Google Search Console is a free Google service for understanding how a website appears in Google Search.
It is particularly useful for answering two different questions:
Can Google crawl and index the site?
and:
What search queries and pages are actually generating impressions and clicks?
It should normally be one of the first tools connected to a new Website when organic search matters.
Google Search Console is free.
There is no paid Search Console plan required to access its standard reports and tools.
This includes:
Search performance reporting
Page indexing reports
URL Inspection
Sitemap submission
Core Web Vitals
Links reports
Manual action reports
Security issue reports
Search Console itself does not charge based on:
Website traffic
Number of indexed pages
Search impressions
Clicks
The main costs are indirect, such as developer work or SEO work required to fix problems identified by Search Console.
Search Console sits between your website and Google's search systems.
A simple workflow looks like:
Website → Google crawls pages → Google indexes eligible pages → Pages appear in Search → Search Console reports impressions and clicks
Search Console can help identify problems at several stages.
For example:
Page published → Not indexed → Inspect URL → Find crawl/indexing issue → Fix page → Request indexing
Or:
Page indexed → Receives many impressions → Low CTR → Improve title and search snippet → Compare later performance
This makes Search Console useful for both technical SEO and content decisions.
A Search Console property represents the website you want to monitor.
The two main property types are:
Domain property
URL-prefix property
A Domain property covers all protocols and subdomains for a domain.
For example:
example.com
can cover variations such as:
https://example.com
http://example.com
https://www.example.com
A URL-prefix property covers only URLs matching the specified prefix.
For most businesses that control the domain, a Domain property is usually the cleaner long-term setup.
Google requires proof that you control the site.
Verification methods can include:
DNS record
HTML file
HTML tag
Google Analytics
Google Tag Manager
Domain properties require DNS verification.
Do not remove the verification method after setup unless another valid method remains in place.
If the site provides a sitemap, submit it through the Sitemaps report.
A common sitemap URL is:
https://example.com/sitemap.xml
Submitting a sitemap does not guarantee indexing.
It helps Google discover URLs and allows the site owner to monitor whether Google can successfully read the submitted sitemap.
Use URL Inspection for important URLs such as:
Homepage
New articles
The Performance report is one of the most important Search Console tools.
Main metrics include:
Clicks
Impressions
CTR
Average position
Clicks measure how often a user clicked a Google Search result leading to the site.
An impression generally means a link to the site appeared in Google Search according to Google's reporting rules.
A page can therefore generate impressions without receiving clicks.
CTR is:
Clicks ÷ Impressions × 100
For example:
1,000 impressions
50 clicks
CTR:
5%
CTR should not be interpreted without considering query intent and search position.
Average position represents the average topmost position of the site's search result across reported impressions.
It should be treated as a diagnostic metric rather than a perfectly fixed ranking.
Rankings vary based on:
Query
Device
Location
Search context
Search-result format
Performance → Pages → Identify high-impression pages → Review Queries → Improve title/content alignment → Compare later period
This is one of the most practical workflows for a growing content site.
Suppose a page has:
5,000 impressions
25 clicks
0.5% CTR
Before rewriting the entire article, inspect:
Queries generating impressions
Average positions
Search intent
Page title
Search-result competition
If the page is ranking around position 40, low CTR is expected.
If it is ranking near the top but receiving very few clicks, the title, relevance, or search-result format may deserve more attention.
This distinction prevents unnecessary rewriting.
Publish page → URL Inspection → Check Google index status → Test live URL → Fix issue if necessary → Request indexing
URL Inspection can show information such as:
Whether Google knows the URL
Indexing status
Canonical URL
Last crawl
Crawl permission
Page fetch information
The Live Test examines the current version of the page.
This is useful when the indexed information reflects an older version.
Performance → Queries → Sort by impressions → Find relevant queries → Match queries to existing pages → Improve useful sections
For an SEO content strategy, this is often more useful than relying entirely on third-party keyword estimates.
These are different issues.
Not indexed
means the page generally cannot generate normal Google Search traffic.
Indexed but ranking poorly
means Google knows the page, but other factors affect its visibility.
Do not repeatedly request indexing for a page that is already indexed but ranks poorly.
Indexing requests are not a ranking tool.
The Page Indexing report is useful for site-wide trends.
URL Inspection is better when troubleshooting one specific page.
For example:
Page Indexing → Notice excluded URLs → URL Inspection → Investigate individual important URL
Do not try to manually inspect every URL on a large site.
Prioritize commercially or editorially important pages.
Google recommends URL Inspection for requesting a crawl of a single page.
For many URLs, use a sitemap.
A practical workflow is:
Publish pages → Sitemap updates → Google discovers sitemap URLs → Monitor indexing
There is usually no reason to manually submit every ordinary page one by one.
Not every non-indexed URL represents a problem.
Examples can include:
Redirects
Duplicate pages
Alternate canonical URLs
Intentionally excluded pages
Focus on URLs that should appear in Google but do not.
A single number gives little context.
Instead of looking only at:
10,000 impressions
compare:
Previous 28 days → 7,000 impressions
Current 28 days → 10,000 impressions
Search Console can reveal which existing pages Google is already showing for relevant searches.
For example:
Article → High impressions → Position 12–20 → Relevant query → Improve article
This can be a more efficient opportunity than creating an unrelated new page.
It is particularly useful for growing content sites and Blogging businesses.
After publishing new pages:
Confirm they are crawlable.
Make sure they appear in the sitemap.
Inspect important URLs.
Watch for indexing.
Monitor initial impressions.
Review queries as data accumulates.
Early impressions can reveal how Google initially interprets the page.
A decline in organic traffic can have many causes.
A useful workflow is:
Performance → Compare periods → Identify affected pages/queries → Check indexing → Check manual actions/security → Investigate site changes
Do not assume every traffic decline is caused by a Google algorithm update.
Possible causes include:
Page removal
noindex
Canonical errors
Site migration problems
Seasonal demand
Ranking changes
Competitor changes
New websites often receive impressions before meaningful clicks.
That progression can look like:
Search Console and Google Analytics measure different parts of the journey.
Search Console:
Search query → Search impression → Search click
Google Analytics:
Website visit → Behavior → Key event or purchase
Together:
Search query → Click → Landing page → User behavior → Business outcome
Search Console can be linked with Google Analytics to make organic-search information available alongside Analytics reporting.
Search Console data can also be used in reporting dashboards, including Looker Studio.
This can be useful for combining:
Search Console
Google Analytics
Advertising data
Business metrics
Most small sites do not need a complex dashboard immediately.
The native Search Console Performance report is often enough for basic SEO decisions.
Google provides a Search Console API for programmatic access to Search Console data and functionality.
It can be useful for:
Automated SEO reporting
Large-site analysis
Custom dashboards
Data pipelines
Agency reporting
For example:
Search Console API → Data warehouse → Dashboard → Weekly SEO report
Small sites normally do not need API access.
Large sites that require more complete Search Console performance datasets can use bulk data export to BigQuery.
This is particularly useful because standard Search Console tables do not expose every available row.
Typical users include:
Large publishers
Major ecommerce sites
SEO agencies
Enterprise websites
For ordinary sites, manual exports and the standard interface are usually sufficient.
Submitting a sitemap or requesting indexing does not force Google to index a page.
Google still evaluates whether and when a page should be crawled and indexed.
Search Console primarily explains performance before and during the Google Search click.
It does not provide the full behavioral analysis of what visitors do after reaching the website.
Use Analytics for on-site behavior.
Some queries are anonymized and omitted from tables.
Large datasets can also be truncated.
Search Console should therefore not be treated as a complete log of every Google search involving the site.
Adding a site to Search Console does not immediately produce rankings or traffic.
Google states that Search Console is not required for inclusion in Search results.
The tool helps monitor Google's understanding of the site; it does not create search demand or authority by itself.
Requesting indexing can ask Google to recrawl a page.
It does not tell Google to rank the page higher.
Repeatedly requesting indexing for unchanged pages is not an SEO strategy.
The Core Web Vitals report uses real-world Chrome user data.
Sites or URL groups without enough usage data may not appear.
No data does not necessarily mean the page is technically perfect or broken.
Google Search Console does not have a direct replacement for Google-specific search data because the information comes directly from Google.
However, other tools complement it.
Tool | Best Fit | Main Difference |
|---|---|---|
Google Search Console | Google indexing and organic Search performance | First-party Google Search data |
Bing Webmaster Tools | Bing search monitoring | First-party Bing data |
Google Analytics | Website behavior after users arrive | On-site analytics |
Ahrefs | Keyword, backlink, and competitor research | Third-party SEO database |
Semrush | SEO and marketing research | Competitive and keyword research |
Use Search Console when you need to understand:
Google indexing
Search queries
Organic impressions
Clicks
Google Search positions
Search-related technical issues
Use third-party SEO tools when you need:
Yes.
Google Search Console is a free service.
No.
Google states that a site does not need to register with Search Console to be included in Google Search.
Search Console provides tools for monitoring and troubleshooting how Google sees the site.
No.
A sitemap helps Google discover URLs and lets you monitor sitemap processing, but it does not guarantee that every submitted URL will be indexed.
Inspect the full page URL using URL Inspection and select Request indexing.
For multiple pages, use a sitemap rather than manually requesting each URL.
A page can appear in Google Search without being clicked.
Common reasons include:
Low ranking position
Search intent mismatch
Weak title or snippet
Highly competitive search results
Check the page's queries and positions before concluding that something is wrong.
Google states that data for a newly added website can take up to approximately a week to begin appearing.
Very new sites may also have little data because they have not yet generated meaningful search visibility.
Product pages
Important landing pages
Check whether Google reports the page as indexed and whether the canonical URL is what you expect.
A new Search Console property may not immediately contain useful Performance data.
Google states that newly added websites can take up to approximately a week before data begins appearing.
A completely new site may also have little or no Performance data simply because it has not yet generated meaningful search impressions or clicks.
Search Console shows queries for which Google is already testing or displaying your site.
A page appearing for unexpected but relevant queries may indicate an opportunity to improve coverage within the existing page.
Then inspect which:
Pages
Queries
Countries
Devices
caused the difference.
Performance changes become much easier to understand this way.
A page's aggregate average position can hide very different query behavior.
For example:
Query A → Position 6
Query B → Position 18
Query C → Position 70
Analyzing only the page average can be misleading.
Filter by page and then inspect its queries.
Search Console reports aggregated search-performance data.
It is not designed to tell you that one keyword permanently ranks at an exact position for every searcher.
Use average position to identify trends and opportunities rather than obsessing over small daily movements.
Not every query is shown.
Google omits some anonymized queries for privacy, and table data can be truncated.
Chart totals can therefore differ from the visible query rows.
Do not assume summing every visible query will always equal the property's total performance.
Indexed → First impressions → Higher impression volume → Better positions → Clicks
For an early-stage site, growing impressions and improving positions can therefore provide useful signals before traffic becomes meaningful.
Competitor research
Broader keyword databases
Backlink research
Rank tracking beyond your own Search Console data
In practice, Search Console and third-party SEO tools usually complement each other rather than replace each other.
