Video editing is the process of turning raw footage, audio, graphics, and other media into finished videos for creators, businesses, advertisements, social media, education, entertainment, and corporate communication.
Video editors can work as freelancers, contractors, employees, or agency owners. Common services include YouTube editing, short-form content, podcast clips, advertisements, corporate videos, motion graphics, subtitles, and recurring content production.
Item | Details |
|---|---|
Business model | Freelancing, contract work, agency services, recurring retainers |
Typical customers | YouTubers, brands, agencies, podcasters, businesses, creators |
Common deliverables | YouTube videos, Shorts, Reels, TikToks, ads, podcast clips, corporate videos |
Coding required | No |
Core skill | Video editing |
Common software | DaVinci Resolve, Adobe Premiere, Final Cut Pro, CapCut |
Upwork general range | About $10–$60/hour |
Social media clip package | $200–$600/project |
YouTube video project | $500–$1,500/project |
Corporate / brand video | $1,000–$3,000/project |
Ongoing editing retainer | $2,000–$5,000/project |
Free professional software available | Yes |
Difficulty | Beginner to advanced |
Video editing can range from basic cutting to complete post-production.
Common tasks include:
Removing mistakes and pauses
Selecting the best footage
Arranging clips
Adding B-roll
Adding captions
Adding music
Cleaning audio
Adjusting volume
Adding transitions
Adding graphics
Color correction
Color grading
Creating sound effects
Adding motion graphics
Reframing horizontal footage for vertical platforms
Creating different versions for different platforms
Exporting final files
The work required varies significantly by video type.
Editing a 30-second TikTok from organized footage is very different from editing a 20-minute YouTube documentary with hundreds of source files.
Video editors can charge hourly, per project, per finished minute, per batch of videos, or through monthly retainers.
Upwork currently lists video editors at approximately $10–$60 per hour as a general marketplace range.
Its current pricing tiers also show:
Level | Example rate |
|---|---|
Entry level | Below $30/hour |
Mid-tier | $31–$60/hour |
Senior | $61–$150/hour |
Upwork currently lists median examples of approximately:
Entry level: $10/hour
Mid-tier: $40/hour
Senior: $100/hour
These are marketplace hiring benchmarks rather than guaranteed earnings.
Actual income depends on client acquisition, skill, specialization, editing speed, revisions, and how consistently an editor can maintain billable work.
Upwork currently provides several example project ranges.
Project | Example price |
|---|---|
3–5 social media clips | $200–$600 |
10–20 minute YouTube video | $500–$1,500 |
2–5 minute corporate / brand video | $1,000–$3,000 |
60–120 second motion graphics project | $1,500–$5,000 |
8–12 videos/month retainer | $2,000–$5,000 |
These examples include different levels of editing complexity.
A basic social package may involve cuts, text overlays, music, and platform-specific exports.
A YouTube project may additionally include:
B-roll
Intro and outro
Transitions
Captions
Thumbnail work
Corporate and brand work can involve more advanced color, licensed assets, motion graphics, review rounds, and several final exports.
YouTube creators commonly outsource editing once producing videos becomes too time-consuming.
Possible services include:
Talking-head editing
Educational videos
Commentary videos
Documentaries
Gaming videos
Interviews
Podcasts
Faceless YouTube videos
Recurring channels can provide repeat work because new videos are published continuously.
Editors can turn raw recordings or long videos into:
TikTok videos
Instagram Reels
YouTube Shorts
LinkedIn clips
Typical editing may include:
Fast cuts
Captions
Zooms
B-roll
Sound effects
Graphics
Music
Short-form work can be packaged into batches rather than sold one clip at a time.
One long podcast can become several pieces of content.
For example:
One podcast episode → Full edited episode + 5 short clips + captions + social exports
This allows an editor to sell a larger package from the same source footage.
Businesses and advertising agencies need editors for:
Video editing can be started with free professional software, but hardware requirements are more significant than many online service businesses.
Requirement | Example | Starting cost |
|---|---|---|
Computer | Existing capable computer | Already owned |
Editing software | DaVinci Resolve | Free |
Audio monitoring | Existing headphones | Already owned possible |
File transfer | Google Drive or client platform | Free options available |
Storage | Existing SSD / hard drive | Already owned possible |
Portfolio hosting | YouTube, Vimeo, personal site | Free options available |
If the user already owns a capable computer, the software cost can be $0 using DaVinci Resolve.
Unlike many AI API services, video editing may require significant local storage and computing power.
High-resolution footage can quickly consume hundreds of gigabytes, so storage often becomes one of the first additional expenses.
Blackmagic Design currently offers two versions:
Version | Price |
|---|---|
DaVinci Resolve | Free |
DaVinci Resolve Studio 21 | $295 |
The free version supports editing, visual effects, motion graphics, color correction, and audio post-production.
It supports footage up to Ultra HD 3840 × 2160 at up to 60 fps for supported formats.
DaVinci Resolve Studio adds features including additional AI tools, effects, noise reduction, and support for higher-end workflows.
For a beginner, the free version is sufficient to learn professional editing and complete many paid projects.
Adobe currently lists Premiere for individuals at $22.99/month on an annual plan billed monthly in the United States.
The plan includes:
Premiere desktop and mobile
100 GB cloud storage
Adobe Express Premium
Frame.io integration
Adobe also offers Premiere as part of its broader Creative Cloud plans.
Premiere is subscription-based rather than a one-time purchase.
Apple currently sells Final Cut Pro for Mac for $299.99 as a one-time purchase.
It is available only for Mac.
Apple also includes Final Cut Pro in its Creator Studio subscription, currently listed at:
$12.99/month
$129/year
Final Cut Pro can be attractive to Mac-based editors who prefer a one-time purchase rather than a recurring editing-software subscription.
Before editing, clarify:
Final platform
Final video length
Target audience
Style
References
Deadline
Required aspect ratio
Brand assets
Captions
Music
Number of revisions
Do not begin editing without understanding the intended output.
Clients may provide:
Camera footage
Screen recordings
Audio
Images
Logos
Music
Scripts
Brand assets
Organize source files before editing.
A simple folder structure may include:
Footage
Audio
Graphics
Music
Project files
Exports
Poor file management becomes increasingly expensive as projects grow.
First build the basic story.
Focus on:
There is no single required tool stack for video editing.
A practical setup may include:
Primary editor: DaVinci Resolve, Adobe Premiere, Final Cut Pro, or CapCut
Motion graphics: After Effects, Fusion, or Motion
Audio: Built-in editor tools, Audition, or Fairlight
Graphics: Photoshop, Canva, or another graphics editor
Captions: Built-in transcription tools or caption software
File transfer: Google Drive, Dropbox, Frame.io, or similar services
Storage: Internal SSD plus external storage
Backup: External drive or cloud backup
Client review: Frame.io or another review platform
A beginner does not need every tool.
One professional editing application, reliable storage, and a way to exchange files with clients are enough to start.
Useful skills include:
Cutting and pacing
Storytelling
Audio editing
Basic color correction
Captioning
File management
Export settings
Client communication
Basic design
Understanding social media formats
Advanced editors may also learn:
Motion graphics
Animation
Advanced color grading
Sound design
Visual effects
Multicam editing
Speed becomes increasingly important for professional work.
An editor who produces the same quality in half the time can handle more projects without lowering rates.
Do not advertise only:
"I am a video editor."
Choose a specific service.
Examples:
"I edit YouTube videos for business creators."
"I turn podcasts into short-form social clips."
"I edit TikTok and Reels for e-commerce brands."
"I edit talking-head YouTube videos."
"I create short-form clips from long interviews."
A specialized offer makes it easier for clients to understand whether the editor is suitable for their content.
Build several portfolio pieces that match the type of work you want to sell.
If you want YouTube clients, create YouTube-style samples.
If you want short-form clients, create short-form samples.
Do not rely on unrelated cinematic montage work when trying to sell social content editing.
Client provides:
Raw talking-head footage
Brand logo
Style references
Editor provides:
3 finished vertical videos
Basic cuts
Captions
Zooms
Music
Basic sound effects
9:16 exports
Two revision rounds
Optional upgrades:
B-roll sourcing
Motion graphics
Multiple aspect ratios
Thumbnail design
Additional clips
Faster delivery
This is easier to price than offering completely open-ended video editing.
Potential costs include:
Cost | When it applies |
|---|---|
Editing software | Paid editing application |
Computer | If existing hardware cannot edit client footage efficiently |
Storage | Raw footage and project backups |
Cloud transfer | Large client files |
Stock footage | Additional B-roll |
Music | Commercial licensing |
Graphics | Templates and design assets |
Plugins | Specialized effects or workflow tools |
Backup | Protecting client projects |
Storage is an important hidden expense.
A video editor may need to retain:
Raw footage
Proxy files
Cache
Project files
Final exports
Backup copies
A fixed $300 project can become unprofitable if the client requests continuous changes.
Set revision limits and define what counts as a revision.
A completely new creative direction should not automatically be treated as a minor revision.
High-resolution footage can be extremely large.
File transfer, local storage, proxy creation, and backups can add significant time to a project.
Ask about:
Recording resolution
Number of cameras
Hours of footage
before quoting.
A client may initially request "basic editing" and later ask for:
Animation
Extensive B-roll
Advanced sound design
Color grading
Thumbnail design
Multiple social versions
Define deliverables in writing.
Do not use random music, footage, images, or graphics from the internet in commercial client work.
Use:
Client-owned assets
Licensed assets
Properly permitted stock material
Original content
The editor should know which party is responsible for obtaining licenses.
Hardware can fail.
For important client work, maintain backups of project files and essential footage.
Do not rely on one physical drive as the only copy.
A video editor transforms raw footage and audio into a finished video by selecting clips, arranging them, improving audio, adding graphics and captions, correcting color, and preparing the final export.
No.
Clients generally care more about portfolio quality, reliability, communication, and ability to produce the required style.
Yes, if you already own a capable computer.
DaVinci Resolve currently offers a professional free version that can be used to learn editing and complete many paid projects.
DaVinci Resolve is a strong option because it provides a capable free version.
Premiere and Final Cut Pro are also widely used professional tools.
CapCut can be especially convenient for short-form social media editing.
There is no universal rate.
Upwork currently lists a broad range of approximately $10–$60/hour for video editors, while more experienced specialists can charge above that range.
Fixed project pricing depends heavily on footage length, final video length, complexity, and revisions.
Upwork currently gives an example range of approximately $500–$1,500 for a fully edited 10–20 minute YouTube video.
This includes a relatively complete production package and should not be treated as the price of every YouTube edit.
Not necessarily to begin.
However, higher-resolution footage, advanced effects, noise reduction, and large projects require more processing power and storage.
Proxy workflows can help editors work with demanding footage on less powerful computers.
Both can work.
Hourly pricing protects the editor when scope is uncertain.
Fixed project pricing is easier for clients to understand when the deliverables are clearly defined.
Recurring clients can also be moved to monthly retainers.

UGC ads
Product ads
App advertisements
Social ads
Landing-page videos
Creative variations
Advertising clients may need many versions of the same concept for testing.
Businesses hire editors for:
Training videos
Internal communication
Testimonials
Interviews
Events
Product demonstrations
Company presentations
Corporate projects can involve larger budgets but often require more formal approval processes.
Instead of charging separately for every video, an editor can agree to a monthly production volume.
For example:
4 YouTube videos per month
12 short-form videos per month
8 podcast clips per month
Weekly ad creatives
Retainers can make revenue more predictable.
The agreement should clearly define:
Number of videos
Maximum raw footage
Final video length
Revision limits
Turnaround time
Included graphics
Included thumbnails
Source-file delivery
CapCut provides free editing tools and paid Pro features.
CapCut states that current subscription pricing can vary depending on:
Country
Region
Platform
Taxes
Promotional offers
For this reason, the exact current subscription price should be checked on the user's checkout page rather than treated as one universal global price.
CapCut is especially popular for fast social media editing because it combines:
Captions
Templates
Effects
Vertical editing
Social-media-oriented tools
A professional editor may use CapCut for short-form work while using Premiere, Final Cut Pro, or DaVinci Resolve for larger projects.
Removing unusable footage
Selecting strong takes
Removing unnecessary pauses
Arranging the correct order
Establishing pacing
Do not spend excessive time on detailed effects before the main structure works.
Add:
B-roll
Screenshots
Product footage
Graphics
Zooms
Images
Screen recordings
Supporting visuals help maintain attention and explain information that is difficult to communicate through talking-head footage alone.
Improve:
Dialogue volume
Background noise
Music level
Sound effects
Transitions between audio clips
Bad audio can make professionally shot video feel low quality.
Dialogue should remain understandable across phones, headphones, and speakers.
Depending on the project, add:
Subtitles
Titles
Lower thirds
Names
Callouts
Charts
Product information
Calls to action
Short-form social videos frequently use prominent captions because viewers may watch without sound.
Correct obvious differences in:
Exposure
White balance
Contrast
Saturation
More advanced projects may also require creative color grading.
Basic color correction and cinematic grading are not the same service.
Do not immediately treat the first export as final.
Send a review version and collect client feedback.
Whenever possible, ask the client to provide consolidated feedback rather than sending dozens of individual messages over several days.
Define revision limits in advance.
For example:
2 revision rounds included
Additional revisions billed separately
Unlimited revisions can make a fixed-price project unprofitable.
Confirm:
Resolution
Frame rate
Codec
Aspect ratio
File type
Captions
Platform requirements
Typical outputs may include:
16:9 YouTube version
9:16 Shorts / Reels version
1:1 social version
Some clients may also require project files.
Whether project files are included should be agreed before the project begins.
Agree with the client on how long raw footage and project files will be retained after delivery.
Slow decoding, rendering, exporting, or proxy generation reduces the number of projects an editor can complete.
Hardware upgrades can eventually be justified by time savings, but beginners do not need to purchase high-end equipment before learning the skill.
Video editing marketplaces contain many low-priced services.
Upwork's video-editing marketplace currently includes individual offers starting below $30.
Competing only on basic cutting can therefore create strong price pressure.
Editors can differentiate through:
Specialization
Faster turnaround
Storytelling
Channel-specific expertise
Motion graphics
Advertising knowledge
Reliable recurring service
Consistent brand style
AI is increasingly automating tasks such as transcription, captioning, silence removal, reframing, masking, and search.
However, clients still need decisions about storytelling, pacing, creative direction, branding, advertising strategy, and final quality.
Editors who use automation to work faster may have an advantage over editors who treat AI only as competition.
Simple talking-head and short-form social editing usually require fewer advanced post-production skills than complex motion graphics, documentaries, or cinematic commercial projects.
Yes.
A solo editor can expand into:
YouTube editing
Short-form content
Podcast repurposing
Advertising editing
Motion graphics
Thumbnail design
Content management
As client volume increases, editing can be delegated to additional editors while the agency manages quality, client communication, and delivery.
