Blogging is the practice of publishing written content on a website or publishing platform. A blog can operate as a standalone income-producing business or as a marketing channel that attracts customers to another business.
Item | Details |
|---|---|
Cheapest way to start | Free publishing platforms are available |
Own domain required | No, but commonly used for an independent business site |
Common revenue models | Advertising, affiliate commissions, subscriptions, sponsorships, products, services |
Inventory required | No |
Main traffic sources | Search engines, social platforms, email, referrals, direct traffic |
Common business use | Attract visitors, generate leads, build an email audience, support product or service sales |
Search traffic guaranteed | No |
Main recurring costs | Domain, hosting/platform plan, email tools, software, contractors, advertising |
A blog does not need to make money directly to have economic value. A software company, online store, freelancer, agency, or local business can use blog content to attract potential customers through search and other distribution channels.
Blogging does not have one standard revenue rate because different blogs monetize different actions: pageviews, purchases, subscriptions, leads, product sales, or client contracts.
The most useful distinction is between directly monetized blogs and blogs used to market another business.
A standalone publishing business can combine several revenue sources.
Advertising networks place ads in or around articles and pay the publisher based primarily on ad impressions and advertiser demand.
Google AdSense for Content currently gives publishers 80% of revenue after the advertiser platform takes its fee. When an advertiser buys through Google Ads, Google states that the publisher keeps approximately 68% of the advertiser-side revenue. AdSense now pays publishers using an impression-based model.
This percentage does not tell a blogger how much a particular site will earn. Actual revenue per thousand sessions or pageviews can differ substantially by visitor country, niche, season, device, ad placement, and advertiser demand.
Larger independent ad-management networks usually require an existing audience or revenue history. As of August 2026, Journey by Mediavine starts at 1,000 premium sessions per month, while Mediavine Official requires at least US$5,000 in annual ad revenue.
These thresholds are useful because a new blog may be able to install basic advertising earlier than it can access higher-tier publisher programs.
With Affiliate Marketing, the publisher links readers to another company's product or service and receives a commission when a qualifying action occurs.
Commission economics vary widely by program and product.
For example, Amazon's U.S. Associates program currently lists category rates ranging from low single-digit percentages for many physical products to higher rates for selected categories. Examples include 4.5% for physical books and kitchen products, 3% for home, beauty, tools, sports, and several other categories, and 10% for Luxury Beauty.
A blog receiving 100,000 visits is therefore not automatically more profitable than one receiving 20,000. Commercial intent, product price, conversion rate, and commission structure can matter as much as raw traffic.
Readers can pay directly for access to premium articles, newsletters, communities, or archives.
Substack allows free publishing without a monthly publishing charge. When a creator enables paid subscriptions, Substack takes , while Stripe payment-processing and recurring-billing fees also apply.
Reliable data describing the income distribution of all bloggers globally is limited, so individual success stories should not be treated as typical outcomes.
Mediavine reports that Old World Garden Farms grew into a multi-site publishing business earning more than US$500,000 per year in advertising revenue. This is a high-performing publisher case study, not an estimate of normal blogger income.
Another Mediavine publisher interview reported that Practical Wanderlust grew to multi-six-figure revenue in less than three years, with about 80% of its revenue at the time coming from affiliate marketing and advertising. Again, this is an individual successful business rather than a market average.
These cases demonstrate the upper-end economics that publishing businesses can reach but provide little information about the probability that a new blog will achieve the same result.
A blog can also exist primarily to grow another business instead of generating publishing revenue directly.
Examples include:
a SaaS company publishing problem-solving articles that lead readers to its software;
an e-commerce store publishing buying guides that lead to product pages;
a freelancer publishing tutorials that generate client inquiries;
an agency publishing industry guides that generate leads;
a local business publishing pages answering customer questions;
an online business using articles to collect email subscribers.
In these cases, advertising RPM or affiliate revenue may be irrelevant.
The useful economic chain is closer to:
Content → Visitors → Leads or product visits → Customers → Revenue
A blog used this way should be measured using business outcomes such as qualified leads, registrations, purchases, booked calls, customer acquisition, or assisted conversions rather than simply pageviews.
Google describes SEO as the process of helping search engines understand content and helping users find a site through search. Google also explicitly notes that there is no guarantee a site will be indexed or rank for a particular search.
There are two meaningfully different minimum setups.
A person can publish without purchasing a domain or hosting.
Requirement | Minimum option | Cost | Priority | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Computer or phone | Existing device | $0 additional | Essential | Used to create and manage posts |
Publishing platform | WordPress.com free plan | Free | Essential | Hosting included |
Alternative platform | Substack | Free | Essential | Particularly suitable for blog + newsletter publishing |
Domain | Platform subdomain | $0 additional | Optional | Custom domain not required to begin |
Analytics | Platform statistics |
Before choosing software, determine whether the blog is primarily intended to:
earn advertising revenue;
earn affiliate commissions;
sell subscriptions;
sell products;
attract clients;
generate leads for another business;
support an existing brand;
combine several of these models.
This affects the platform, content, traffic strategy, and metrics that matter.
A content-heavy advertising site and a consulting company's lead-generation blog may look similar to readers but have completely different economics.
Common routes include:
WordPress.com
Hosted WordPress service with a free entry option and paid plans that can use custom domains, plugins, analytics, and additional publishing features.
Self-hosted WordPress
More infrastructure responsibility but greater control over the hosting environment, plugins, themes, advertising, and site configuration.
Ghost
A managed or self-hostable publishing system oriented toward blogs, newsletters, memberships, and paid subscriptions.
Substack
A publishing and newsletter platform that is free for free publications and monetizes paid subscriptions by taking 10% of transactions.
A standalone blogging business does not need to use all of these services.
A custom domain is not required to test blogging.
For a long-term independent brand or business, it provides an address controlled independently from the publication's platform-branded subdomain.
Domains can be purchased through domain registrars or, in some cases, directly through the hosting or publishing provider.
Model | What produces revenue | Major dependency |
|---|---|---|
Display ads | Ad impressions | Traffic volume and advertiser demand |
Affiliate marketing | Qualifying purchase or action | Commercial intent and conversion |
Paid subscriptions | Recurring reader payments | Loyal audience |
Sponsorships | Brand payment | Audience value and brand fit |
Digital products | Product purchase | Conversion and product economics |
Services | Client purchase | Lead quality and service pricing |
E-commerce | Product purchase | Product margins and conversion |
Lead generation | Qualified lead | Lead value and buyer demand |
Many mature blogs combine multiple models rather than relying on one.
Blogging can have an unusually low minimum cash cost, but operating expenses can increase significantly as the publication grows.
A custom domain normally has an annual renewal cost.
As one current provider example, WordPress.com lists .com registration at US$13 per year. Prices differ between registrars and extensions.
This can range from Free to substantial monthly infrastructure costs.
Examples include:
WordPress.com: Free plan available;
WordPress.com Personal: US$4/mo when billed annually;
Ghost(Pro) Starter: US$18/mo billed annually;
Ghost(Pro) Publisher: US$29/mo billed annually.
A self-hosted site instead pays its hosting provider.
Paid subscriptions and product sales can introduce transaction costs.
Substack currently takes 10% of paid subscription transactions, in addition to applicable Stripe charges.
Ghost states that it takes 0% additional transaction fee on paid subscriptions, while payment-processor fees remain.
Cash costs may include:
writers;
editors;
photographers;
designers;
researchers;
video production;
specialist contributors.
A solo operator can initially perform these tasks without an additional cash payment, but this substitutes the founder's time for paid labor.
Optional recurring costs can include:
SEO software;
Tool | Price | Main use | Needed at start? |
|---|---|---|---|
WordPress.com | Free plan available | Hosted blog/site | Optional choice |
Substack | Free for free publishing | Blog + newsletter | Optional choice |
Ghost(Pro) | From US$18/mo annually | Independent publication | Optional choice |
Google Analytics | Free standard access | Audience and conversion measurement | Recommended |
Google Search Console | Free | Search performance and indexing | Recommended for search-focused sites |
A new blogger does not need subscriptions to numerous SEO, design, AI, analytics, and marketing tools.
Start with the services required to publish and measure the site. Add paid software when it solves a demonstrated operating problem.
Publishing a blog is not itself a universally licensed occupation.
However, the activity conducted through the blog can create country-specific obligations involving business registration, taxes, privacy, advertising, consumer protection, or professional regulation.
These should be evaluated according to the publisher's location, audience, and business model.
Commercial relationships may need to be disclosed.
In the United States, the Federal Trade Commission states that a material connection between an endorser and a brand should be clearly disclosed. A financial connection includes payments as well as free or discounted products or other benefits.
Other countries have their own advertising and consumer-protection rules.
Being able to create a website does not mean every advertising network will accept it.
For example, Mediavine evaluates factors including original audience-first content, traffic quality, advertiser safety, reader experience, and good standing with Google AdSense/Ad Exchange. Mediavine Official also currently requires at least US$5,000 in previous annual ad revenue.
Affiliate programs, ad networks, newsletter platforms, payment processors, and marketplaces maintain their own eligibility and content rules.
A blog dependent on one of these services should treat compliance with those terms as an operating requirement.
A technically correct website does not automatically receive readers.
Google states that following its Search Essentials does not guarantee that a page will be crawled, indexed, or served in search results.
A blog built primarily around search traffic therefore carries acquisition risk even when its content is published correctly.
Google says changes to a site can take anywhere from a few hours to several months to be reflected in Search and generally recommends waiting at least a few weeks before evaluating whether changes produced a useful effect.
This makes blogging poorly suited to business situations that require guaranteed immediate organic customer acquisition.
Advertising networks, affiliate programs, search engines, social platforms, and payment platforms can change eligibility, commissions, distribution, or policies.
A publisher relying heavily on one traffic source or monetization partner can therefore experience significant business impact from an external change.
Successful publishing companies can earn hundreds of thousands of dollars annually, but publicly promoted publisher case studies disproportionately represent businesses that succeeded.
They should be used to understand possible business models and economics rather than to estimate a beginner's expected income.
A company using its blog to sell a high-margin service or software product may not benefit from displaying third-party ads that send readers away.
The highest direct blog revenue strategy is not necessarily the strategy that maximizes the value of the overall business.
Yes.
Platforms including WordPress.com and Substack currently allow a person to publish without paying a recurring publishing fee. Someone who already owns a suitable computer or phone can therefore begin with $0 additional platform spending.
A custom domain, paid hosting, professional design, software, and outsourced content are upgrades rather than universal requirements for publishing the first articles.
No.
A hosted publishing platform can provide a platform-owned address, allowing the site to exist without separately purchasing a domain.
A custom domain becomes more useful when building an independent brand, company site, or long-term publication.
Domains are purchased through domain registrars or through some website and hosting providers.
For example, WordPress.com sells domain registrations and currently lists .com registrations at US$13 per year. This is one provider's current price rather than a global standard.
No.
WordPress is one option. Ghost and Substack are examples of other publishing systems, and businesses can also add a blog to an existing custom-built site.
The correct choice depends more on ownership, hosting, subscriptions, design flexibility, technical ability, and the intended business model than on blogging itself.
The major direct models are advertising, affiliate commissions, paid subscriptions, sponsorships, products, and services.
A blog can also make no direct publishing revenue while contributing substantial revenue to another business by attracting customers who later buy that company's products or services.
There is no reliable universal time-to-first-revenue figure covering blogging as a whole.
A publisher with an existing audience could make a sale shortly after publishing, while a new site dependent on organic search may need to wait for pages to be discovered, indexed, ranked, and visited.
Google itself states that search-related changes can take from hours to several months to show effects, so search-dependent blogging should not be treated as an immediate-revenue channel.

Ghost takes a different approach. Ghost(Pro)'s Publisher plan currently starts at US$29/mo when billed yearly and includes paid subscriptions. Ghost states that it charges 0% additional transaction fees, although payment-processor fees still apply.
This creates a practical tradeoff between paying a fixed platform cost and giving a percentage of subscription revenue to the publishing platform.
A blog can sell its own ebooks, templates, courses, databases, guides, downloads, or other Digital Products.
In this model, the blog may function both as the content product itself and as the customer-acquisition channel for higher-value products.
Revenue depends on product pricing, payment fees, conversion rate, refunds, and the cost of creating and supporting the product rather than on a standard blogging royalty.
Consultants, freelancers, agencies, lawyers, developers, designers, tradespeople, and other businesses can publish articles that attract readers with a relevant problem and convert some of them into inquiries.
A blog that produces one valuable client may therefore generate more economic value than a high-traffic advertising blog, even if the blog itself reports no advertising revenue.
Publishers with a sufficiently defined audience may sell sponsored articles, newsletter placements, branded sections, or other advertising directly to companies.
There is no universal sponsorship rate. Audience size, niche, geography, engagement, brand fit, and deliverables materially affect pricing.

Enough for basic early measurement |
WordPress.com currently provides a free plan with hosting, unlimited posts and pages, and 1 GB of media storage.
Substack also allows creators to publish free content without paying a publishing fee.
Therefore, someone who already owns a suitable device can technically begin publishing for $0 additional.
Someone intending to build a long-term independent site will commonly use a custom domain.
WordPress.com's current Personal plan is US$4/mo when billed annually and includes hosting plus a free custom domain for the first year.
WordPress.com currently lists a standard .com domain separately at US$13/yr. This is WordPress.com's own registration price and should not be interpreted as a universal .com price across registrars.
Self-hosted WordPress is another common route. The WordPress software itself can be used without a software-license charge, but the operator must obtain hosting and normally a domain separately.
Ghost(Pro) is designed around independent websites, newsletters, memberships, and subscriptions.
Current annual-billing prices include:
Ghost(Pro) plan | Price | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
Starter | US$18/mo | Blog or newsletter |
Publisher | US$29/mo | Custom publication and paid subscriptions |
Business | US$199/mo | Larger team |
The Starter plan supports up to 1,000 members. The Publisher plan adds paid subscriptions, integrations, custom themes, and advanced analytics.
Do not choose a publishing platform solely because it includes a promotional first-year domain. Renewal and migration conditions matter more over a multi-year period.
A simple blog usually needs:
homepage;
article pages;
category or topic navigation;
about or author information;
contact method;
privacy and other legally relevant pages where applicable.
A commercial site may additionally need:
product or service pages;
email signup;
checkout;
lead form;
pricing;
affiliate disclosures;
advertising disclosures.
Avoid building large amounts of infrastructure before publishing useful content.
Track at least:
visitors or sessions;
traffic sources;
landing pages;
search queries where available;
conversions relevant to the business.
Google Analytics can be used to measure website usage and customer journeys, and Google offers website analytics without a charge for the standard setup.
Google Search Console is useful when search traffic matters because it reports how the site is appearing and performing in Google Search.
Publishing an article does not guarantee search traffic.
Google automatically discovers many pages through crawling, but site owners can also provide a sitemap and request indexing or re-indexing of URLs through Search Console.
Google recommends making important pages reachable through normal internal links and creating content that is useful, unique, readable, and kept up to date.
A commercial blog generally performs a useful job for the reader before asking for a transaction.
Examples include:
answering a specific question;
comparing products;
explaining how to perform a task;
documenting original research;
providing a template;
reviewing a product;
explaining a costly decision;
solving a technical problem.
Generic articles written primarily to increase page count have limited value regardless of the publishing platform.
A blog using advertising needs ad inventory and sufficient audience.
An affiliate blog needs relevant commercial content and affiliate programs.
A subscription publication needs a reason for readers to pay repeatedly.
A product business needs routes from informational content to relevant products.
A service business needs a clear path from content to inquiry, booking, or contact.
Publishing content without connecting it to the intended economic action can produce traffic without meaningful business value.
Search traffic can fluctuate.
Email subscriptions, direct traffic, feeds, communities, and other audience relationships can reduce complete dependence on one discovery platform.
Newsletter functionality may be built into platforms such as Ghost or Substack, or handled with a separate email provider.
Old articles can become inaccurate as prices, software, regulations, products, and search behavior change.
Google explicitly recommends reviewing previously published content and updating or removing material when it is no longer relevant.
For example, one article could earn advertising revenue when it is viewed, affiliate revenue when a reader buys a recommended product, and product revenue when another reader joins an email list and later buys the publisher's own product.
email marketing;
image tools;
keyword or competitive research;
analytics;
backups;
security;
design tools;
automation;
content management extensions.
These should not automatically be included in a minimum startup budget.
A blog can grow organically without buying advertising.
Paid social advertising, search advertising, sponsorships, newsletter placements, and other acquisition costs become optional expenses if the business decides to purchase traffic or subscribers.
No.
A business blog can be economically useful if its articles attract customers for another product or service.
For that type of site, leads, signups, bookings, purchases, and customer acquisition are more useful measures than advertising revenue.
