Ahrefs is an SEO and search-marketing platform used for competitor research, backlink analysis, keyword research, rank tracking, technical site audits, and increasingly AI-search visibility analysis.
Its strongest use case is researching search markets that you do not control. While Google Search Console shows first-party Google Search data for your own site, Ahrefs can estimate competitors' rankings, traffic, backlinks, top pages, and keyword opportunities across a much broader search dataset.

There is currently no free trial.
Instead, Ahrefs provides a free account with limited access, particularly for websites where ownership can be verified.
Starter is the cheapest paid plan.
It currently includes access to tools such as:
Site Explorer
Keywords Explorer
Site Audit
Rank Tracker
SEO Dashboard
Ahrefs combines several important SEO workflows.
For example:
Competitor → Top pages → Ranking keywords → Content opportunity → Create page → Track ranking
or:
Competitor → Backlinks → Identify referring sites → Find link opportunity → Outreach
or:
Website → Site Audit → Find technical problem → Fix → Recrawl
This makes Ahrefs useful throughout the research and monitoring side of SEO.
Add your website as a project and verify ownership.
Verified projects receive useful access even through Ahrefs Free and generally have fewer project limitations than unverified competitor domains.
Verification can also make Ahrefs much more useful before paying for a full plan.
Crawl the site and review:
Errors
Warnings
Notices
Site Audit currently checks for more than:
170 technical and on-page SEO issues
Potential areas include:
Indexability
Redirects
Titles
Meta descriptions
H1 tags
Internal links
Duplicate content
Sitemaps
Robots.txt
Structured data
Performance
Fix important problems first rather than blindly trying to maximize the Health Score.
Track terms that directly matter to the site's strategy.
Examples:
Main commercial keywords
Important content topics
Pages close to page one
Strategic category terms
Do not spend keyword tracking limits on hundreds of nearly identical variations.
Enter a competitor into Site Explorer.
Site Explorer is Ahrefs' main competitor-analysis tool.
Enter:
Domain
Subdomain
Subfolder
Exact URL
and Ahrefs can provide estimates and data related to:
Organic search traffic
Organic keywords
Top pages
Backlinks
Referring domains
Paid traffic
AI-search visibility
Ahrefs currently reports an index containing approximately:
21.5 billion pages
and:
35 trillion live backlinks
This scale is especially useful for backlink and competitor research.
Keywords Explorer is Ahrefs' keyword research system.
Its current database includes approximately:
28.7 billion filtered keywords
from more than:
110 billion discovered keywords
Important metrics include:
Search volume
Keyword Difficulty
Traffic Potential
Parent Topic
Search volume estimates how frequently a keyword is searched.
Do not assume that ranking #1 means receiving the full search volume.
Actual traffic depends on:
Competitor → Site Explorer → Top pages → Identify high-traffic relevant page → Inspect its keywords → Compare your coverage
This can reveal content opportunities without brainstorming from scratch.
For example:
Competitor article → Estimated 20,000 organic visits
→ Ranks for 300 related terms
→ Topic relevant to your audience
Before creating your own version, inspect the actual search results and determine why users prefer those ranking pages.
Your site + Competitors → Content Gap → Missing keywords → Filter relevance → Inspect SERP → Prioritize
This is useful when several competitors independently rank for the same topic.
Repeated competitor coverage can indicate a meaningful gap.
Do not automatically publish everything returned by Content Gap.
Some keywords may be:
Irrelevant
Too broad
Duplicative
Better handled by existing content
Competitor page → Backlinks → Referring domains → Identify relevant link sources → Evaluate context → Outreach
Suppose multiple industry sites link to a competitor's data study.
That may suggest the topic naturally earns links.
The goal is not:
"Copy every competitor backlink."
Instead ask:
Why did this page earn links, and can we create something worth citing?
Search volume describes one keyword.
Traffic Potential provides an estimate based on the traffic of the top-ranking page.
A page can rank for hundreds or thousands of related queries.
For content planning, Traffic Potential can therefore be more informative than one keyword's volume alone.
Before creating separate articles for similar keywords, compare their Parent Topics and SERPs.
If the same pages rank for both queries, Google may treat them as the same underlying intent.
One stronger page can be better than several overlapping pages.
Domain Rating and total traffic estimates are useful context, but individual pages compete in search results.
A smaller website can sometimes rank with a strong individual page even when competitors have stronger domains.
Research:
Competitor page → Keywords → Backlinks → Intent
rather than only comparing overall DR.
Domain Rating, or DR, is an Ahrefs metric describing backlink-profile strength on a relative scale.
Google does not use Ahrefs DR directly.
Use it for comparative research, not as a target that must be increased for its own sake.
Ahrefs can reveal potential keywords.
Google Search Console can then show whether Google is already displaying your own pages for similar searches.
A useful workflow is:
Ahrefs → Discover topic
Search Console → Check existing impressions
Existing page → Improve if appropriate
New page → Create only when intent differs
A competitor may have 10,000 backlinks but only a much smaller number of meaningful referring domains.
Look at:
Referring domain relevance
Content businesses can use Ahrefs to determine:
What people search for
What competitors rank for
Which pages attract search traffic
How difficult markets appear
Where content gaps exist
This can support Blogging, affiliate sites, ecommerce content, and other organic acquisition strategies.
An SEO consultant can use Ahrefs for:
Site audits
Keyword research
Competitor research
Backlink analysis
Ranking reports
Content planning
This supports businesses such as SEO Consulting.
The software provides data.
The consultant still needs to determine:
What matters
What should be fixed
What should be ignored
What work is financially worthwhile
Ahrefs' backlink index is particularly useful for:
Competitor backlink analysis
Broken link research
Link prospecting
Identifying highly linked content
These workflows can support digital PR and content-driven link acquisition.
Verified projects can complement first-party Search Console data.
Use Ahrefs for:
Competitor research
Backlinks
Keyword expansion
and Search Console for:
Actual impressions
Actual Google clicks
Queries already triggering your site
Ahrefs currently provides API access through:
Direct API
MCP Server
Ahrefs Connect
API v3 is available on:
Lite and higher plans
Current included monthly API Integration units are approximately:
Plan | API Integration Units |
|---|---|
Lite | 100,000 |
Standard | 400,000 |
Advanced | 1,000,000 |
Enterprise | 2,000,000 |
This can support:
Ahrefs → Internal database → Analysis → Dashboard or automated report
Most individual site owners do not need API access.
Ahrefs Rank Tracker monitors selected keywords across:
190+ locations
and supports desktop and mobile tracking.
It can also monitor SERP features such as:
AI Overviews
Featured snippets
Local packs
Images
Videos
Current Lite plans allow approximately:
750 tracked keywords
while higher plans increase this limit.
One important limitation is update frequency.
The current standard pricing table lists standard Rank Tracker updates as:
Weekly
rather than daily.
Businesses requiring much more frequent rank monitoring should verify whether available add-ons or another rank-tracking tool better fits the workflow.
Higher plans provide longer historical data.
This can help investigate questions such as:
When did a competitor begin growing?
Which pages gained traffic?
Which keywords were lost?
How did a site change after a migration?
Historical analysis becomes more valuable for established markets than for completely new sites.
Ahrefs does not have access to competitors' private Analytics or Search Console accounts.
Metrics such as:
Organic traffic
Traffic value
Keyword volume
are estimates created from Ahrefs' datasets and models.
Use them for research and comparison rather than treating them as audited numbers.
Starter is inexpensive at $29/month, but it has limited credits and capacity.
Regular professional use often pushes users toward Lite or Standard at:
$129–$249/month
or higher.
For a very small website, this cost may not be justified immediately.
Ahrefs currently does not offer a normal free trial.
Use the free account or Starter plan to evaluate the workflow before committing to a higher subscription.
Increasing Domain Rating does not itself generate revenue.
The business objective is usually:
Relevant rankings → Useful traffic → Business outcome
not:
Higher DR
Keyword databases estimate search volume.
Use actual Search Console data once your pages begin receiving impressions.
Ahrefs can expose huge amounts of competitor and keyword information.
Do not turn research into the product.
A useful cycle is:
Research → Select opportunity → Create or improve → Measure → Repeat
Tool | Best Fit | Main Difference |
|---|---|---|
Ahrefs | SEO, backlink, and competitor research | Particularly strong backlink and page-level research workflows |
Semrush | Broader SEO and digital marketing workflows | Wider integrated marketing toolkit |
Google Search Console | Your site's actual Google Search performance | Free first-party Google data |
Google Analytics | On-site behavior | Measures users after they reach the website |
Choose Ahrefs when:
Backlink analysis matters
Competitor pages are an important research source
You need deep keyword research
Content Gap research is useful
You want an integrated SEO research platform
Choose Semrush when its broader marketing toolkit, project workflow, or specific datasets better fit the business.
Use Google Search Console regardless of which paid SEO tool you choose because it provides first-party Google Search data for your own site.
Ahrefs provides a limited free account, especially for websites where you can verify ownership.
Full competitor research and larger usage limits require a paid plan.
Current monthly prices start at:
Starter — $29
Lite — $129
Standard — $249
Advanced — $449
Enterprise — $1,490
Annual billing is available for most plans.
No.
Ahrefs currently states that it does not provide a normal free trial.
Users can instead try the free account or Starter plan.
Neither is universally better.
Ahrefs is particularly strong for backlink, page, keyword, and competitor research.
Semrush provides a broader integrated SEO and digital-marketing toolkit.
The best choice depends on the workflows and data the business uses most often.
Ahrefs traffic figures are estimates based on its keyword and ranking databases.
They are useful for competitor research but should not replace first-party Analytics or Search Console data for your own website.
Domain Rating is Ahrefs' proprietary metric for comparing the strength of website backlink profiles.
It is not a Google ranking metric.
Ahrefs SEO Toolbar
Current Starter pricing is:
$29/month
It uses a monthly credit system and is intended primarily for users who need more than the free account but do not yet need the much larger limits of Lite.
Lite currently costs:
$129/month
It includes substantially larger limits and additional functionality.
Current limits include approximately:
5 unverified projects
Unlimited verified projects
750 tracked keywords
6 months of historical data
Site Audit crawl allowance
API and MCP access
Lite is more realistic than Starter for someone using Ahrefs regularly rather than occasionally.
Standard currently costs:
$249/month
and adds substantially more research capacity and advanced functionality.
Advanced currently costs:
$449/month
while Enterprise starts at:
$1,490/month
Higher plans mainly become useful when businesses need:
More projects
More tracked keywords
Larger exports
More historical data
Larger audits
More API capacity
Larger team access
Do not upgrade purely because a higher tier contains more data.
Upgrade when the limits of the current plan interfere with actual work.
Start with:
Top pages
Organic keywords
Backlinks
Competing domains
This reveals what is already working in the market.
Use Keywords Explorer to investigate topics before creating new pages.
Compare:
Search volume
Keyword Difficulty
Traffic Potential
Parent Topic
Search intent
Actual SERP
Then decide whether a keyword requires:
A new page
An update to an existing page
No action
SERP features
Search intent
Click behavior
Ranking position
Traffic Potential looks at the estimated traffic received by the top-ranking page rather than only the volume of one keyword.
This can be more useful because one page often ranks for many related searches.
Parent Topic helps determine whether several keywords can reasonably be targeted by the same page.
For example:
Keyword A
Keyword B
Keyword C
may appear different but share the same dominant ranking pages.
Instead of producing three thin articles, one strong page may satisfy all three.
Linking page
Anchor context
Traffic
Link placement
Raw backlink count alone can be misleading.
Site Audit identifies more than 170 issue types.
Not all detected issues are equally important.
Prioritize:
Indexing and crawling → Broken critical links → Important on-page problems → Performance → Minor cleanup
Technical SEO work should improve the actual website, not merely the tool's score.
Before building a content-heavy business, founders can investigate:
Market → Competitors → Top pages → Keywords → Search demand
This can help determine whether an industry has meaningful organic search demand.
It does not prove that the business itself will be profitable.
