Web design is the process of planning and creating the visual layout, user experience, structure, and interactive elements of websites.
Web designers can work as freelancers, contractors, employees, or agency owners. Services can range from designing a single landing page in Figma to creating and launching complete business websites using platforms such as Webflow, Framer, Wix, or WordPress.

Web design includes more than choosing colors and fonts.
Common work includes:
Planning page structure
Creating wireframes
Designing layouts
Choosing typography
Creating color systems
Designing navigation
Creating responsive mobile layouts
Designing buttons and forms
Improving user experience
Creating reusable components
Preparing assets
Building prototypes
Working with developers
Building websites in no-code or low-code platforms
Testing the final site on different screen sizes
Some web designers only provide design files.
Others provide a complete service from planning through launch.
Web design and web development overlap but are not identical.
Web design primarily focuses on:
Layout
Visual design
User experience
Typography
Navigation
Responsive behavior
Page structure
Web development focuses more on:
Frontend code
Backend systems
Databases
Authentication
APIs
Custom application logic
Tools such as Webflow, Framer, Wix, and WordPress have made the distinction less strict because one person can now design and launch many websites without writing the entire site manually.
Web designers can charge hourly, per page, per project, or through ongoing maintenance retainers.
Upwork currently lists web designers at approximately $15–$30 per hour as its median marketplace range.
Actual rates can be considerably higher for designers with expertise in:
Conversion-focused landing pages
SaaS websites
E-commerce
UX strategy
Webflow development
Branding
Complex web applications
Marketplace rates should be treated as hiring benchmarks rather than guaranteed income.
Upwork currently provides examples such as:
Project | Example price |
|---|---|
Landing page design | $300–$1,500 |
Business website design | $1,500–$5,000 |
E-commerce website design | $3,000–$10,000 |
Custom web application design | $5,000–$15,000+ |
A landing page project may include:
One page
Responsive design
Call-to-action placement
Basic visual hierarchy
A business website may include:
5–10 pages
Custom layouts
CMS integration
Responsive design
Brand-consistent UI
E-commerce projects can cost more because they may include:
Product pages
Collections
Cart design
Checkout flow
Search
Navigation
Payment integration
Mobile optimization
Landing pages are one of the simplest web design services to package.
Common customers include:
SaaS companies
Agencies
App developers
Consultants
Course creators
Advertising campaigns
A service may include:
Page structure
Hero section
Features
Social proof
Pricing
FAQ
Calls to action
Mobile design
Landing pages can be sold as design-only projects or as complete design-and-build services.
Small businesses often need websites containing:
Home
About
Services
Contact
FAQ
Blog
Location information
A web designer can provide the entire project including design, setup, CMS, responsive layouts, and launch.
Many clients already have websites but dislike:
Outdated appearance
Poor mobile design
Confusing navigation
Weak conversion
Web design has a relatively low financial barrier if the designer already owns a computer.
Requirement | Example | Starting cost |
|---|---|---|
Computer | Existing laptop or desktop | Already owned |
Design software | Figma Starter | Free |
Website builder | Webflow Starter | Free |
Portfolio | Figma, free site, or hosted portfolio | Free possible |
Fonts | Free commercial fonts available | $0 possible |
Stock assets | Free libraries available | $0 possible |
Domain | Optional when learning | Not required |
A beginner can therefore learn and build portfolio projects without buying professional software immediately.
Paid plans become more important when working with clients, collaborating with teams, using custom domains, or publishing larger websites.
Figma currently offers a free Starter plan.
Its current Professional pricing includes:
Seat | Price |
|---|---|
Full seat | $16/month |
Dev seat | $12/month |
Collab seat | $3/month |
The free Starter plan currently includes:
Unlimited drafts
UI kits and templates
Limited access to Figma products
AI credits
Professional adds features such as:
Unlimited files and folders within a team
Team libraries
Advanced prototyping
Improved developer handoff
A solo beginner does not need a paid Figma plan to start learning web design.
Webflow can be used for both designing and publishing websites.
Its current Starter Site plan is free.
Current paid Site plans include:
Plan | Price when billed yearly |
|---|---|
Starter | Free |
Basic | $15/month |
Premium | $25/month |
The free Starter plan includes:
Webflow.io domain
2 static pages
1 GB bandwidth
Limited CMS
50 form submissions
Webflow AI
The Basic plan adds:
Custom domain
Up to 300 static pages
10 GB bandwidth
Unlimited form submissions
Webflow also has separate Workspace plans for designers, freelancers, and agencies.
Current Workspace pricing includes:
Workspace | Price when billed yearly |
|---|---|
Starter | Free |
Before designing anything, determine why the website exists.
Common goals include:
Generate leads
Sell products
Book appointments
Explain a service
Collect email subscribers
Sell software
Build trust
Display a portfolio
A visually attractive website can still fail if it does not help the visitor take the intended action.
Understand:
Who visits the site
What they want
What problem they have
What information they need
What would prevent them from buying
What action the client wants them to take
This influences page structure and content hierarchy.
List the required pages.
For example:
Home
About
Services
Pricing
FAQ
Contact
Avoid designing pages before the scope is clear.
A five-page website and a 30-page website should not be quoted as the same project.
Create a rough wireframe before spending time on detailed styling.
A landing page might contain:
There is no single required tool stack for web design.
A practical setup may include:
UI design: Figma
Website building: Webflow, Framer, Wix, or WordPress
Graphics: Figma, Photoshop, Illustrator, or Canva
Icons: Licensed or free icon libraries
Images: Client assets, photography, stock libraries, or generated assets
Fonts: Google Fonts or licensed commercial fonts
Client feedback: Figma comments or project-management tools
Analytics: Google Analytics or another analytics platform
SEO: Platform SEO controls and Search Console
Domain: Client-owned domain registrar
A designer does not need every tool.
Figma plus one website-building platform is enough to begin offering complete small-business website projects.
Useful skills include:
Layout
Typography
Color
Visual hierarchy
Responsive design
UX fundamentals
Wireframing
Prototyping
Basic accessibility
Client communication
Basic conversion principles
Designers who also build websites may benefit from:
HTML
CSS
Basic JavaScript
CMS concepts
Domains
DNS
Hosting
Forms
Basic SEO
Coding is not required for every project, but understanding how websites are implemented makes designs easier to build correctly.
Avoid positioning the service only as:
"I make websites."
Choose a more specific offer.
Examples:
"I design landing pages for SaaS companies."
"I build websites for local service businesses."
"I redesign outdated small-business websites."
"I design and build Webflow websites for startups."
"I create conversion-focused landing pages for paid ads."
A specialized offer makes it easier for clients to understand the result they are buying.
Create several portfolio projects that match the target market.
For example, if targeting SaaS clients, create:
SaaS homepage
Pricing page
Feature page
Mobile version
Do not rely only on unrelated experimental designs.
Client provides:
Logo
Business information
Services
Contact information
Existing brand assets
Photos if available
Designer provides:
Homepage
About page
Services page
Contact page
Mobile-responsive design
Basic contact form
Website build
Domain connection
Two revision rounds
Optional upgrades:
Additional pages
Blog
CMS
Copywriting
Booking integration
E-commerce
Logo design
Analytics
Ongoing maintenance
This is easier to quote than offering unlimited generic web design.
Potential costs include:
Cost | When it applies |
|---|---|
Design software | Paid team or collaboration features |
Website builder | Client site hosting |
Domain | If included in the service |
Stock photography | Commercial visual assets |
Fonts | Premium typography |
Plugins | Additional website functionality |
Templates | Faster starting point |
Hosting | Depending on platform |
Business email setup | |
Contractor | Development or copywriting support |
Decide whether platform subscriptions are:
Included in the project price
Paid directly by the client
Reimbursed separately
For recurring website costs, having the client own the billing account can make long-term handoff easier.
A five-page website can gradually become:
10 pages
Blog
Booking system
E-commerce
Custom animations
Copywriting
Logo redesign
Define the scope before beginning.
Additional features should be priced separately.
Unlimited revisions can destroy project profitability.
Define:
Number of revision rounds
What counts as a revision
When additional work becomes billable
A complete change in design direction should not automatically count as a small revision.
Web projects often stall because the client has not prepared:
Copy
Product photos
Team photos
Pricing
Service descriptions
Legal pages
Define who is responsible for content and when it must be delivered.
Designing only the desktop version creates problems later.
Responsive design should be included in the original project scope.
A client may continue paying for:
Website hosting
Domain
Web design is the planning and creation of a website's layout, visual style, navigation, user experience, and responsive behavior.
No.
Tools such as Figma, Webflow, Framer, Wix, and WordPress allow many websites to be designed and built without traditional programming.
Basic HTML and CSS knowledge can still be useful.
Yes.
Figma currently has a free Starter plan, and Webflow also provides free Starter options for learning and building test projects.
A paid plan may be required when publishing a client website on a custom domain.
Upwork currently lists a median web designer range of approximately $15–$30/hour.
Project pricing can vary from a few hundred dollars for a landing page to several thousand dollars for business, e-commerce, and application design.
Upwork currently gives a marketplace example of approximately $300–$1,500 for landing page design.
Actual pricing depends on whether the service includes research, copywriting, responsive design, development, animations, and revisions.
Upwork currently gives an example range of approximately $1,500–$5,000 for a 5–10 page business website design.
A complete design-and-build service can be priced differently from design-only work.
Figma is one of the most widely used interfaces for UI and web design and offers a free Starter plan.
It is useful for wireframes, page design, components, prototypes, and developer handoff.
Either can be useful if you want to deliver complete websites rather than design files only.
Webflow provides a strong CMS and production website platform.
Framer is also widely used for visually driven marketing websites and fast publishing.
The better choice depends on the type of client work you want to specialize in.

Inconsistent branding
Slow content management
A redesign can be easier to sell because the client already understands why a website matters.
E-commerce designers work on:
Homepages
Product collections
Product pages
Navigation
Cart
Checkout
Promotional sections
Mobile shopping experience
E-commerce work can become more valuable when design decisions directly affect purchases.
SaaS companies commonly need:
Homepage
Product pages
Features
Pricing page
Comparison pages
Use-case pages
Documentation entry pages
SaaS web designers may specialize in conversion-focused marketing websites rather than application UI.
A designer can charge not only for the design but also for building the final website.
For example:
Figma design → Webflow build → Responsive setup → CMS → Forms → Domain connection → Launch
This increases the amount of value delivered without requiring traditional full-stack development.
Recurring services may include:
New landing pages
Text updates
New sections
Blog layout changes
Conversion experiments
Design updates
CMS management
Seasonal campaigns
This can turn one-time projects into recurring revenue.

Wireframes help solve layout and hierarchy before visual details are added.
Define:
Colors
Typography
Button style
Spacing
Image style
Card style
Icon style
Use the client's existing brand system when available.
If the client does not have one, clarify whether basic brand direction is included in the web design scope.
Design the most important page first.
For many projects this is the homepage or landing page.
Get approval on the overall visual direction before designing every secondary page.
This can reduce expensive revisions later.
Websites need to work across:
Desktop
Laptop
Tablet
Mobile
Do not simply shrink the desktop layout.
Mobile may require:
Different navigation
Stacked content
Shorter sections
Larger touch targets
Different spacing
Simplified interactions
Create reusable design elements such as:
Buttons
Navigation
Cards
Forms
Testimonials
Pricing cards
Footer
Section headers
This improves consistency and makes future changes easier.
If the designer also builds websites, transfer the approved design into:
Webflow
Framer
Wix
WordPress
Another website platform
If a developer handles implementation, provide organized design files and clear specifications.
Before launch, check:
Mobile layouts
Links
Forms
Navigation
Buttons
Images
Typography
Browser behavior
Responsive breakpoints
Basic accessibility
Page content
Also check whether calls to action lead to the correct destination.
After publishing:
Test the live domain
Test forms
Test mobile
Check analytics
Check indexing settings
Confirm SSL
Confirm contact information
A project is not complete simply because the design file looks correct.
CMS
Plugins
E-commerce features
Business email
Explain recurring costs before launch.
Clarify ownership of:
Domain
Website account
Design files
Photos
Fonts
Premium templates
Plugins
Client-owned accounts are usually easier to hand over after the project ends.
Modern website builders and AI tools make simple websites easier to produce.
Competing only on the ability to place text and images on a page can create strong price pressure.
Higher-value differentiation can come from:
Conversion strategy
Strong visual design
Industry specialization
UX
Copy structure
Brand consistency
Responsive quality
Reliable delivery
No.
Many web designers can complete most interface work in Figma.
Image editing tools become useful when projects require significant photo manipulation or custom graphics.
AI tools can accelerate wireframes, copy, page generation, and asset creation.
However, businesses still need decisions about:
Brand
Layout
Messaging
Conversion
User experience
Content hierarchy
Mobile design
Designers who use AI to work faster may be more competitive than designers who compete only on manual production.
Landing pages and simple small-business websites are relatively easy to package because the scope can be clearly defined.
Yes.
A solo designer can expand into:
Web design
Webflow development
Framer development
Branding
Copywriting
SEO
E-commerce
Website maintenance
Conversion optimization
As project volume grows, design, development, copywriting, and project management can be divided among multiple people.
