Copywriting is a service business focused on writing persuasive marketing and sales content for businesses. Common projects include website copy, landing pages, emails, advertisements, product descriptions, sales pages, scripts, and other material designed to encourage actions such as purchases, signups, bookings, or inquiries.
The business can start as solo freelancing with very little equipment and later expand into retainers, specialized consulting, or an agency. Unlike general content writing, copywriting is usually judged more directly by business outcomes such as conversion rate, leads, sales, or response rather than simply publishing useful information.
Item | Details |
|---|---|
Main revenue | Client writing projects |
Other revenue | Monthly retainers, strategy, consulting, audits |
Startup cost | Very low |
Inventory required | None |
Main skill | Persuasive business writing |
Common work | Websites, landing pages, email, ads, sales pages |
Common clients | SaaS, ecommerce, agencies, creators, professional services |
Pricing models | Hourly, project, retainer, value-based |
Typical marketplace rate | Upwork currently lists copywriters around $19–$45/hour |
Main acquisition channels | Referrals, outbound, freelance marketplaces, content |
Main constraint | Skilled research and writing time |
Main risk | Writing unsupported or misleading marketing claims |
A copywriter writes content intended to influence an action.
Examples include:
Visitor → Landing page → Sign up
Subscriber → Email → Buy product
Search visitor → Service page → Book consultation
Ad viewer → Advertisement → Visit product page
The writing supports a specific business objective.
This differs from writing whose primary goal is simply:
Education
Entertainment
News
Documentation
although the categories can overlap.
The distinction is useful but not absolute.
Primary objective:
Persuasion or conversion
Examples:
Sales page
Landing page
Advertisement
Product page
Promotional email
Homepage
Primary objective:
Information or audience building
Examples:
Blog article
Guide
Tutorial
Research article
For example:
Article:
"How Email Marketing Works"
is primarily content.
Email:
"Start Your Free Trial Today"
is primarily copy.
A freelancer can offer both, but clients may value and price them differently.
Website projects can include:
Homepage
About page
Service pages
Product pages
Contact page
A copywriter needs to understand:
Customer
Offer
Competitors
Brand voice
Conversion goal
Website copy should not simply describe the company.
It should help visitors understand what the business offers and what to do next.
Landing pages are designed around a specific campaign or offer.
Typical structure:
Traffic source → Headline → Problem → Offer → Evidence → CTA
Possible goals include:
Purchase
Trial
Lead
Demo
Download
Landing-page copy is often closely connected to paid advertising.
Email work can include:
Welcome sequences
Sales campaigns
Product launches
Abandoned-cart emails
Re-engagement
Newsletters
This can support broader Email Marketing.
A copywriter may charge for:
General copywriting is easy to enter but difficult to differentiate.
Broad:
Freelance copywriter
More specific:
Email copywriter for ecommerce brands
or:
Landing-page copywriter for B2B SaaS
or:
Website copywriter for law firms
Specialization can improve:
Research speed
Portfolio relevance
Client trust
Pricing
Referrals
A niche does not have to remain permanent.
It can make early client acquisition easier.
Good copy normally starts before writing.
Research:
Customer problems
Desired outcomes
Objections
Existing alternatives
Product features
Competitor messaging
Sources can include:
Customer interviews
Reviews
Sales calls
Support tickets
Surveys
Forums
Existing marketing data
Do not invent customer problems simply because they sound persuasive.
Starting with one clear deliverable can make sales easier.
Examples:
Homepage rewrite
Landing page
Five-email welcome sequence
Product-page copy
Avoid beginning with:
"I can write anything."
A beginner without clients can create practice projects.
For example:
Choose existing product → Analyze current page → Write alternative version → Explain reasoning
Clearly label speculative work as a sample rather than pretending it was paid client work.
A portfolio can include:
Sample
Objective
Copywriting can be priced using several models.
Upwork's current 2026 rate guide lists copywriters approximately around:
$19–$45/hour
on its marketplace.
This is marketplace data rather than a universal industry rate.
Experienced specialists working directly with businesses can price differently.
Hourly pricing is useful when project scope is uncertain.
The disadvantage is that increased efficiency can reduce billable hours.
Example:
Homepage rewrite:
$800
Landing page:
$1,500
Email sequence:
$1,200
These are hypothetical examples, not standard market rates.
Project pricing gives the client a predictable total cost.
The writer must estimate:
Research
Writing
Meetings
Revisions
Administration
before setting the fee.
Example:
$3,000/month
for:
8 marketing emails
2 landing-page revisions
Campaign strategy
Monthly reporting call
Retainers create recurring revenue.
They also create recurring workload.
Scope should be defined carefully.
A project may be priced partly according to the economic importance of the copy.
Suppose a landing-page project requires:
Research = 4 hours
Client calls = 2 hours
Writing = 8 hours
Revisions = 4 hours
Administration = 2 hours
Total:
20 hours
If the project pays:
$1,000
effective gross rate:
$1,000 ÷ 20 = $50/hour
If revisions expand the project to:
35 hours
effective gross rate falls to:
approximately $28.57/hour
before taxes and business expenses.
This is why revision and scope limits matter.
Discovery → Customer research → Competitor research → Messaging → Draft → Client review → Revision → Final copy
Do not start immediately by rewriting individual sentences.
First understand what the page needs to communicate.
Traffic source → Audience → Offer → Objections → Page structure → Copy → Design collaboration → Testing
The copywriter should know where traffic is coming from.
A visitor from a Google search may arrive with different intent than someone seeing a social advertisement.
Signup → Welcome → Education → Proof → Offer → Follow-up
For example:
Email 1 → Welcome
Email 2 → Problem
Email 3 → Useful method
Email 4 → Case study
Email 5 → Product offer
The exact sequence should depend on the customer journey.
Copywriting without customer research often becomes generic.
Instead of:
"Our innovative solution saves you time."
research may reveal:
"Finance teams spend three hours every Friday reconciling these reports manually."
Specific problems usually produce stronger writing.
Features describe the product.
Benefits explain why those features matter.
Feature:
Automated report generation
Possible benefit:
Reduce time spent manually preparing recurring reports.
Do not invent benefits that the product does not actually provide.
The page should make the next action obvious.
Examples:
Start free trial
Book consultation
Request quote
Buy now
Do not use several competing calls to action unless the page genuinely requires them.
Phrases such as:
Best in the world
Guaranteed results
Scientifically proven
Double your revenue
can create both credibility and legal problems when unsupported.
The U.S. Federal Trade Commission states that objective advertising claims require a reasonable basis and supporting evidence.
Possible proof includes:
Customer testimonials
Case studies
Product data
A good copywriting portfolio should match the clients you want.
If you want SaaS clients, show:
SaaS landing page
SaaS homepage
SaaS email sequence
If you want ecommerce:
Product page
Promotional email
Meta ad copy
The portfolio should make it easy for a prospective client to imagine hiring you for a similar project.
A useful workflow is:
Identify business → Find weak or outdated page → Create specific observation → Contact decision maker
Avoid generic:
"I am a copywriter looking for work."
A relevant message demonstrates how you think.
Marketing, advertising, SEO, and web design agencies regularly need copy.
A freelancer can work as a subcontractor rather than finding every end client individually.
This can reduce sales workload but usually gives the writer less control over pricing.
Satisfied clients can become one of the strongest acquisition sources.
At project completion:
Deliver → Ask for feedback → Request testimonial → Ask for appropriate introduction
Copywriters can work on:
Product descriptions
Landing pages
Email campaigns
Advertisements
Promotions
Ecommerce gives clearer conversion data than many other industries.
SaaS copy can include:
Homepage
Feature pages
Pricing pages
Email onboarding
Paid ads
Case studies
The copywriter often needs enough technical understanding to explain the product without misleading customers.
Creators can hire copywriters for:
Course launches
Newsletters
Digital products
Memberships
Sponsorship materials
For Digital Products, sales copy can become a meaningful part of conversion.
Agencies frequently outsource writing when they have:
Designers
Media buyers
SEO specialists
but lack enough internal writing capacity.
This can create recurring subcontracting relationships.
A freelancer can move from one-time work toward recurring contracts.
For example:
Client A = $2,000/month
Client B = $2,500/month
Client C = $1,500/month
Monthly revenue:
$6,000
The advantage is predictable revenue.
The risk is that clients can gradually request more work without increasing the retainer.
Define:
Number of deliverables
Meetings
Turnaround
Revisions
Communication
Copywriting initially scales poorly because the writer personally produces the work.
Possible expansion paths include:
Specialists can sometimes charge more for high-value work.
Examples:
Conversion copywriting
SaaS copywriting
Email copywriting
Create fixed packages.
Example:
SaaS Homepage Package
Includes:
Research
Homepage copy
Two revisions
Delivery within defined period
Standardization simplifies selling and delivery.
The founder can evolve into:
Sales + Strategy + Editing
while other writers produce drafts.
This creates an agency model.
Quality control becomes a major operational responsibility.
Experienced copywriters can sell:
Messaging strategy
Conversion audits
Voice-of-customer research
Sales funnel analysis
This can reduce dependency on producing every word personally.
AI tools can accelerate parts of copywriting such as:
Brainstorming
Variations
Research organization
Draft structures
Editing
Summarization
A useful workflow can be:
Customer research → Human strategy → AI-assisted draft or variations → Human verification → Final copy
The risk is producing generic copy based on guessed customer information.
AI does not know whether:
Product claims are true
Testimonials are legitimate
Customer data is current
Legal claims are supportable
The copywriter remains responsible for verification.
For SEO-related copy, Google recommends creating helpful, reliable, people-first content rather than producing content primarily to manipulate rankings.
Copywriting can create legal exposure because marketing language makes claims about products and services.
In the United States, FTC advertising guidance states that advertising must be:
Truthful
Non-deceptive
Evidence-based for objective claims
For example:
"Customers reduce processing time by 47%"
should be supported by appropriate evidence.
Do not turn:
"One customer achieved 47%"
into:
"Customers typically achieve 47%"
without evidence supporting that broader claim.
Testimonials must represent genuine experiences.
A copywriter should not:
Invent testimonials
Change their meaning
Hide important limitations
Use exceptional results as typical without appropriate context
When the product operates in regulated sectors such as health or finance, additional advertising rules can apply.
Good grammar does not solve poor positioning.
Research should usually precede copy.
Clients rarely care how many words were written.
They care whether the page helps:
Explain the product
Generate leads
Produce sales
Pricing purely per word often makes less sense for conversion-focused copywriting.
Unlimited revisions create unpredictable workload.
Define a revision process before beginning.
Persuasive writing does not justify false or exaggerated claims.
Verify important factual and performance claims.
Strong copy can improve communication.
It cannot guarantee demand for:
Weak product
Bad pricing
Poor customer experience
If customers do not want the offer, rewriting headlines alone may not solve the problem.
When possible, compare business results before and after changes.
Possible metrics include:
Conversion rate
Leads
Purchases
Email clicks
Replies
Do not claim causation where the data cannot support it.
Generating more words faster does not create better copy.
The valuable work increasingly lies in:
Model | Best Fit | Main Difference |
|---|---|---|
Copywriting | Conversion-focused writing | Persuasion and sales |
Freelance Writing | Articles and broader written content | More informational |
Content Marketing | Ongoing audience acquisition | Broader strategy and distribution |
Social Media Management | Recurring social-channel operation | Includes publishing and management |
SEO Consulting | Search strategy | Less direct writing work |
Marketing Agency | Full marketing delivery | Broader service scope |
Choose copywriting when:
Businesses need persuasive customer-facing messaging
Research and writing are your strengths
Marketing outcomes can be connected to the work
You prefer project or retainer service work
Choose Freelance Writing when the work is mainly articles, guides, editorial content, or informational material.
A copywriter writes marketing material designed to encourage actions such as purchases, signups, bookings, replies, or inquiries.
Not exactly.
Copywriting generally focuses more directly on persuasion and conversion, while content writing usually focuses more heavily on education, information, and audience building.
The two can overlap.
Pricing varies significantly.
Upwork's current 2026 marketplace guide lists copywriters around $19–$45 per hour, but direct-client specialists can use very different project, retainer, or value-based pricing.
There is no universal degree requirement.
Clients generally care more about writing ability, understanding of marketing and customers, portfolio quality, and demonstrated results.
AI can produce drafts and variations quickly.
However, effective commercial copy still requires customer research, product knowledge, positioning, factual verification, strategy, and accountability for marketing claims.
Solo copywriting remains time-based.
Scaling can come through higher-value specialization, productized services, retainers, consulting, or hiring additional writers.
Individual emails
Full sequences
Monthly campaign retainers
Advertising copy can include:
Google Ads
Meta Ads
LinkedIn Ads
Display ads
Video hooks
Ads usually have less space than sales pages.
This makes message clarity particularly important.
Sales pages can be used for:
Courses
Coaching
SaaS
Digital products
Services
A typical flow might include:
Problem
→ Desired outcome
→ Offer
→ Benefits
→ Proof
→ Objections
→ Price
→ Call to action
Long copy is not automatically better.
Use as much copy as required to help the customer make an informed decision.
Copy
Explanation
Result where legitimately available
Three strong relevant examples can be more useful than 30 unrelated writing samples.
Possible channels include:
Existing network
Direct outreach
Upwork
Fiverr
Content marketing
Agencies
Start selling before spending months building a complicated personal brand.
For example:
A homepage for a small local business
and:
A sales page supporting millions of dollars of annual advertising
do not necessarily have equal business value.
However, value-based pricing still requires:
Credibility
Clear scope
Understanding of client economics
It should not be used simply as an excuse to quote arbitrary high prices.
Research
Demonstrations
Testimonials should not be invented or rewritten into claims that the customer did not actually make.
FTC guidance also requires endorsements and testimonials to be truthful and not misleading.
Example contract term:
Two revision rounds included
Additional revisions:
Billed separately
This prevents an apparently small project from turning into unlimited editing.
Research
Strategy
Judgment
Positioning
Verification
rather than basic text production.
