesalers |
Print-on-demand option | Printful and similar fulfillment services |
DSers entry plan | Free |
Shopify Basic | US$29/mo when billed annually; US$39/mo monthly |
Main operational dependency | Supplier inventory, product quality, fulfillment speed, and tracking |
Major risks | Thin margins, advertising costs, supplier problems, refunds, long cross-border delivery, marketplace-policy violations |
Dropshipping removes the need to buy inventory before receiving customer orders, but it does not remove normal retail responsibilities. The seller still needs customers, a viable selling price, reliable fulfillment, customer support, and sufficient cash flow to pay suppliers and absorb refunds or disputes.
Dropshipping earnings vary substantially by product, acquisition channel, supplier arrangement, geography, and sales platform.
Shopify's 2026 dropshipping guidance states that businesses using open marketplaces commonly operate at profit margins of approximately 10%–15%.[1][1]This is Shopify's stated range for open-marketplace dropshipping and should not be treated as a measured distribution for every dropshipping business.
A separate 2026 Shopify comparison cites data from ecommerce profit-tracking service TrueProfit showing an average 21% net profit margin for dropshipping companies between January and July 2026, compared with 28% for direct-to-consumer companies in the dataset.[2][2]This figure describes businesses measured by TrueProfit during that period rather than all dropshipping sellers globally.
These figures illustrate an important distinction: gross product markup is not the same as net profit.
A seller may have a large difference between the supplier price and retail price but still lose money after:
payment-processing fees;
marketplace fees;
advertising;
refunds;
chargebacks;
shipping subsidies;
software;
The basic transaction is:
Customer pays seller → Seller pays supplier → Supplier ships to customer
The seller keeps the amount remaining after all costs.
The economically useful calculation is:
Selling price − product cost − shipping − transaction/platform fees − customer acquisition cost − refunds and other operating costs = profit
The seller normally does not receive a special commission from the supplier. Instead, the business relies on buying or sourcing the product below the amount ultimately paid by the customer.
The seller lists existing supplier products at a higher retail price.
This is the model commonly associated with AliExpress and DSers.
A seller establishes a relationship directly with a wholesaler, manufacturer, or distributor that agrees to fulfill individual customer orders.
This can provide more control than sourcing from a public marketplace, particularly when order volume becomes large enough to negotiate pricing, packaging, or fulfillment terms.
Print on Demand is a specialized form of dropshipping in which products are created only after an order is received.
Services such as Printful can print apparel, accessories, and other customized products and ship them directly to buyers.
Printful currently offers a Free plan with no monthly subscription required. Product and fulfillment costs are charged when orders are placed; shipping, taxes, and some additional product options are separate.
Dropshipping does not require purchasing a warehouse or initial stock.
The cheapest realistic setup depends on the sales channel.
Requirement | Minimum option | Cost | Priority | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Computer | Existing computer | $0 additional | Essential | Used for store and order management |
Store platform | Shopify Basic | US$29/mo annually | Recommended | US$39/mo if billed monthly |
Supplier integration | DSers Basic | Free | Optional | Useful for AliExpress-style sourcing |
Domain | Custom domain | Paid | Recommended | Price depends on registrar and TLD |
Product samples | Supplier sample orders |
The seller first identifies products that can be sourced reliably at a price that leaves room for the remaining costs of the transaction.
Relevant supplier checks include:
product price;
shipping price;
available shipping destinations;
processing time;
inventory reliability;
tracking availability;
return handling;
product quality;
packaging;
whether invoices or supplier branding appear in the parcel.
Ordering samples is useful when product quality, packaging, or actual delivery time cannot be established from the listing alone.
Supplier tools can reduce manual work.
DSers, for example, connects stores with supplier sources and provides product importing, bulk ordering, order synchronization, and supplier-management functionality. Shopify describes DSers as a common tool for sourcing products from AliExpress.
Listings still need accurate:
An independent store provides more control over branding, pricing, customer relationships, and supplier selection.
It also means the operator must generate their own traffic.
Common acquisition channels include:
paid social advertising;
search advertising;
organic search;
social media;
influencers;
email;
communities;
content marketing.
The lack of built-in marketplace demand is one of the most important economic differences between an independent store and an established marketplace.
eBay explicitly allows dropshipping when fulfillment comes directly from a wholesale supplier.
However, eBay does not allow a seller to list a product and then purchase it from another retailer or marketplace that ships it directly to the eBay customer. The seller also remains responsible for safe delivery within the stated delivery period and customer satisfaction.
For sellers on eBay.com in the United States, most categories currently have a 13.6% final value fee on the total sale amount up to US$7,500, plus a per-order fee. Rates differ by category and country.
This illustrates how marketplace fees can materially reduce dropshipping margins.
The 13.6% figure is specific to applicable eBay.com categories and should not be treated as a global eBay fee.
Amazon permits dropshipping only under specific conditions.
The seller must remain the seller of record, be identified as the seller on packing slips and related material, accept and process returns, and comply with Amazon's seller policies.
Using another online retailer to fulfill an Amazon order can violate the policy when the parcel, invoice, or packaging identifies the other retailer rather than the Amazon seller. Violations can result in restrictions on seller-fulfilled listings.
This makes marketplace-to-marketplace retail arbitrage materially different from a compliant wholesale-supplier dropshipping relationship.
Tool | Price | Level | Main use |
|---|---|---|---|
DSers | Free; Advanced US$19.90/mo | Beginner | Supplier and order automation |
Basic from US$29/mo annually | Beginner | Independent ecommerce store | |
Free; Growth US$24.99/mo | Beginner | Print-on-demand fulfillment | |
Core software Free | Intermediate | Self-hosted ecommerce store | |
Free | Intermediate | Traffic and conversion measurement |
DSers' paid plans primarily add scale and automation rather than making dropshipping possible in the first place. Its Free plan supports basic order processing, while paid tiers add features such as automatic inventory and price synchronization.
Dropshipping reduces inventory investment but does not remove most other ecommerce expenses.
The supplier charges for each order.
This can include:
product cost;
shipping;
custom packaging;
branding;
additional fulfillment services.
The seller needs enough margin above these amounts to cover the rest of the business.
A hosted ecommerce store may charge a monthly subscription.
Shopify Basic currently costs US$29/mo with annual billing or US$39/mo with monthly billing.
Self-hosted alternatives can remove the platform subscription but introduce hosting and maintenance costs.
Independent stores normally pay payment-processing fees.
Rates differ by payment provider and country, so one country's Stripe or Shopify Payments rate should not be treated as a global dropshipping cost.
Marketplaces can take a substantial percentage of the selling price.
For example, most categories on the U.S. eBay site currently use a 13.6% final value fee up to US$7,500, plus a per-order fee.
Advertising can become one of the largest costs in a dropshipping business.
Unlike inventory, advertising is generally paid before the seller knows whether the traffic will convert into profitable orders.
The relevant metric is not merely cost per click but:
Customer acquisition cost compared with profit available before advertising
A product can have a positive product markup and still lose money if customer acquisition costs exceed the remaining contribution from each order.
Returns and refunds are particularly important when:
the product arrives late;
Dropshipping is often cross-border because the seller, supplier, and customer may each be located in different countries.
This can create:
import duties;
VAT or sales taxes;
customs declarations;
currency conversion;
restricted products;
local consumer-protection requirements;
longer delivery times;
local product-safety rules.
There is no single global dropshipping tax treatment.
For example, the EU's Import One-Stop Shop (IOSS) can apply to eligible goods shipped from outside the EU to EU consumers where the consignment does not exceed €150.
EU import rules are also changing. Shopify's current compliance guidance notes that from July 1, 2026, the EU began removing the previous €150 customs-duty exemption, with an interim €3 flat-rate duty per item on certain low-value imports.
These are EU-specific rules and should not be generalized to customers in other regions.
Dropshipping does not have a universal license or certification.
The seller may nevertheless need:
legally appropriate business registration;
tax registration;
payment-processing account;
marketplace seller account;
supplier agreement;
return and refund policy;
privacy disclosures;
compliant product labeling;
applicable safety certifications;
customs and import procedures.
Requirements depend on the seller's location, the customer's location, and the type of product.
The fact that the seller never physically handles the product does not necessarily remove product-safety or consumer-law obligations.
Shopify's legal guidance explicitly states that dropshipping merchants need to comply with applicable laws as retailers of the products they sell, including product-safety, product-liability, refund, and regional consumer requirements.
In the United States, the FTC's Mail, Internet, or Telephone Order Merchandise Rule generally requires sellers to have a reasonable basis for advertised shipping times. If no shipping time is stated, the seller normally needs a reasonable basis to expect shipment within 30 days; delays can trigger consent and refund obligations.
This is a U.S. requirement, not a worldwide shipping rule.
Low inventory risk does not mean low business risk. A seller can avoid purchasing inventory in advance but still lose money through advertising, refunds, marketplace fees, disputes, and software costs.
The seller has limited fulfillment control. Supplier inventory changes, incorrect products, damaged goods, slow processing, and tracking failures affect the seller's reputation even though the supplier performs fulfillment.
Marketplace rules can prohibit common sourcing practices. Both eBay and Amazon distinguish legitimate supplier dropshipping from some forms of purchasing products from another retailer after receiving the customer order.
Cross-border shipping adds tax and customs complexity. The seller, supplier, and buyer may be located in three different jurisdictions, creating obligations that do not exist in domestic fulfillment.
Thin margins make customer acquisition critical. Shopify's stated 10%–15% open-marketplace margin range leaves limited room for advertising mistakes, refunds, or unexpected fulfillment costs.
taxes;
customer support.
For this reason, revenue alone is particularly misleading for dropshipping.

Shopify is only one possible store platform and is not required for dropshipping.
A seller can instead use WooCommerce, another hosted ecommerce platform, or an online marketplace.
Shopify's current Basic plan costs US$29/mo when billed annually or US$39/mo month-to-month.
DSers currently offers a Free Basic plan supporting up to 3 stores and 3,000 products. Its Advanced plan is US$19.90/mo and Pro is US$49.90/mo.
The practical minimum cash requirement can therefore be relatively low if the seller already has a computer and initially uses free supplier and marketing tools.
However, this does not mean a serious dropshipping business can operate indefinitely at near-zero cost. Customer acquisition can become much larger than the software bill.
prices;
product descriptions;
delivery expectations;
variant information;
refund terms;
product images;
availability.
When the customer checks out, the order enters the seller's store or marketplace account.
The seller then sends or synchronizes the order with the supplier.
In an automated integration:
Customer → Store → Dropshipping app → Supplier → Customer
The supplier picks, packs, and ships the item.
The seller generally remains the customer's point of contact.
The seller needs to monitor:
supplier processing;
tracking creation;
shipment movement;
late orders;
lost parcels;
delivery disputes.
A seller that never physically handles the product still receives the customer complaint when the supplier makes a mistake.
Customers normally deal with the seller rather than the supplier.
This means the seller needs a process for:
damaged products;
wrong products;
missing packages;
returns;
refunds;
chargebacks;
supplier reimbursement.
Printful's Free plan requires no monthly subscription. Its optional Growth plan costs US$24.99/mo and provides product-price discounts and other benefits.
tracking fails;
the item differs from the listing;
product quality is inconsistent;
international returns are expensive.
A supplier refund and a customer refund are separate events. The seller may need to refund the customer even when recovering money from the supplier is difficult.
