WooCommerce is a free, open-source e-commerce platform built for WordPress. It allows businesses to turn a self-hosted WordPress website into an online store while retaining control over hosting, store data, design, payment providers, and extensions.
Unlike hosted platforms that charge a fixed platform subscription, the core WooCommerce software is free. However, operating a real store usually involves separate costs for web hosting, a domain, payment processing, premium extensions, themes, and potentially development or maintenance.
Item | Details |
|---|---|
Core WooCommerce software | Free and open source |
Required platform | WordPress |
Hosting | Purchased separately |
Domain | Purchased separately |
WooCommerce transaction fee | None on core WooCommerce |
Payment processing | Depends on payment gateway |
WooPayments monthly fee | None for online payments |
WooPayments U.S. card fee | 2.9% + $0.30 for standard card transactions |
Store ownership | Self-hosted store and data |
Extensions | Free and paid options |
Best suited for | Businesses wanting flexibility and control |
WooCommerce itself does not charge a percentage of every store transaction. Payment gateways such as WooPayments, Stripe, PayPal, or other providers normally charge their own processing fees.
WooCommerce is installed as a plugin on a WordPress website.
A basic setup works like this:
Register a domain.
Purchase WordPress-compatible hosting.
Install WordPress.
Install the WooCommerce plugin.
Configure products, taxes, shipping, and store settings.
Connect a payment gateway.
Choose a theme and customize the storefront.
Add extensions when additional functionality is required.
Launch the store and manage orders through WordPress.
Because WooCommerce is self-hosted, the merchant has significantly more control over the underlying website than with many hosted e-commerce platforms.
That flexibility also means the merchant is responsible for more of the technical environment.
The WooCommerce plugin itself is free, but a production store is rarely completely free.
Cost | Typical Structure |
|---|---|
WooCommerce core | Free |
Web hosting | Recurring |
Domain | Usually annual |
Payment processing | Per transaction |
Premium theme | Optional |
Premium extensions | Optional, often annual |
Development | Optional |
Maintenance | Depends on setup |
Hosting prices vary significantly depending on store traffic, performance requirements, support, backups, security, and infrastructure.
For this reason, there is no single official WooCommerce monthly price comparable to a fixed Shopify plan.
WooCommerce supports multiple payment gateways.
Examples include:
WooPayments
Stripe
PayPal
Amazon Pay
Local payment providers
Bank transfers
Cash on delivery
The core WooCommerce platform does not charge its own transaction fee simply because an order was processed.
The payment provider normally charges the processing fee.
WooPayments is WooCommerce's integrated payment system.
It can be managed directly from the WordPress dashboard and supports payment management, refunds, disputes, payouts, and multiple payment methods.
WooPayments has:
No setup fee
No monthly fee for standard online payment processing
Pay-as-you-go transaction pricing
Fees depend on the merchant's country, customer's country, currency, and payment method.
For U.S. merchants, standard card pricing is currently:
Transaction | Fee |
|---|---|
Card payment | 2.9% + $0.30 |
International card | Additional 1.5% |
Currency conversion | Additional 1.0% |
Dispute | $15 |
Instant payout | 1.5% |
Other payment methods have different rates.
For example, buy-now-pay-later services such as Affirm, Afterpay, and Klarna can carry substantially higher processing fees than ordinary card payments.
Merchants outside the United States should check the WooPayments fee schedule for their country rather than assuming U.S. pricing applies.
Suppose a U.S. store processes a $100 domestic card order through WooPayments.
The standard processing fee would be approximately:
$100 × 2.9% + $0.30 = $3.20
The merchant would have approximately:
$96.80
remaining before product costs, shipping, advertising, taxes, refunds, and other business expenses.
WooCommerce itself does not take an additional platform percentage from that transaction.
This is an important difference between WooCommerce and platforms that combine software fees with additional platform transaction fees.
WooCommerce can be expanded through plugins and extensions.
Extensions can add features such as:
Subscriptions
Memberships
Bookings
Product bundles
Advanced shipping
Dynamic pricing
Marketing automation
B2B pricing
Checkout customization
Many extensions are free, while premium products are commonly sold as annual subscriptions.
Examples from the official WooCommerce Marketplace include:
Extension | Current Price |
|---|---|
Product Bundles | $79/year |
Conditional Shipping and Payments | $109/year |
Composite Products | $149/year |
AutomateWoo | $159/year |
WooCommerce Bookings | $249/year |
WooCommerce Subscriptions | $279/year |
These are optional rather than required WooCommerce costs.
However, extension costs can accumulate if a store requires many specialized features.
WooCommerce does not include hosting because it is primarily a self-hosted WordPress platform.
The merchant chooses a hosting provider.
Hosting affects:
Page speed
Checkout performance
Store uptime
Security
Backups
Traffic capacity
Database performance
Administrative performance
A small store may work on relatively inexpensive hosting, while a high-traffic or complex store may require substantially more powerful infrastructure.
Choosing hosting only on price can become a problem if slow performance affects the shopping or checkout experience.
One of WooCommerce's main advantages is ownership and flexibility.
Because WooCommerce is open source and self-hosted, merchants can generally control:
Store files
Database
Product data
Customer data
Hosting provider
Themes
Plugins
Custom code
Payment providers
A store can also move between compatible hosting providers.
This differs from a fully hosted commerce service where the platform itself controls most of the underlying infrastructure.
WooCommerce has a large WordPress development ecosystem.
Stores can be customized using:
Themes
Plugins
Custom PHP
WordPress hooks and filters
REST APIs
Custom integrations
This makes WooCommerce suitable for stores with unusual workflows or requirements that cannot easily fit within a closed hosted platform.
However, more customization also increases the possibility of plugin conflicts, maintenance issues, and development costs.
Select hosting appropriate for an e-commerce website rather than choosing solely based on the lowest advertised price.
Performance and reliability become more important once customers are entering checkout and payment information.
Install WordPress, then install and activate WooCommerce.
The WooCommerce setup process covers core store settings such as:
Store location
Currency
Products
Shipping
Taxes
Payments
Create product pages with:
Product title
Description
Images
Price
Inventory
Variations
Shipping information
WooCommerce supports physical, virtual, and downloadable products through its core system and extensions.
Choose a payment gateway based on:
Country availability
Transaction fees
Supported currencies
Payment methods
Payout timing
Dispute handling
WooPayments is tightly integrated with WooCommerce, but merchants are not required to use it.
Physical-product businesses need to determine:
WooCommerce and Shopify solve similar e-commerce problems but use very different models.
WooCommerce | Shopify | |
|---|---|---|
Core model | Open-source WordPress plugin | Hosted commerce platform |
Core software | Free | Paid subscription |
Hosting | Merchant chooses | Included |
Technical control | High | More restricted |
Maintenance | Merchant responsibility | Mostly handled by Shopify |
Extensions | WordPress/Woo ecosystem | Shopify App Store |
Platform transaction fee | None from WooCommerce core | Depends on plan/payment setup |
Customization | Very high | High, but within Shopify platform |
The WooCommerce plugin can be downloaded and modified without paying a software subscription.
WooCommerce does not charge a percentage of every transaction simply for using the platform.
Merchants can choose and change hosting providers based on cost and performance requirements.
WooCommerce can support many specialized e-commerce models through plugins and custom development.
Businesses already using WordPress can add commerce without moving their entire website to another platform.
Developers have access to the underlying application and can build custom functionality beyond standard store settings.
Hosting, domains, payment processing, premium plugins, security, maintenance, and development can create significant operating costs.
A store requiring subscriptions, bookings, advanced shipping, marketing automation, or other specialized features may need several paid extensions.
Annual renewal costs should be considered when calculating the real platform cost.
WordPress, WooCommerce, themes, and plugins require updates.
Updates can occasionally create compatibility problems, particularly on heavily customized stores.
Poor hosting can cause slow pages, checkout problems, downtime, or difficulty handling traffic spikes.
Because merchants control their own WordPress environment, they also carry more responsibility for:
Updates
Backups
Administrator security
Plugin selection
Malware protection
Hosting security
WooCommerce's flexibility makes extensive customization possible.
However, highly customized stores may become dependent on developers and require ongoing maintenance when WordPress, WooCommerce, or third-party extensions change.
Yes. The core WooCommerce plugin is free and open source.
Running a store still normally requires hosting and a domain, and businesses may also pay for payment processing, premium extensions, themes, or development.
WooCommerce core does not charge a transaction fee on store orders.
The payment gateway used by the merchant normally charges payment-processing fees.
No.
WooCommerce is generally installed on a self-hosted WordPress website, so merchants choose and pay for their own hosting.
WooPayments has no setup fee or monthly fee for standard online payments.
Transaction fees vary by country and payment method.
For standard U.S. card transactions, the current base fee is 2.9% + $0.30.
No.
WooCommerce supports multiple payment gateways, allowing merchants to choose providers based on availability, fees, currencies, and business requirements.
Yes.
WooCommerce states that it can support stores with thousands of products and significant order volume, but actual performance depends heavily on hosting, site architecture, extensions, database performance, and optimization.
Usually not for beginners.
WooCommerce provides more technical control but requires the merchant to manage hosting, WordPress, plugins, updates, and more of the technical environment.
Shopify handles more infrastructure for the merchant.

Shipping regions
Shipping rates
Carriers
Free-shipping thresholds

The complexity depends heavily on the countries and regions where the business operates.
Avoid installing plugins simply because they are available.
Each additional plugin can increase:
Maintenance
Security exposure
Update requirements
Compatibility risk
Page weight
Annual software costs
Add an extension when it solves a specific business requirement.
Before launch, test:
Product pages
Cart
Coupons
Shipping calculation
Taxes
Payments
Order emails
Mobile checkout
Refunds
A store that looks good but has a broken checkout cannot generate reliable revenue.
Setup complexity | Higher | Lower |
WooCommerce generally provides more infrastructure control.
Shopify generally reduces the amount of technical setup and maintenance required.
Neither model is automatically cheaper.
A simple WooCommerce store may have low software costs, while a complex store can accumulate substantial hosting, extension, development, and maintenance expenses.
Prefer an open-source platform
Have the technical ability or support needed to maintain the store
Businesses primarily seeking the simplest possible setup may prefer a fully hosted e-commerce platform.
