SEO consulting is a service business that helps websites improve their visibility in organic search through audits, keyword research, technical recommendations, content strategy, on-page optimization, link analysis, and ongoing performance monitoring.
An SEO consultant may work independently, as part of an agency, or as a specialist supporting an internal marketing team. Unlike a general SEO guide, SEO consulting is focused on diagnosing a specific client's website, prioritizing problems, recommending actions, and often managing implementation over time.

SEO consultants analyze why a website is not performing as well as it could in search and recommend or implement improvements.
Common work includes:
SEO audits
Keyword research
Search intent analysis
Competitor research
Content gap analysis
Technical SEO
Internal linking
On-page optimization
Site architecture
Indexing analysis
Sitemap review
Canonicalization
Core Web Vitals review
Backlink analysis
Content planning
Rank tracking
Search performance reporting
Some consultants only provide strategy.
Others also implement changes directly in the client's website or work with developers, writers, and designers.
SEO consultants can charge hourly, per project, or through monthly retainers.
Upwork currently lists SEO experts at approximately $15–$35 per hour as a general marketplace hiring range.
SEO analysts are currently listed at approximately $25–$50 per hour.
More experienced consultants may charge significantly more depending on:
Technical specialization
Industry
Client size
Proven results
Strategy experience
International SEO
E-commerce SEO
SaaS SEO
Enterprise experience
These are marketplace hiring benchmarks rather than guaranteed earnings.
Upwork currently provides examples such as:
SEO service | Example price |
|---|---|
Technical SEO audit | $500–$2,000 |
On-page optimization | $1,000–$3,000 |
Link-building campaign | $1,500–$5,000 |
Content strategy | $2,000–$5,000 |
A technical audit may include:
Site crawl
Indexing analysis
Core Web Vitals review
Structured data review
Canonical issues
Redirects
Internal linking
Prioritized recommendations
Content strategy may include:
Keyword research
Topic clustering
Competitor analysis
Search intent
Content gaps
Editorial calendar
Page briefs
Pricing rises as the size and complexity of the site increase.
An SEO audit is one of the easiest consulting services to package.
The consultant reviews the website and produces a prioritized action plan.
An audit may cover:
Crawlability
Indexing
Site architecture
Internal links
Titles
Metadata
Content
Search performance
Backlinks
Page speed
Structured data
The client usually receives a report or presentation explaining what should be fixed first.
Audits are useful as a one-time service and can also lead to larger implementation projects.
The consultant identifies search topics relevant to the client's business.
Deliverables may include:
Target keywords
Search intent
Search volume estimates
Competition
Topic clusters
Recommended pages
Existing page mapping
Keyword research should not simply be a spreadsheet containing thousands of keywords.
The useful output is a plan explaining which topics deserve pages and why.
A content strategy turns search opportunities into a publishing plan.
Possible deliverables include:
Content gaps
Topic clusters
SEO consulting has a relatively low financial barrier.
Requirement | Example | Starting cost |
|---|---|---|
Computer | Existing computer | Already owned |
Search performance data | Google Search Console | Free |
Web analytics | Google Analytics | Free |
Technical inspection | Browser developer tools | Free |
SEO research | Ahrefs Free / Starter | Free or low-cost |
SEO research | Semrush Free | Free limited use |
Reporting | Spreadsheet or presentation software | Free options available |
A new consultant does not need an expensive SEO software subscription immediately.
Google Search Console provides real search data for verified websites and can be enough for many basic audits.
Paid tools become more useful when managing multiple clients or researching competitors.
Google Search Console is free.
It provides:
Search queries
Impressions
Clicks
Average position
Indexing information
Sitemap status
Link reports
URL inspection
Client Search Console access should usually be requested before beginning a serious SEO audit.
Ahrefs currently offers:
Plan | Current listed price |
|---|---|
Free | $0 |
Starter | $29/month in current help documentation |
Lite | Higher paid tier |
Standard | Higher paid tier |
Advanced | Higher paid tier |
Enterprise | Highest tier |
Ahrefs describes its Standard plan as suitable for freelance SEOs and marketing consultants.
Features can include:
Site Explorer
Before opening an SEO tool, understand:
What the company sells
Who buys it
Geographic market
Main competitors
Highest-value products or services
Conversion goals
Traffic alone is not the goal.
A keyword producing 1,000 irrelevant visitors may be less valuable than one producing 20 potential customers.
Useful access may include:
Google Search Console
Google Analytics
CMS
Website backend
Google Business Profile
Existing SEO tools
Do not request more permissions than necessary.
Some consultants only need read access when performing an audit.
Check:
Organic clicks
Impressions
Queries
Top pages
Declining pages
Branded vs non-branded searches
Countries
Devices
This establishes a baseline.
Without a baseline, it becomes difficult to measure whether consulting work improved performance.
Review technical issues such as:
A practical audit can include:
Executive summary
Current organic performance
Indexing review
Technical issues
Keyword opportunities
Competitor analysis
Content gaps
Internal linking
Backlink overview
Core Web Vitals
Priority action list
The report should distinguish between problems that need immediate attention and improvements that can be completed later.
Avoid offering:
"I do SEO."
Offer a specific result.
Examples:
"I audit SaaS websites and create an SEO growth plan."
"I help local businesses fix technical SEO and improve local visibility."
"I create keyword and content strategies for B2B companies."
"I identify why your website is not being indexed correctly."
"I optimize existing blog content that has stopped growing."
Specialization can make the service easier to sell.
Possible niches include:
SaaS
E-commerce
Local businesses
Publishers
Affiliate sites
B2B companies
A smaller audit can lead to:
SEO audit → Implementation project → Monthly SEO retainer
This reduces the commitment required from the first client.
Some consultants also offer a small initial website review before proposing a larger engagement.
Client provides:
Website URL
Search Console access
Analytics access if available
Main competitors
Target market
Consultant provides:
Technical crawl
Indexing review
Search performance analysis
Keyword review
Competitor analysis
Internal linking review
Priority action list
Final report
Optional upgrades:
Keyword research
Content strategy
Implementation
Monthly monitoring
Content briefs
Developer support
A defined audit is easier for a new consultant to quote than an unlimited promise to "improve rankings."
Potential business expenses include:
Cost | When it applies |
|---|---|
SEO software | Keyword, backlink, and competitor research |
Crawling software | Large technical audits |
Reporting tools | Client dashboards |
Contractor writers | Content implementation |
Developers | Technical implementation |
Outreach tools | Link acquisition campaigns |
Project management | Multiple clients |
Business website | Lead generation |
Software costs can increase quickly when an agency manages many client sites.
Do not purchase every SEO platform before having enough clients to justify it.
No consultant controls Google rankings.
Avoid promising:
Guaranteed #1 position
Guaranteed traffic
Guaranteed indexing
Guaranteed revenue
Google's own SEO documentation warns that nobody can guarantee a number-one ranking.
Some fixes can affect search relatively quickly.
Other changes can take weeks or months to produce measurable results.
Clients should understand this before beginning a long-term engagement.
SEO cannot compensate for every business problem.
Poor:
Product-market fit
Pricing
Website conversion
Customer service
Brand positioning
can reduce business results even if organic traffic grows.
A consultant can identify problems, but the client may not implement recommendations.
Record:
What was recommended
When it was recommended
Whether it was implemented
Otherwise the consultant may be blamed for problems that were never fixed.
Google continuously changes its systems.
A strategy should not depend entirely on one temporary ranking tactic.
Aggressive or manipulative link acquisition can violate search-engine spam policies.
Do not promise a fixed number of "high-authority backlinks" without understanding how those links are being obtained.
An SEO consultant analyzes a website's organic search performance, identifies problems and opportunities, and recommends or implements improvements involving technical SEO, content, keywords, internal links, and other search factors.
SEO is the overall practice of improving organic search visibility.
SEO consulting is a service where a specialist applies those practices to a specific client's website and business.
Not always.
Content strategy, keyword research, and many on-page tasks do not require programming.
Technical SEO becomes easier with knowledge of HTML, HTTP, JavaScript, redirects, canonicalization, and web architecture.
Yes.
Google Search Console, Google Analytics, browser developer tools, and limited SEO tool plans can be enough for initial projects.
Paid tools become more useful when researching competitors and managing multiple clients.
There is no universal price.
Upwork currently lists general SEO experts at approximately $15–$35/hour and SEO analysts at approximately $25–$50/hour.
Technical audits and strategy projects may cost from hundreds to several thousand dollars depending on scope.
Upwork currently gives an example range of approximately $500–$2,000 for a technical SEO audit.
Individual marketplace audit listings can start much lower, showing that pricing varies substantially with depth and provider positioning.
Deliverables depend on the engagement but may include:
Audit
Keyword research
Competitor analysis
Content strategy

Priority pages
Article briefs
Landing-page ideas
Internal linking plans
Publishing schedule
This service is especially relevant for SaaS, publishers, affiliate websites, and businesses that depend heavily on content marketing.
Technical SEO focuses on how search engines crawl, render, and index a website.
Common issues include:
Incorrect canonical URLs
Broken redirects
Duplicate pages
JavaScript rendering
Crawl problems
Sitemap errors
robots.txt problems
noindex mistakes
Site migrations
Page speed
Structured data
Technical SEO can command higher prices because it may require deeper understanding of web development and search-engine behavior.
The consultant improves existing pages.
Work may include:
Titles
Headings
Search intent
Internal links
Content structure
Missing sections
Keyword targeting
Calls to action
A consultant may optimize individual pages or entire sections of a site.
Local businesses may need help appearing for location-based searches.
Possible work includes:
Google Business Profile optimization
Local landing pages
Citation consistency
Local keyword research
Review strategy
Local competitor analysis
Typical customers include:
Dentists
Lawyers
Restaurants
Contractors
Clinics
Home-service companies
E-commerce SEO may involve:
Category pages
Product pages
Filters
Faceted navigation
Product structured data
Internal linking
Duplicate content
Product descriptions
Large product catalogs can create technical problems that do not exist on small informational websites.
Many consultants sell ongoing monthly services.
A retainer may include:
Keyword monitoring
Technical checks
Content planning
On-page optimization
Internal linking
Competitor monitoring
Reporting
Strategy calls
Recurring SEO management is attractive because SEO is an ongoing process rather than a one-time technical setup.
The scope should be clearly defined.
"Monthly SEO" without defined deliverables can create disagreements over what the client expects.
Keywords Explorer
Site Audit
Rank Tracker
Competitive analysis
Backlink analysis
A solo consultant can start with free tools or a smaller plan and upgrade when client revenue justifies it.
Semrush currently offers a Free tier and several paid SEO plans.
Its current SEO plan starts at approximately:
$139/month when billed monthly
$117.33/month equivalent when billed annually
That plan currently includes:
5 monitored websites
500 tracked keywords
Keyword research
Competitor analysis
Position Tracking
Site Audit
Higher plans provide larger limits, historical data, additional projects, and agency-oriented features.
Broken pages
Redirect chains
Duplicate titles
Missing titles
Canonicals
Indexability
Internal links
Orphan pages
Sitemap inconsistencies
Not every detected issue is equally important.
Prioritize problems that can realistically affect important pages.
Identify the main queries the business wants to target.
Search those queries and examine current results.
Determine whether the query expects:
Guide
Product page
Category page
Tool
Comparison
Local business
Video
A page can be technically perfect and still fail if it uses the wrong content format.
Build a manageable opportunity list.
Group related keywords by topic rather than creating a separate page for every slight variation.
Prioritize based on:
Relevance
Search demand
Competition
Business value
Existing site authority
Conversion potential
Compare:
Pages receiving organic traffic
Topics competitors cover
Backlinks
Site structure
Content depth
Internal linking
Search features
Competitor analysis should identify opportunities, not simply encourage copying competitors.
Do not give the client a list of 500 equally important problems.
A useful audit separates recommendations into groups such as:
High priority
Important pages blocked from indexing
Broken canonicalization
Major migration problems
Missing commercial landing pages
Medium priority
Weak internal linking
Missing content
Poor page targeting
Low priority
Minor metadata cleanup
Small cosmetic issues
Clients need to know what to fix first.
Each recommendation should explain:
Problem
Why it matters
Recommended fix
Priority
Responsible person
Expected effort
For example:
Problem: Important category pages have no internal links.
Recommendation: Add links from relevant navigation and category pages.
Priority: High
Owner: Developer / content team
This is more actionable than simply writing "Improve internal linking."
Depending on the service, the consultant may:
Make changes directly
Write tickets for developers
Create content briefs
Review writer output
Work with a web agency
Verify fixes after deployment
Implementation should be separated from recommendations when pricing projects.
Monitor:
Organic clicks
Impressions
Rankings
Conversions
Indexed pages
Priority landing pages
SEO performance should be reviewed over meaningful periods rather than reacting to daily fluctuations.
A client does not need a report containing only hundreds of keyword positions.
Explain:
What changed
What improved
What declined
What work was completed
What needs to happen next
Tie SEO work to business outcomes where possible.
Metrics such as:
Keyword difficulty
Search volume
Domain authority
Traffic estimates
come from third-party tools.
They are useful for comparison but should not be treated as exact Google data.
Freelance marketplaces contain thousands of low-priced SEO offers.
Competing only on price can be difficult.
Higher-value differentiation can come from:
Technical expertise
Industry specialization
Clear reporting
Better strategy
Implementation ability
Business understanding
Proven results
Implementation plan
Monthly reports
The scope should be agreed before work begins.
There is no fixed timeframe.
Technical fixes may be processed relatively quickly, while content and competitive ranking improvements can take much longer.
Performance should usually be evaluated over weeks or months rather than days.
No.
A consultant can improve the site's technical setup, content strategy, and overall competitiveness but cannot control search-engine rankings.
No.
Both can save significant research time, but Google Search Console and other free tools are sufficient for some basic consulting work.
A clearly scoped SEO audit is one of the easiest services to package.
It has a defined beginning and end and can lead naturally to implementation or monthly consulting.
Yes.
A solo consultant can expand into:
Technical SEO
Content strategy
Local SEO
Link acquisition
SEO content production
E-commerce SEO
Reporting
Conversion optimization
As the client base grows, writers, developers, analysts, and outreach specialists can handle different parts of delivery.
