Mailchimp is an email marketing and marketing automation platform used to collect subscribers, send newsletters, segment audiences, automate customer journeys, and connect email campaigns with ecommerce and other business systems.
It is commonly used by small businesses, ecommerce stores, creators, and service businesses that want to manage email marketing without building their own sending infrastructure. Its main tradeoff is that pricing grows with contact count and send volume, so list hygiene and segmentation become increasingly important as the audience grows.

Mailchimp pricing depends on two main factors:
The plan you choose
The number of contacts stored in the account
The current main Marketing plans are:
Plan | Starting Price | Main Fit |
|---|---|---|
Free | $0 | Small lists and testing |
Essentials | From $13/month | Regular email campaigns |
Standard | From $20/month | Automation and more advanced segmentation |
Premium | From $350/month | Larger marketing teams and advanced use |
Actual paid pricing increases as the contact limit increases.
The current Free plan includes:
Up to 250 contacts
Up to 500 email sends per month
Maximum 250 sends per day
1 audience
1 seat
Basic templates
Basic reporting
Forms and landing pages
If the account exceeds the Free plan's contact or send limit, sending is paused until the account is reduced below the limit or upgraded.
The core Mailchimp workflow is:
Visitor joins list → Contact enters audience → Segment or automation identifies them → Email is sent → Engagement is measured → Future messaging changes
For example:
Website visitor → Newsletter signup → Welcome email → Product education → Offer → Purchase
This makes Mailchimp useful for both one-time campaigns and automated lifecycle communication.
It connects naturally with broader Email Marketing strategies.
An Audience is the main database containing your contacts.
Contact records can contain information such as:
Email address
Name
Location
Tags
Groups
Signup source
Purchase activity
Engagement history
For most small businesses, one well-organized audience is easier to manage than creating several audiences unnecessarily.
Contacts can enter Mailchimp through:
Signup forms
Landing pages
Imports
Ecommerce integrations
API integrations
Only add people you have the appropriate permission or legal basis to contact.
Do not import purchased email lists.
A simple acquisition workflow is:
Website → Signup form → Mailchimp audience → Welcome email
Possible incentives include:
Newsletter
Discount
Free guide
Product updates
Educational content
The reason for subscribing should be clear before asking for an email address.
Create:
Subject line
Sender information
An audience contains contacts and related marketing data.
Mailchimp categorizes contacts into types such as:
Subscribed
Unsubscribed
Non-subscribed
Cleaned
Pending
An important pricing detail is that certain non-subscribed and unsubscribed contacts can still count toward the account's contact limit.
Cleaned and archived contacts generally do not.
This means maintaining unnecessary contacts can increase cost even if those people no longer receive marketing emails.
These tools serve different purposes.
Tags are labels applied to contacts.
Examples:
Customer
Webinar lead
VIP
Product A buyer
Groups allow subscribers to express preferences.
For example:
Subscriber chooses:
SEO
Email Marketing
Ecommerce
The subscriber can then receive content matching those interests.
Segments dynamically filter contacts based on conditions.
Example:
Subscribed AND opened recent email AND purchased product
Segments can use data such as:
Engagement
Purchase activity
Location
Signup form → Audience → Welcome email → Weekly newsletter → Engagement segment
This works well for businesses using newsletters as a long-term acquisition and retention channel.
For a Newsletter Business, Mailchimp can manage subscribers and sending while the business focuses on content and monetization.
Store visit → Product or purchase activity synced → Customer segment → Follow-up email
An ecommerce integration can send customer and order information into Mailchimp.
This allows segmentation such as:
Customer purchased Product A
AND
Has not purchased Product B
→ Send Product B campaign
Platforms such as Shopify and WooCommerce can integrate with Mailchimp.
Lead form → Tag contact → Welcome email → Wait → Educational email → Case study → Sales CTA
This is useful for businesses where customers do not buy immediately.
For example:
Consulting inquiry → Educational sequence → Case study → Consultation booking
A structured sequence can automate repetitive follow-up while sales staff focus on qualified leads.
Mailchimp's Marketing Automation Flows allow contacts to move through automated paths based on triggers, rules, and actions.
A simple flow could be:
Signs up → Send welcome email → Wait 3 days → Send useful guide → Wait → Send offer
Possible steps include:
Send email
Add or remove tags
Time delays
Conditional splits
Percentage splits
Wait for trigger
Plan limits differ significantly.
Essentials currently supports flows with up to:
4 steps
while Standard and higher can support:
up to 200 steps
Standard also supports up to:
3 triggers
in relevant automation flows.
For more complex workflows, this makes Standard substantially more capable than Essentials.
Creating multiple audiences can duplicate the same contact across lists.
This can:
Increase contact counts
Increase cost
Fragment customer history
Use tags, groups, and segments inside one main audience when they adequately represent the structure.
Paid Mailchimp pricing is heavily affected by contact count.
Contacts that are no longer useful can create recurring costs.
Review:
Unsubscribed contacts
Long-term inactive contacts
Duplicate records
before automatically upgrading to a larger pricing tier.
Be careful not to remove records required for compliance or business history without understanding the consequences.
A small targeted campaign can outperform a large irrelevant campaign.
For example:
All subscribers
is usually less precise than:
Customers who purchased running shoes but have not purchased socks
Segmentation can improve relevance while reducing unnecessary sends.
Do not create a 40-step automation simply because the platform allows it.
A simpler workflow is easier to:
Test
Understand
Update
Troubleshoot
Begin with one clear objective.
Test:
Form → Contact created → Tag applied → Automation starts → Email arrives → Link works
Mailchimp can manage recurring campaigns such as:
Newsletters
Promotions
Announcements
Product launches
Educational emails
This supports a broader Email Marketing strategy.
Online stores can use purchase data for:
Product recommendations
Repeat purchase campaigns
Customer segmentation
Win-back campaigns
Email can reduce reliance on repeatedly paying advertising platforms to reach existing customers.
Service businesses can use automated emails to educate leads before a sales conversation.
Examples include:
Agencies
Consultants
Professional services
B2B companies
Creators can use Mailchimp to build an audience independent of social-media algorithms.
The email list can support:
Content distribution
Digital products
Sponsorships
Courses
Memberships
However, newsletter-first businesses should also compare specialized creator platforms such as Beehiiv or Substack.
Mailchimp's integration directory includes services across ecommerce, analytics, CRM, payments, design, social media, and other categories.
Popular integrations currently include:
Shopify
WooCommerce
WordPress
Canva
Zapier
Stripe
Salesforce
Wix
Squarespace
A useful ecommerce integration can automatically sync:
Store customer → Mailchimp contact
Order → Purchase data
Product activity → Segmentation
This is much more useful than manually importing customer spreadsheets.
Developers can use Mailchimp's Marketing API to integrate external applications.
Possible workflows include:
CRM → Mailchimp API → Update contact
or:
Application event → Mailchimp → Start targeted automation
Mailchimp integrations use OAuth 2 for authorized third-party access.
Custom API work becomes useful when a business has data or workflows that cannot be handled by a standard integration.
Custom events can be sent to Mailchimp and used for targeting.
For example:
User completes lesson → Event sent → Segment updated → Relevant email sent
Event-data retention available for segmentation varies by plan.
Current limits include approximately:
Free: 30 days
Essentials: 30 days
Standard: 3 months
Premium: 18 months
Advanced event-based multi-step automation requires Standard or higher.
Mailchimp may look inexpensive at the beginning, but paid pricing grows with contact count.
This makes audience hygiene financially important.
A contact not receiving marketing email does not automatically mean it has no pricing impact.
Understand Mailchimp's contact types and archive contacts when appropriate.
If a paid account exceeds its selected contact or send allowance, Mailchimp can charge additional fees instead of automatically stopping sending.
Monitor usage before a major campaign.
The current Free plan does not include standard Marketing Automation Flows.
Businesses wanting meaningful automated sequences will normally need a paid plan.
Essentials supports simpler automation.
Conditional branching and more complex multi-step journeys generally require Standard or higher.
The platform includes many marketing features.
For a business that only needs a simple newsletter, this breadth can be unnecessary.
Specialized newsletter platforms may provide a simpler workflow.
Platform | Best Fit | Main Difference |
|---|---|---|
Mailchimp | Small-business email marketing and automation | Broad marketing platform with ecommerce integrations |
Beehiiv | Newsletter businesses and creators | Newsletter growth and monetization focused |
Substack | Writers and paid subscription publications | Built-in creator network and paid subscriptions |
ConvertKit / Kit | Creator-focused email marketing | Creator automation and product focus |
Choose Mailchimp when:
Ecommerce integrations matter
Email automation is important
You want a broad marketing platform
Audience segmentation is useful
The business already uses connected commerce or CRM tools
Choose a newsletter-focused platform when publishing, audience growth, and newsletter monetization are the primary business model.
Yes.
The current Free Marketing plan supports up to 250 contacts and 500 email sends per month, with a maximum of 250 sends per day.
Current entry prices start around:
Essentials — $13/month
Standard — $20/month
Premium — $350/month
Actual pricing depends on contact count and send allowances.
They can.
Mailchimp states that subscribed, non-subscribed, and unsubscribed contacts can count toward paid contact limits.
Archived and cleaned contacts generally do not.
Yes.
Paid plans support Marketing Automation Flows, with larger and more advanced workflows available on Standard and Premium.
Yes.
Mailchimp supports integrations with Shopify, WooCommerce, and many other ecommerce and business platforms.
Yes, particularly when newsletters are part of a wider business marketing system.
Businesses built primarily around newsletter publishing and monetization may also want to compare Beehiiv and Substack.
The Free plan is useful for testing Mailchimp, but 250 contacts is a relatively small long-term allowance.
Essentials starts at:
$13/month
for the lowest contact tier.
It currently supports:
Up to 50,000 contacts
Monthly send allowance equal to 10× the selected contact limit
3 audiences
3 seats
Email scheduling
A/B testing
Single-email automations
Basic automation flows
For example, a 500-contact Essentials tier typically includes up to:
5,000 monthly sends
because:
500 contacts × 10 = 5,000 sends
Standard starts at:
$20/month
for the lowest contact tier.
Its monthly send allowance is currently:
12× the selected contact limit
Standard adds more advanced functionality such as:
Advanced segmentation
More complex automation flows
Additional AI features
Behavioral targeting
Expanded journey logic
This is generally the more relevant plan when Mailchimp becomes part of a serious automated marketing system.
Premium currently starts at approximately:
$350/month
and is aimed at larger teams and contact databases.
Its monthly send allowance is generally:
15× the selected contact limit
Premium includes higher limits and more advanced support, segmentation, reporting, and organizational functionality.
Email content
Call to action
Target audience or segment
Send a test email before sending the final campaign.
Mailchimp currently allows Free users up to:
12 test sends per email
and:
24 total test sends per 24 hours
Paid users receive higher testing limits.
After sending, review metrics such as:
Deliveries
Opens
Clicks
Unsubscribes
Conversions where available
Do not judge an email only by open rate.
The more important metric may be:
Purchase
Lead
Booking
Subscription
Website action
depending on the business.
Tags
Signup source
Free and Essentials plans currently allow up to:
10 conditions per standard segment
using one AND/OR logic structure.
Standard and Premium support advanced segmentation with nested logic and unlimited conditions.
Do not assume that each integration works merely because it is connected.
Unsubscribes are normal.
A sudden increase can indicate problems with:
Frequency
Relevance
Audience quality
Expectations
Trying to prevent every unsubscribe can produce worse email marketing than allowing uninterested contacts to leave.
Clicks are useful indicators.
Business outcomes are more important.
A better ecommerce reporting path is:
Campaign → Click → Purchase → Revenue
rather than:
Campaign → Open
