Substack is a publishing platform for writers, journalists, podcasters, and other creators who want to build an audience and monetize it through subscriptions.
The platform combines a website, email newsletter system, subscriber management, payment processing, podcasts, video, community features, and its own discovery network. Publishing is free, and Substack primarily makes money by taking a percentage of paid subscription revenue.
For creators, the main tradeoff is simplicity versus long-term cost. Substack makes it possible to launch a paid publication with very little technical setup, but its 10% platform fee becomes significant as subscription revenue grows.

Substack does not charge creators based on the size of a free subscriber list. The 10% platform fee starts when a creator accepts paid subscriptions.
A creator can start a publication, publish posts on a Substack-hosted website, and send those posts directly to subscribers by email.
A publication can remain completely free or combine free and paid content.
A typical structure is:
Publish free articles to attract readers.
Collect email subscribers.
Build a regular publishing schedule.
Enable paid subscriptions.
Reserve some posts, sections, podcasts, videos, or community access for paying subscribers.
Use free content to continue attracting new readers.
Convert part of the free audience into paid subscribers.
Substack also operates its own content network. Creators and readers can follow accounts, publish short-form Notes, recommend other publications, and discover content through the Substack Home feed.
This makes Substack different from a traditional standalone email service: some subscriber acquisition can happen inside the platform itself rather than entirely through Google, social media, or an existing audience.
Starting and running a free Substack publication does not require a monthly subscription.
Once paid subscriptions are enabled, Substack charges 10% of each paid transaction. Stripe payment-processing and recurring billing fees are charged separately.
Cost | Amount |
|---|---|
Free publication | $0 |
Substack paid subscription fee | 10% of transaction |
Stripe processing | Additional |
Custom domain | $50 one-time |
Domain registration | Paid separately to domain registrar |
For USD-based Stripe accounts, Substack currently requires paid plans to be at least $5 per month or $30 per year. Creators can also offer a higher-priced Founding Member plan.
Substack's custom-domain feature costs a one-time $50 fee. The creator must separately own and maintain the domain through a domain registrar.
Suppose a publication charges:
$10/month
500 paying subscribers
Gross recurring subscription revenue would be approximately:
500 × $10 = $5,000/month
Substack's 10% platform share would be:
$500/month
The creator would then also pay applicable Stripe processing and billing fees.
This illustrates an important characteristic of Substack's pricing model: starting costs are extremely low, but platform costs increase directly with subscription revenue.
Creators enable paid subscriptions by connecting a Stripe account and setting monthly, annual, and optional Founding Member prices.
Substack does not currently allow a publication to offer only an annual paid plan; the standard paid setup includes monthly and yearly pricing.
Content can then be divided between:
Public content
Free subscriber content
Paid subscriber content
Free previews of paid content
This supports a common freemium newsletter model where most readers subscribe for free while a smaller portion pays for deeper analysis, exclusive articles, premium podcasts, community access, or other specialized content.
Paid subscriptions are primarily processed through Stripe.
Creators connect a Stripe account to Substack, and subscription payments can then be paid out to the creator's linked bank account.
Web subscription payments generally reach the creator's bank account according to Stripe's payout schedule. Substack notes that the first payout for a new Stripe account can take longer than subsequent payouts.
Readers may also have access to alternative payment methods or localized currencies depending on their country and the creator's Stripe configuration.
Additional currency conversion or payment-method fees can apply.
Creators planning to use paid subscriptions should also verify that Stripe and Substack payments are supported in their country.
Substack also supports in-app paid subscriptions on Apple devices.
When a subscription is purchased through Apple's in-app payment system, Apple's service fee can apply in addition to Substack's fee, reducing the creator's take-home revenue compared with a normal web subscription.
For this reason, creators should understand the difference between subscriptions purchased through the web and those purchased through an app store.
One of Substack's main advantages over a conventional email newsletter service is its built-in creator and reader network.
Creators can recommend other Substack publications to their readers.
These recommendations can expose publications to audiences that already subscribe to similar creators.
Substack describes creator recommendations as one of the platform's primary growth mechanisms.
Notes are short-form public posts that function somewhat like a social feed.
Creators can post:
Short text updates
Links
Images
Quotes
Replies
Restacks of other Substack content
Notes can appear to subscribers, followers, and people elsewhere in the Substack network, giving creators another way to gain exposure without sending a full newsletter.
Users can follow creators without becoming email subscribers.
Following creates a lower-commitment relationship in which users can see a creator's Notes and activity before eventually deciding whether to subscribe.
Substack is no longer limited to written newsletters.
Creators can publish podcasts and distribute episodes through an RSS feed to major podcast platforms. Podcast hosting itself does not have a monthly hosting charge; paid subscriptions remain subject to Substack's normal subscription fee structure.
Substack also supports native video posts.
Video tools include features such as:
Direct recording
Video uploads
Automatic transcripts
Paid video content
Free previews
Audio distribution through a podcast feed
Clips for Notes or social media
This allows a publication to operate more like a broader creator membership business rather than only an email newsletter.
Creators can export subscriber information from Substack as a CSV file.
The export can include information such as subscription dates, plan information, email engagement, and post-view data depending on the selected export fields. Substack currently notes that subscriber full names cannot be included in this export.
Substack also supports importing mailing lists from platforms such as Mailchimp, Ghost, and Beehiiv, provided subscribers previously opted in to receiving email.
This portability is important because an email subscriber list can remain a business asset even if the creator later changes publishing platforms.
A practical Substack business can be built in stages.
A publication needs a clear reason for someone to subscribe.
Examples include:
Industry analysis
Investment research
Local reporting
Technology commentary
Professional education
Specialized tutorials
Culture or entertainment analysis
A focused topic also makes recommendations and word-of-mouth growth easier because readers can quickly understand what the publication offers.
Launching immediately behind a full paywall can make audience growth difficult unless the creator already has a strong following.
Free posts allow readers to evaluate the publication before paying.
Traffic can come from:
Search engines
X
YouTube
Podcasts
Communities
Existing audiences
Substack Notes
Creator recommendations
The email list is generally more important than raw website traffic because subscribers can be reached repeatedly.
Paid content should offer a clear additional benefit.
Possible paid products include:
Premium articles

Substack is particularly attractive when:
You want to launch without upfront software costs.
Paid subscriptions are the primary business model.
You do not want to configure several separate newsletter and payment tools.
You want access to Substack's internal discovery network.
You value simple publishing over extensive website customization.
You want to test whether an audience will pay before investing in a larger technology stack.
It can also be useful for an established writer or creator who already has an audience and wants a simple way to introduce recurring memberships.
The biggest economic disadvantage is the revenue-based platform fee.
A fixed software fee may cost more when a newsletter is small, but Substack's 10% fee grows continuously with subscription revenue.
Large publications should periodically compare the cost of Substack against alternatives.
Substack provides discovery features, but creating a publication does not guarantee distribution.
Most creators still need a consistent acquisition strategy and content that readers actively want to recommend.
A business hosted entirely on Substack depends on Substack's product decisions, policies, discovery systems, and payment integrations.
Exporting the subscriber list reduces this risk, but creators should still maintain backups of important audience and content data.
The advertised subscription price is gross revenue.
Substack's fee, Stripe fees, currency conversion charges where applicable, refunds, and app-store fees can all reduce the amount ultimately received.
Substack requires imported subscribers to have opted in to receive communications.
Lists that appear likely to contain non-consenting recipients can be reviewed or restricted because poor-quality imports can create spam complaints and deliverability problems.
Substack's strongest advantage is reducing setup complexity.
A self-managed publication might require separate systems for:
Website hosting
Email delivery
Subscriber management
Payments
Analytics
Podcast hosting
Community
Discovery
Substack combines most of these into one platform.
The tradeoff is less control and a recurring percentage of paid subscription revenue.
For a new creator testing a newsletter idea, this can be a favorable trade. Once subscription revenue becomes substantial, the economics of the 10% platform fee deserve closer examination.

Simply placing ordinary posts behind a paywall does not automatically create a strong paid subscription business.
Substack provides subscriber, traffic, growth, engagement, and revenue metrics.
Creators can use these to identify which posts and acquisition channels generate subscribers and revenue.
For a paid newsletter, subscriber retention can matter as much as acquisition because recurring revenue disappears when paying readers cancel.
