Online tutoring is a service business where tutors teach students remotely through video calls, virtual classrooms, shared documents, digital whiteboards, or specialized tutoring platforms. Common subjects include languages, mathematics, science, programming, test preparation, school subjects, and professional skills.
Unlike an online course, tutoring usually involves live interaction between the tutor and student. This allows personalized explanations and feedback but also makes revenue closely tied to teaching time unless the business expands into group classes, packages, courses, or additional tutors.
Item | Details |
|---|---|
Main revenue | Hourly tutoring fees |
Other revenue | Lesson packages, group classes, subscriptions, courses |
Startup cost | Very low |
Inventory required | None |
Main equipment | Computer, microphone, webcam, stable internet |
Common subjects | Languages, math, science, coding, test preparation |
Delivery | Video calls or tutoring platforms |
Main pricing model | Hourly |
Common platforms | Preply, Wyzant, Tutor.com |
Main constraint | Tutor's available teaching hours |
Scaling options | Higher rates, groups, courses, hiring tutors |
Main risk | Platform fees and limited hourly capacity |
A basic online tutoring workflow is:
Choose subject → Create tutor profile or find students → Schedule lesson → Teach → Receive payment → Retain student → Repeat
For example:
Student needs Python help
→ Finds programming tutor
→ Books one-hour lesson
→ Tutor explains problem
→ Student schedules weekly lessons
Recurring students are especially valuable because acquiring a new student usually requires more work than retaining an existing one.
Tutoring usually teaches a specific body of knowledge or skill.
Examples:
English grammar
Calculus
Chemistry
Python
SAT preparation
Coaching generally focuses more on helping a client apply knowledge and achieve a broader personal or professional outcome.
For example:
Python tutor
teaches programming concepts.
Software career coach
helps a developer plan job applications, interviews, positioning, and career decisions.
The two models can overlap, but the primary service is different.
Online tutoring:
Tutor + Student → Live lesson → Personalized explanation
Recorded curriculum → Many students → Self-paced learning
Tutoring provides greater personalization.
Courses provide greater scalability.
A tutor can eventually combine both models.
For example:
Recorded fundamentals course
→ Weekly group tutoring
→ Premium one-to-one tutoring
The best subject usually combines:
Existing expertise
Student demand
Ability to demonstrate competence
Customers willing to pay
Common categories include:
Examples:
English
Spanish
French
Korean
Japanese
Language tutoring has a large international market because lessons can be delivered entirely online.
Examples:
Mathematics
Physics
Chemistry
Biology
Economics
Demand can be influenced by:
School calendars
Exams
University admissions
Possible subjects include:
Python
JavaScript
C++
SQL
Data analysis
Programming tutoring can target:
Students
Career changers
Professionals
Online tutoring can be started with very little equipment.
Item | Typical Need |
|---|---|
Computer | Required |
Internet | Required |
Webcam | Usually required |
Microphone | Required |
Video platform | Free or paid |
Digital whiteboard | Optional |
Scheduling | Free or paid |
Website | Optional initially |
Tutor marketplace | Usually commission-based |
Advertising | Optional |
A tutor does not necessarily need:
Office
Inventory
Employees
Custom software
The largest early investment is usually time spent finding students and preparing lessons.
Tutors commonly charge hourly.
Example:
$30/hour
If the tutor teaches:
20 hours/week
weekly gross revenue:
20 × $30 = $600
At approximately four weeks:
$2,400/month
before:
Platform fees
Taxes
Preparation
Cancellations
Administrative time
The advertised hourly rate is therefore not the same as effective hourly income.
Suppose:
Lesson = 1 hour
Preparation = 20 minutes
Student communication = 10 minutes
Total work:
1.5 hours
Lesson price:
$45
Effective gross rate:
$45 ÷ 1.5
= $30/hour
before platform fees and taxes.
Preparation requirements should therefore be considered when setting rates.
Preply is an international tutoring marketplace focused heavily on language learning.
Tutors can create profiles without an upfront listing fee.
Current tutor commissions work differently for trial and recurring lessons.
Preply currently takes:
100% commission
on the first trial lesson with each new student.
The tutor therefore does not receive normal lesson earnings from that trial.
The tradeoff is that the platform uses trial lessons as part of its student-acquisition system.
After the trial lesson, tutor commission currently starts at:
33%
and declines as the tutor completes more teaching hours on Preply.
The minimum commission currently reaches:
18%
for experienced tutors.
For example:
Tutor rate = $30/hour
At 33% commission:
Tutor receives approximately:
$20.10
before any applicable taxes or withdrawal costs.
At 18%:
Tutor receives approximately:
$24.60
Preply therefore becomes economically more attractive as tutors accumulate teaching hours and retain students.
Wyzant is a U.S.-focused tutoring marketplace covering academic and professional subjects.
Tutors set their own hourly rates.
Wyzant currently retains:
25% of the tutor's posted hourly rate
meaning the tutor generally receives:
75%
before applicable taxes.
Example:
Tutor rate:
$60/hour
Tutor receives:
$60 × 75%
= $45
Wyzant also currently charges students a:
9% service fee
on lesson cost.
Tutors who directly refer a new student to Wyzant can receive 100% of their tutor rate for lessons with that referred student, although the student's service fee still applies.
Tutor.com operates differently from open marketplaces such as Preply and Wyzant.
Tutors apply to join the platform and must satisfy eligibility requirements.
Current requirements include:
U.S. residence
U.S. work eligibility
Valid Social Security Number
At least five available tutoring hours per week
Subject expertise
English fluency
Applicants generally need to be:
College sophomores or above pursuing a four-year degree
or:
Hold a four-year degree or higher
This makes Tutor.com less globally accessible than marketplaces such as Preply.
Instead of:
I teach math
try:
High-school calculus tutoring
or:
Python tutoring for university beginners
Clear positioning makes it easier for students to understand whether you are relevant.
Possible acquisition channels include:
Preply
Wyzant
Tutoring companies
Social media
Local communities
Referrals
Direct website
Educational content
Platforms provide existing demand but take fees.
Independent acquisition gives more control but requires marketing.
A strong profile should explain:
Subject
Student type
Experience
Teaching style
Availability
Rate
Avoid vague claims such as:
"I can teach anyone anything."
The first lesson should establish:
Student's current level
Goal
Difficulties
Learning plan
This makes future lessons easier to structure.
Student books trial → Assess speaking level → Define goals → Weekly conversation lessons → Homework → Progress review
A language tutor can specialize in areas such as:
Conversation
Business language
Interviews
Exam preparation
Specialization can support higher rates than generic conversation practice.
Student brings problem → Tutor identifies knowledge gap → Explain concept → Practice problems → Homework → Review
The goal should be understanding rather than simply completing the student's assignments for them.
Student shares code → Tutor identifies issue → Explain concept → Student implements solution → Review
Good tutoring teaches students how to solve similar problems themselves.
Doing the student's coursework or coding assignment for them can violate educational policies and undermine the service.
Platforms reduce the need to build an audience from zero.
Advantages:
Existing student demand
Reviews
Scheduling
Payments
Search visibility
Disadvantages:
Commission
Competition
Platform dependence
Less customer ownership
A marketplace can be particularly useful for obtaining the first students.
Tutoring often benefits strongly from referrals.
Student improves
→ Parent/student recommends tutor
→ New student
This can reduce customer acquisition costs over time.
Tutors can publish:
YouTube tutorials
Short lessons
Blog posts
Study tips
For example:
YouTube Python lesson
→ Student wants personalized help
→ Tutoring inquiry
This creates a connection between YouTube and the tutoring service.
Even online tutors can acquire students through:
Schools
Universities
Parent communities
Professional groups
Finding a completely new student every hour creates constant marketing work.
A student who books:
2 lessons/week
× 20 weeks
creates:
40 lessons
from one acquisition.
Retention can be more important than continuously acquiring new students.
Record:
Starting level → Goal → Lessons → Progress
For example:
IELTS speaking:
6.0 → Target 7.0
This makes lessons more structured and helps students understand progress.
Do not guarantee test scores that depend on factors outside your control.
If several students need the same concept, create reusable:
Exercises
Slides
Examples
Worksheets
This reduces preparation time.
Last-minute cancellations create lost capacity.
Define:
Required notice
Rescheduling rules
No-show policy
Marketplace rules may limit how these policies can be applied.
For example, Wyzant currently allows tutors to define cancellation policies, subject to its platform requirements.
A tutor can increase pricing as:
Reviews improve
Demand increases
Expertise grows
Schedule becomes full
Suppose a tutor charges:
$50/hour
and teaches:
25 hours/week
Approximate four-week gross revenue:
25 × $50 × 4
= $5,000/month
If platform fees average 20%:
$5,000 × 20%
= $1,000
remaining:
$4,000
before:
Taxes
Preparation
Cancellations
Software
Administration
If another 40 hours per month are spent on unpaid preparation and administration:
Teaching:
100 hours
Other work:
40 hours
Total:
140 hours
Effective gross income after platform fees:
$4,000 ÷ 140
= approximately $28.57/hour
This illustrates why platform commission and unpaid work matter.
Tutoring has a natural time constraint.
Several approaches can improve economics.
For example:
$30/hour → $50/hour
This is the simplest method but depends on market demand.
Example:
10 lessons for:
$450
rather than:
$50 × 10 = $500
The student receives a discount while the tutor secures more predictable bookings.
Check platform rules before offering alternative payment structures to marketplace students.
Instead of:
1 student × $50 = $50/hour
a tutor could teach:
5 students × $25
= $125/hour
The tradeoff is reduced personalization.
Repeated teaching can reveal which explanations students need most often.
Those lessons can eventually become an Online Course Business.
For example:
Live Python tutoring
→ Identify repeated beginner problems
→ Create beginner course
→ Sell course
→ Offer premium tutoring
A tutoring business can eventually become an agency or online school.
Founder finds students
→ Additional tutors teach
→ Business retains margin
For example:
Student pays:
$60/hour
Tutor receives:
$40/hour
Business gross difference:
$20/hour
before administrative and acquisition costs.
This changes the business from:
self-employed tutor
Advantages:
Existing traffic
Payment infrastructure
Reviews
Scheduling tools
Disadvantages:
Commission
Platform rules
Competition
Advantages:
More control over rates
Direct customer relationship
No marketplace commission
Disadvantages:
Must acquire students
Must manage payments
Must manage scheduling
Must establish trust independently
A common path is:
Marketplace → Build experience → Referrals and independent acquisition → Higher-value tutoring business
Always follow the marketplace's rules regarding off-platform relationships and payments.
Tutoring can evolve into several related models.
A tutor teaching a skill can eventually provide broader outcome-oriented guidance.
Example:
English tutor
→ Interview communication coach
Repeated lessons can become standardized educational products.
One-to-many teaching improves revenue per hour.
Recruit tutors and manage student acquisition centrally.
These models can reduce dependence on one person's available teaching hours.
One hour of tutoring usually requires approximately one hour of tutor availability.
This creates a natural income ceiling.
Preply currently takes the full value of new-student trial lessons and 18%–33% of subsequent lessons.
Wyzant currently retains 25% of the tutor's posted rate.
Compare platform acquisition value with commission cost.
A cancelled hour may be difficult to replace at short notice.
Clear policies and recurring schedules can reduce this risk.
Highly customized lessons can require substantial unpaid preparation.
Track total working time.
Very low introductory rates may attract students primarily motivated by price.
Increase pricing carefully as reviews, specialization, and demand improve.
Subject expertise alone does not guarantee effective tutoring.
A tutor needs to:
Explain clearly
Diagnose confusion
Adjust difficulty
Communicate patiently
A tutor relying on one marketplace is exposed to changes in:
Search ranking
Commission
Account policies
Student demand
Developing referrals or additional acquisition channels reduces this dependency.
Model | Best Fit | Main Difference |
|---|---|---|
Online Tutoring | Personalized subject instruction | Live one-to-one teaching |
Coaching Business | Personalized outcome guidance | Broader goals and accountability |
Online Course Business | Repeatable structured education | Higher scalability |
Freelancing | Performing work for clients | Execution rather than teaching |
Education Agency | Managing multiple tutors | Team-based service |
Choose online tutoring when:
You have teachable subject expertise
Students need personalized explanation
You prefer direct interaction
You can charge enough to justify your time
Choose Coaching Business when clients primarily need personalized guidance toward a broader outcome rather than subject instruction.
Choose an Online Course Business when the same educational material can be delivered repeatedly without substantial one-to-one interaction.
Startup costs can be very low.
A computer, webcam, microphone, stable internet connection, and video platform can be enough to begin.
Platforms may charge commissions after students book lessons.
There is no universal rate.
Pricing depends on subject, experience, geography, specialization, qualifications, platform, and student demand.
Tutors generally set their own rates on marketplaces such as Preply and Wyzant.
Preply currently takes 100% commission on each new student's trial lesson.
Subsequent lesson commission starts at 33% and declines to as low as 18% as the tutor accumulates teaching hours.
Wyzant currently retains 25% of a tutor's posted hourly rate, meaning the tutor generally receives 75% before applicable taxes.
Students also currently pay a separate 9% service fee.
No.
Tutoring normally teaches a specific subject or skill.
Coaching more often provides personalized guidance, accountability, and decision support toward a broader outcome.
Yes, but standard one-to-one tutoring is time-limited.
Tutors can increase scalability through group classes, courses, lesson materials, additional tutors, or an education business.
Examples include:
SAT
ACT
GRE
GMAT
IELTS
TOEFL
Test preparation can support higher pricing when the exam has significant educational or professional value.
Recurring students improve business stability.
For example:
Tuesday 6 PM every week
is operationally easier than constantly finding new students for individual sessions.
The lessons themselves can still be delivered remotely.
If students fill nearly every available tutoring hour, higher rates may be more useful than simply adding more hours.
A $30 lesson that requires two hours of custom preparation may have poor economics.
Develop reusable frameworks where appropriate.
