Upwork is a freelance marketplace where clients post jobs and freelancers submit proposals, negotiate contracts, complete work, and receive payment through the platform.
Unlike Fiverr, where freelancers primarily publish predefined services and wait for buyers, much of Upwork revolves around actively finding jobs and sending proposals.
Creating a standard Freelancer Basic account is free.
The main freelancer costs are:
Freelancer service fees
Connects used to apply for jobs or promote visibility
Optional Freelancer Plus membership
Upwork currently charges a freelancer service fee ranging from:
0% to 15% per contract
The exact percentage is shown before the freelancer submits a proposal or accepts an offer.
Once a proposal, offer, or contract is sent, the fee for that contract is locked and does not change during the contract.
For example, if a contract carries a 10% fee and the freelancer bills:
$1,000
the service fee would be:
$100
leaving approximately:
$900
before taxes and other business expenses.
Do not assume every Upwork contract uses the same fee percentage.
Connects are Upwork's internal credits used for actions such as:
Submitting proposals
Boosting proposals
Activating the Availability Badge
Additional Connects currently cost:
$0.15 each
The number required to apply for a job varies.
Upwork determines the requirement based on factors including:
Project size
Scope
Marketplace demand
The number can also change while a job remains open.
For example, if a proposal requires 12 Connects:
12 × $0.15 = $1.80
This does not mean every proposal costs $1.80 because the required Connects vary and freelancers may also receive some Connects through platform programs.
The standard Upwork workflow is:
Client posts job → Freelancer searches jobs → Freelancer submits proposal → Client interviews candidates → Contract begins → Work is completed → Payment is released → Client leaves feedback
Freelancers can also receive:
Direct invitations
Offers
Project Catalog orders
Repeat contracts
Direct Contracts for eligible off-platform clients
The platform therefore supports both active client acquisition and inbound work.
A strong profile should clearly communicate:
Main service
Relevant experience
Portfolio
Skills
Hourly rate
Work history
Avoid describing yourself only with broad labels such as:
"Developer"
or:
"Digital marketer"
A more focused positioning might be:
"Shopify conversion optimization developer"
or:
"Google Ads specialist for local service businesses"
Specific positioning helps clients quickly understand what problem you solve.
A new freelancer may have no Upwork reviews.
Portfolio evidence becomes especially important in this stage.
Useful examples include:
Websites
Designs
Videos
Writing samples
Case studies
Software projects
Marketing results
The samples do not necessarily have to come from previous Upwork contracts.
Filter jobs based on factors such as:
Skills
Budget
Project type
Client history
Experience level
Do not apply to every remotely relevant listing.
Each proposal can consume Connects, making poor targeting a real acquisition cost.
Hourly contracts use time-based billing.
The current minimum rate is:
$3/hour
Freelancers can track qualifying time through the Upwork Desktop App.
A normal billing cycle works like:
Work Monday–Sunday → Client billed Monday → Review period → Freelancer normally receives funds the following Wednesday
In most cases, hourly earnings become available approximately:
10 days after the weekly billing period ends
Qualifying tracked time can receive Hourly Payment Protection.
Manual time may not receive the same protection.
Fixed-price contracts are based on agreed deliverables and milestones.
The current minimum fixed-price contract amount is:
$5
The workflow is:
Client funds milestone → Freelancer completes work → Freelancer submits milestone → Client approves → Payment enters security period
If the client does not approve or request changes, funded milestone payments can automatically release after the review period.
Upwork currently gives clients:
14 days
to review submitted fixed-price milestone work.
After approval, fixed-price funds generally have an additional:
5-day security period
before becoming available for withdrawal.
Project Catalog allows freelancers to sell predefined services rather than applying to individual job posts.
A listing can include:
Scope
Price
Delivery time
Service tiers
Add-ons
Images
Video
Find job → Check client and scope → Decide whether it is a strong fit → Submit tailored proposal → Interview → Contract
The important step is deciding not to apply to weak matches.
Suppose:
20 proposals × 12 Connects each = 240 Connects
At $0.15 per Connect:
240 × $0.15 = $36
If those applications are poorly targeted, proposal costs and time can accumulate without producing meaningful interviews.
Treat proposals as customer acquisition rather than unlimited free applications.
Win initial project → Deliver reliably → Client rehiring → Larger project → Ongoing contract
Repeat clients can dramatically improve marketplace economics.
The freelancer spends less time:
Searching
Writing proposals
Buying Connects
Interviewing
and more time doing paid work.
Long-term relationships also contribute positively to Upwork's reputation system.
Define repeatable service → Create Project Catalog listing → Client buys package → Deliver standard process → Collect reviews
This works well for services with predictable scope.
Examples include:
Logo design
Video editing
Website audits
SEO audits
Landing pages
Resume writing
Automation setup
For freelancers building a broader Freelancing business, combining job proposals with productized services can create multiple ways to acquire clients.
Connects give proposals a direct cost.
Prioritize jobs where:
Your experience strongly matches
The budget is realistic
The scope is understandable
You can demonstrate relevant work
Twenty weak proposals are not necessarily better than five highly relevant ones.
Some clients post placeholder or flexible budgets.
Read the project description before rejecting or accepting a job based purely on the headline figure.
At the same time, avoid assuming every low-budget project will magically become a high-value contract.
If you want to receive $50/hour and the contract has a 10% service fee:
Required billing rate is approximately:
$50 ÷ 0.90 = $55.56/hour
Check the actual service fee shown on the proposal because Upwork's fee can range from 0% to 15%.
For hourly Payment Protection, use Upwork's time tracker correctly.
Tracked time should include:
Work-related activity
Appropriate screenshots
Relevant memos
Reasonable activity levels
Manual time does not receive the same protection.
Do not start significant fixed-price work before confirming that the relevant milestone has been funded.
Payment Protection centers around funded milestones.
A written promise from the client is not equivalent to funded project funds.
For fixed-price projects, define:
The most obvious use is finding clients for services such as:
Software development
Design
Marketing
Writing
Video editing
Consulting
Customer support
AI services
For a new freelancer without an audience or referral network, Upwork can provide access to existing demand.
Agencies can also operate through Upwork.
This can be useful when several specialists collaborate on:
Development
Marketing
Design
Automation
Content
An agency should still calculate service fees and proposal-acquisition costs when determining margins.
Experienced professionals can sell:
Strategy
Audits
Implementation
Advisory work
Specialized consultations
The marketplace is not limited to simple low-cost tasks.
Upwork can function as one client-acquisition channel rather than the entire business.
A freelancer might use:
Upwork + referrals + content + direct outreach
This reduces dependence on any one marketplace.
Upwork also offers Direct Contracts for certain clients brought to the platform by the freelancer.
For freelancer-initiated Direct Contracts, the current freelancer service fee is:
5%
Active Freelancer Plus members currently pay:
0% freelancer service fee
on these eligible Direct Contracts.
For example:
External client → Freelancer creates Direct Contract → Client accepts through Upwork → Work and payment managed through Upwork
This can be useful when a freelancer finds a client independently but wants to use Upwork's contract and payment infrastructure.
However, Direct Contract rules differ depending on who initiated the relationship, and newer client-initiated Direct Contract arrangements have different pricing and protection rules.
Check the current Direct Contract documentation before choosing this route.
Job Success Score, or JSS, is one of Upwork's main freelancer reputation metrics.
It considers factors including:
Client feedback
Contract outcomes
Long-term client relationships
Upwork calculates JSS daily using:
6-month
12-month
24-month
history and displays the best applicable score.
A JSS of:
90% or higher
is considered strong and can contribute toward eligibility for Top Rated status.
A freelancer typically receives a JSS after having at least:
Two contract outcomes within 24 months
Outcomes with at least two clients
JSS should not be treated as the only goal.
Delivering good work, selecting suitable clients, and maintaining healthy long-term relationships are the underlying behaviors that matter.
Because Connects have monetary value, applying indiscriminately can create meaningful acquisition costs.
Track:
Connects spent → Interviews → Contracts won → Revenue
rather than only counting how many proposals you send.
Popular categories may have many freelancers competing for the same jobs.
A generic profile makes differentiation difficult.
Specialization, evidence, and clear positioning usually matter more than simply listing more skills.
The freelancer service fee can range from 0% to 15%.
Always evaluate earnings after the contract-specific fee.
Weak contract outcomes can make future client acquisition harder.
Do not accept clearly unsuitable projects merely to increase contract count.
Not every hour entered into Upwork automatically qualifies for Hourly Payment Protection.
Manual time and improperly tracked time can fall outside protection.
Starting work before a milestone is funded weakens payment protection.
Confirm funding before beginning each substantial milestone.
A freelancer relying entirely on Upwork depends on:
Marketplace demand
Search visibility
Account status
Platform rules
Fees
Connect pricing
Successful freelancers may eventually diversify their acquisition channels.
Platform | Best Fit | Main Difference |
|---|---|---|
Upwork | Freelancers actively pursuing project and long-term client work | Proposal-driven marketplace with hourly and fixed-price contracts |
Fiverr | Productized freelance services | Buyers primarily discover predefined Gigs |
Direct freelancing | Established freelancers with their own acquisition channels | No marketplace required, but freelancer must find clients |
Agency model | Teams selling larger engagements | Higher operational complexity and potentially larger contracts |
Choose Upwork when:
You want access to an existing freelance job marketplace
You prefer applying to specific client projects
Hourly or milestone-based contracts are important
Marketplace payment infrastructure is valuable
Choose Fiverr when predefined service packages fit your work better.
Choose independent Freelancing when you can reliably generate clients through referrals, outreach, SEO, content, or other channels and want greater control over the relationship.
The standard Freelancer Basic account is free.
Freelancers may still pay service fees on earnings and use paid Connects when applying for work or using certain visibility features.
The current Freelancer Service Fee ranges from 0% to 15% depending on the contract.
The exact fee is shown before you submit the proposal or accept the offer and is locked once the proposal, offer, or contract is sent.
Additional Connects currently cost $0.15 each.
The number required for a proposal varies by job.
No.
The number varies based on factors such as project size, scope, and marketplace demand and can change while a job is open.
They serve somewhat different workflows.
Upwork is stronger for actively applying to client jobs and managing hourly or milestone-based contracts.
Fiverr is more focused on listing predefined services that buyers can discover and purchase.
No system guarantees every payment, but Upwork provides Hourly and Fixed-Price Payment Protection when the contract and work meet the applicable requirements.
Freelancer Plus is Upwork's optional paid freelancer membership.
Current benefits include:
90 additional Connects each month
Access to additional Upwork tools
Competitor bid visibility
Other membership features
Upwork currently does not publish one universal Freelancer Plus price on its public Help Center page.
The current price is shown inside the freelancer's Upwork account under:
Membership plan → Change Plan
Because the displayed price may vary, use the amount shown in the account rather than an older third-party price.
A proposal should show why you are appropriate for the specific job.
A practical structure is:
Client problem → Relevant experience → How you would approach it → One useful question or next step
Avoid sending the same generic proposal to dozens of jobs.
Upwork supports:
Hourly contracts
Fixed-price contracts
Hourly work suits projects where scope or workload may change.
Fixed-price work is generally better when the deliverable and scope are clearly defined.
PDF samples
For example:
"Build a WordPress landing page"
can be offered as:
Starter → One-page setup
Standard → Custom landing page
Advanced → Landing page + integrations
This makes Project Catalog conceptually closer to Fiverr's Gig model.
Upwork currently states that Project Catalog contains more than:
290,000 projects
across categories such as development, design, marketing, writing, support, and consulting.
Deliverables
Revisions
Deadline
Required client materials
Exclusions
Poorly defined scope can turn a profitable $500 project into a large amount of unpaid additional work.
Winning a new client usually costs more effort than continuing with a satisfied existing client.
A freelancer with several good repeat clients may rely less heavily on constantly buying Connects and submitting proposals.
Freelancers can spend extra Connects to boost proposals into prominent positions.
Boosting is optional.
Because it adds acquisition cost, reserve it for jobs where:
The match is unusually strong
The project value justifies the extra spend
Your profile and portfolio are competitive
Paying more Connects cannot compensate for a weak proposal or poor fit.
