eBay is a global online marketplace where individuals and businesses can sell new, used, refurbished, collectible, and specialized products.
Unlike a standalone e-commerce platform, eBay provides an existing marketplace with buyers already searching for products. Sellers can list products using fixed-price or auction formats and pay fees when listings exceed certain allowances or when products sell.
For a business, eBay's main advantage is access to marketplace demand without having to build all traffic from scratch. The tradeoff is marketplace fees, competition, seller performance requirements, and less control over the customer relationship than with an independent online store.
Item | Details |
|---|---|
Basic account | No required monthly subscription |
Free listing allowance on eBay.com | Up to 250 zero insertion fee listings per month |
Insertion fee after allowance | Generally $0.35 per listing |
Typical final value fee | 13.6% in many categories up to $7,500 |
Per-order fee | $0.30 for orders $10 or less; $0.40 above $10 |
Listing formats | Fixed price and auction |
Store subscription | Optional |
Payments | Managed through eBay |
Advertising | Promoted Listings available |
Main business models | Reselling, retail, collectibles, used goods, parts, liquidation |
Fees vary substantially by product category, country, seller performance, Store subscription, and optional advertising.
Sellers create listings for products they want to sell.
A listing normally includes:
Product title
Category
Photos
Condition
Description
Price
Shipping method
Return policy
Products can generally be sold using either a fixed price or auction format.
When a buyer completes a purchase, eBay collects the payment, deducts applicable fees and other charges, and sends the remaining proceeds to the seller through its payout system.
The seller then ships the product and handles any customer service, returns, or disputes associated with the transaction.
eBay's two main selling fees are:
Insertion fees
Final value fees
Optional advertising, listing upgrades, international sales, currency conversion, and poor seller performance can create additional costs.
For standard eBay.com sellers, the first 250 listings per month generally receive a zero insertion fee allowance.
After that allowance is used, the standard insertion fee for many categories is:
$0.35 per listing
Insertion fees are generally charged whether or not the product sells.
They may also apply again when certain listings are renewed or relisted.
Good 'Til Cancelled fixed-price listings automatically renew once per calendar month and count toward the monthly zero insertion fee allowance.
When an item sells, eBay charges a final value fee.
For many categories on eBay.com, the current standard rate is:
13.6% of the total amount of the sale up to $7,500 per item
plus:
2.35% of the portion above $7,500
A per-order fee also applies:
Order Value | Per-Order Fee |
|---|---|
$10 or less | $0.30 |
Over $10 | $0.40 |
However, final value fees vary by category.
For example, books and some media categories have higher rates, while certain high-value or specialized categories use different structures.
Sellers should therefore calculate fees using the category in which they actually plan to sell.
An important point is that the final value fee is not necessarily calculated only on the product price.
The total amount of the sale can include:
Item price
Shipping charged to the buyer
Handling charges
Sales tax
Certain other applicable charges
This means the effective marketplace cost relative to the product's listed price can be higher than simply multiplying the item price by the headline fee percentage.
Suppose a seller sells a product for $100 with free shipping in a category using the standard 13.6% rate.
Ignoring sales tax for this simplified example:
Final value fee:
$100 × 13.6% = $13.60
Add the $0.40 per-order fee:
Total eBay fee = $14.00
The seller would have:
$86.00
remaining before:
Product cost
Shipping
Packaging
Advertising
Returns
Taxes
Other business expenses
This is why an eBay business should calculate profit after marketplace fees rather than using the difference between purchase price and selling price alone.
Frequent sellers can subscribe to an eBay Store.
Store subscriptions provide benefits such as:
More zero insertion fee listings
Lower final value fees in many categories
Store branding
Additional seller tools
Marketing features
Current eBay.com Store subscription pricing includes:
Store | Monthly Renewal | Yearly Plan Rate per Month |
|---|---|---|
Starter | $7.95 | $4.95 |
Basic | $27.95 | $21.95 |
Premium | $74.95 | $59.95 |
Anchor | $349.95 | $299.95 |
Enterprise | — | $2,999.95 |
The yearly rates require an annual subscription commitment even though eBay charges the subscription monthly.
A Store is not automatically worthwhile for every seller.
The value depends on factors such as:
Number of listings
Categories sold
eBay manages buyer payments through its own payment system.
Selling fees and other applicable costs are normally deducted before the seller receives the payout.
Sellers can receive payouts to an eligible:
Checking account
Visa debit card
Mastercard debit card
Payout activity can be monitored through the Payments section of Seller Hub.
This simplifies payment processing compared with operating a completely independent online store where the merchant separately integrates a payment processor.
eBay offers advertising through Promoted Listings.
Advertising can increase a product's visibility within eBay search results and other placements.
Two major campaign strategies are available:
With a general campaign, the seller sets an ad rate expressed as a percentage.
The seller generally pays the advertising fee when the promoted item sells within the attribution period after a buyer clicks the ad.
The advertising fee is based on the seller's selected ad rate and the total sale amount.
Priority campaigns operate using a cost-per-click model.
The seller pays for clicks on promoted listings rather than only for attributed sales.
Advertising therefore creates another cost that must be included when calculating product margins.
A product that appears profitable before advertising may become unattractive once marketplace fees, shipping, and advertising are included.
Common eBay inventory sources include:
Used personal goods
Thrift stores
Garage and estate sales
Retail clearance
Liquidation inventory
Wholesale suppliers
Collectibles
Auto and machine parts
Refurbished products
eBay can be particularly useful for products where buyers search for specific models, replacement parts, discontinued goods, or collectibles.
Do not judge demand only by active listings.
A product may have hundreds of listings but very few actual buyers.
Check completed or sold listings to understand:
Actual sale prices
Product condition
Shipping charges
Sales frequency
Competition
The important number is not what other sellers are asking.
It is what buyers are actually paying.
Estimate:
Sale price
− eBay fees
− Product cost
− Shipping
− Packaging
− Advertising
− Expected return losses
= Estimated profit
A high selling price does not necessarily mean a high-margin product.
For eBay.com, sellers are generally required to keep:
Cases closed without seller resolution: no more than 2 cases or 0.3% of transactions
and:
Transaction defect rate: no more than 2%
eBay evaluates seller performance monthly.
A Below Standard seller can face restrictions and higher final value fees.
This makes operational reliability part of the economics of an eBay business.
Poor inventory control, inaccurate descriptions, slow shipping, or frequent cancellations can increase both customer-service costs and marketplace fees.
Seller performance can directly affect fees.
For U.S. sellers rated Below Standard, eBay can apply an additional final value fee.
Accounts remaining Below Standard for extended periods can face even higher additional fees.
Very high rates of "Item not as described" returns compared with similar sellers can also trigger additional final value fees.
For a serious eBay business, maintaining seller metrics should therefore be treated as a financial requirement rather than only a customer-service goal.
eBay can provide access to buyers in multiple countries.
International selling can expand the addressable market for products such as:
Collectibles
Replacement parts
Rare products
Specialized equipment
Discontinued items
However, international sales may introduce:
Additional marketplace fees
Currency conversion
Longer shipping times
Customs
Import duties
Returns complexity
For U.S.-registered sellers not using eligible eBay International Shipping transactions, an international fee can apply when the buyer or delivery address is outside the United States.
Country-specific fee structures differ, so sellers outside the U.S. should use their regional eBay fee schedule rather than applying eBay.com U.S. rates.
The fundamental difference is traffic versus control.
eBay | Independent Store | |
|---|---|---|
Existing marketplace traffic | Yes | Usually must be acquired |
Marketplace selling fee | Yes | Usually no marketplace fee |
Customer relationship | More limited | Greater control |
Setup difficulty | Low | Higher |
Competition on same platform | High | Less direct |
Branding control | Limited | High |
Payment infrastructure | Included | Merchant configures |
Platform dependence | High | Lower |
eBay can be easier for generating early sales because buyers already use the marketplace.
Sellers can reach buyers without first building a large website audience.
eBay is particularly useful for goods that do not fit neatly into conventional retail catalogs.
A seller can begin without paying for an eBay Store subscription.
Sellers can choose between different selling formats depending on the product.
Specialized inventory can reach buyers outside the seller's local market.
Final value fees can consume more than 10% of the transaction before shipping, inventory cost, or advertising is considered.
Low-margin products can therefore be difficult to sell profitably.
Buyers can quickly compare:
Price
Shipping
Condition
Seller ratings
Delivery estimates
This can create strong price competition for commodity products.
Cancellations, late shipments, unresolved disputes, and inaccurate descriptions can hurt account performance.
Poor performance can lead to additional fees or selling restrictions.
A return can create:
Outbound shipping costs
Return shipping costs
Damaged inventory
Labor
Lost selling time
Products with high return rates require larger margins.
Promoted Listings can improve visibility, but advertising costs come on top of marketplace fees.
Calculate profitability after advertising rather than treating it as a separate expense later.
An eBay seller depends on eBay's:
Policies
Fees
Search system
Account status
Marketplace demand
A business operating exclusively through eBay has less control than one with its own customer acquisition channels and website.
You can start selling without an eBay Store subscription, and standard eBay.com sellers currently receive up to 250 zero insertion fee listings each month.
Final value fees normally apply when an item sells.
The percentage depends on the product category.
For many eBay.com categories, the standard final value fee is currently 13.6% on the total amount of the sale up to $7,500 per item, plus a per-order fee.
Different categories can have substantially different rates.
For standard eBay-managed transactions, eBay's final value fee structure incorporates payment processing rather than requiring sellers to pay a separate third-party processor for the transaction.
No.
An eBay Store is optional.
It becomes more relevant when higher listing volume and reduced selling fees justify the subscription cost.
eBay can be particularly useful for reselling because buyers actively search for used, collectible, discontinued, refurbished, and specialized products.
Profitability depends on sourcing inventory below its realistic resale value after all fees and fulfillment costs.
Yes.
International selling is possible, but fees, shipping, customs, currency conversion, and seller requirements can differ depending on the seller and buyer locations.
Yes.
Sellers who fall below eBay's performance standards can face additional final value fees and other limitations.
The main advantage is access to an existing marketplace of buyers.
A seller does not need to create all customer demand independently before making the first sale.
The business gives up part of every transaction through marketplace fees and remains dependent on eBay's marketplace, policies, seller metrics, and search system.

Sales volume
Difference in final value fees
Need for Store features
Small sellers can start without one and compare the subscription cost with the fee savings once volume increases.
Use clear titles and complete product details.
For used products, disclose defects and condition accurately.
Good photos are particularly important for:
Used products
Collectibles
Electronics
Clothing
Luxury goods
Misrepresenting condition can increase returns and damage seller performance.
Track:
Handling time
Shipping cost
Tracking
Packaging quality
Delivery performance
Shipping mistakes can directly affect customer satisfaction and seller metrics.
eBay evaluates sellers regularly.
Seller levels include:
Top Rated
Above Standard
Below Standard
Important metrics include:
Transaction defect rate
Cases closed without seller resolution
Late shipment rate
Item not received reports
Item not as described returns
Performance is not only a reputation issue.
Poor performance can create account restrictions and additional selling fees.
An independent store provides greater control but normally requires the business to generate its own traffic through advertising, SEO, social media, email, or other channels.
Many established sellers use both instead of treating them as mutually exclusive.
