Google AdSense is Google's advertising program for website publishers.
It allows eligible publishers to place ads on websites and earn money when advertisements are displayed to visitors.
AdSense is commonly used by:
Blogs
News websites
Content websites
Forums
Niche information sites
Online tools
Educational websites
Unlike affiliate marketing, the visitor usually does not need to purchase a product for the publisher to earn revenue.
Item | Details |
|---|---|
Business model | Display advertising |
Joining fee | $0 |
Main monetization | Advertising impressions |
Publisher pricing model | Primarily eCPM |
U.S. payment threshold | $100 |
U.S. verification threshold | $10 |
Ad placement | Auto ads or manual ad units |
Minimum traffic requirement | No publicly stated universal minimum |
Minimum age | 18 |
Main requirement | Original, policy-compliant content |
Main revenue driver | Traffic × visitor value × ad demand |
Difficulty | Beginner to intermediate |
Main risk | Policy violations and low-value traffic |
The basic model is:
Website content → Visitor loads page → Ad is served → Advertiser pays → Publisher receives a share
Advertisers compete to show ads through Google's advertising systems.
AdSense matches ads with eligible publisher inventory and pays publishers based on advertiser bids and eligible ad impressions.
Publishers do not normally negotiate directly with individual advertisers.
AdSense for Content primarily pays publishers using an effective cost per thousand impressions model:
eCPM
This represents estimated earnings for every 1,000 eligible ad impressions.
A simple estimate is:
Monthly pageviews ÷ 1,000 × Page RPM
For example:
100,000 pageviews
with a $5 Page RPM
would produce approximately:
$500
This is only an example.
Actual revenue varies significantly.
Google currently separates the publisher revenue share from the fee charged by the advertiser-buying platform.
For AdSense for Content, publishers receive:
80% of revenue after the advertiser platform takes its fee
When advertisers purchase ads through Google Ads, Google says publishers retain approximately:
68% of advertiser spending
The exact economics can differ when third-party advertiser platforms are involved.
Google does not publish one universal revenue share for every AdSense product.
RPM means:
Revenue per thousand impressions
It is one of the most useful metrics for measuring AdSense performance.
A common calculation is:
Estimated earnings ÷ Pageviews × 1,000
Example:
$250 earnings
50,000 pageviews
$250 ÷ 50,000 × 1,000 =
$5 Page RPM
RPM allows publishers to compare monetization performance even when traffic levels differ.
There is no standard AdSense RPM that every website receives.
Revenue can vary based on:
Visitor country
Topic
Advertiser demand
Device
Season
Ad format
Page layout
User engagement
Traffic quality
Number of eligible ad impressions
For example, advertisers may pay significantly more for commercial topics such as:
Finance
Insurance
Software
Business services
than for topics with lower commercial intent.
However, a higher-value niche does not guarantee higher total revenue.
Traffic volume still matters.
AdSense historically was often discussed in terms of CPC:
Cost per click
Google has since moved AdSense for Content toward publisher payments based primarily on impressions rather than clicks.
This means publishers should not think of AdSense simply as:
Visitor clicks ad → Publisher gets paid
The modern model is better understood as:
Eligible ad inventory + advertiser bidding + impressions → Publisher revenue
Clicks may still influence advertiser value and campaign economics, but publisher earnings are not based solely on clicks.
Google currently states that publishers can apply if they:
Are at least 18 years old
Have their own content
Have access to the site's HTML source code
Comply with AdSense Program policies
Publish original and useful content
Google does not publish a universal requirement such as:
10,000 monthly visitors
50 articles
Six-month-old domain
for standard AdSense eligibility.
Approval is based on the site and compliance rather than one public traffic threshold.
A site should provide useful content that exists independently of the advertisements.
Examples can include:
Guides
Tutorials
Research
Reviews
Reference material
News
Tools
Community content
A site composed mainly of copied, automatically generated, or extremely thin pages can struggle with both AdSense approval and search visibility.
Publishers need sufficient control over the website to place AdSense code.
For an independently hosted website, this normally means access to:
HTML
Site templates
CMS settings
Application code
Some hosted platforms provide their own AdSense integrations.
Creating an AdSense account does not automatically mean a site is approved to display ads.
The general process is:
Create an AdSense account
Add the website
Connect the site to AdSense
Google reviews the site
Site is approved or rejected
Ads can begin serving
Approval times vary.
There is no guaranteed approval timeline.
Potential problems include:
Very little original content
Inaccessible pages
Policy violations
Poor navigation
Copied content
Pages designed primarily to display ads
Misleading interfaces
Unsupported content
A website should be useful before advertisements are added.
Auto ads allow Google to automatically determine where advertisements should appear.
The publisher places AdSense code on the site.
Google then analyzes factors including:
Page structure
Existing advertisements
Content
Available space
and automatically inserts eligible advertisements.
Auto ads can adapt when new pages or layout changes appear.
Available formats can include:
In-page ads
Anchor ads
Side rail ads
Vignette ads
Intent-driven formats
Available formats and settings can change over time.
Publishers can control which formats are enabled and can exclude certain:
Pages
Page areas
from Auto ads.
Publishers can also manually decide where advertisements appear.
Common placements might include:
Inside articles
Between sections
Sidebar
Header
Footer
Manual placement gives the publisher more design control.
The tradeoff is additional testing and maintenance.
Approach | Main advantage | Main disadvantage |
|---|---|---|
Auto ads | Fast setup and automation | Less precise layout control |
Manual ad units | Greater control | More setup and optimization |
Hybrid | Combines automation and control | More complex |
For many new publishers, Auto ads are the simplest starting point.
Traffic volume has a direct effect on the number of monetizable impressions.
Example:
10,000 pageviews at $5 RPM:
$50
100,000 pageviews at $5 RPM:
$500
1,000,000 pageviews at $5 RPM:
$5,000
However, multiplying traffic by a fixed RPM is only an illustration.
RPM can change substantially as traffic sources and visitor locations change.
Visitor location can have a major effect on advertising value.
Advertisers in countries with larger advertising markets may bid more for certain audiences.
A website with traffic primarily from:
United States
Canada
United Kingdom
Australia
may have different economics from a site receiving traffic from lower-ad-spend markets.
This does not mean one geographic market is always more profitable.
Topic and advertiser demand also matter.
Some content is closer to commercial decisions.
Examples:
Business software
Credit products
Insurance
Hosting
Professional services
Advertisers may compete aggressively for these audiences.
Other content may attract large traffic but weaker advertiser demand.
For AdSense, the ideal topic often combines:
Traffic demand + advertiser demand
One pageview can produce multiple ad impressions.
For example, a page may contain:
One in-article ad
One anchor ad
One sidebar ad
However, more ads do not automatically mean more revenue.
Too many ads can:
Reduce readability
Slow the site
Damage user experience
Increase accidental clicks
Violate publisher policies
Google specifically advises publishers not to show more advertising than content on a page.
Good ad placement attempts to balance:
Revenue
Visibility
User experience
Page speed
Content readability
Ads should not be placed in ways that intentionally confuse users.
For example, an ad should not appear to be:
A navigation button
A download button
Part of an image gallery
An editorial recommendation
Misleading implementation can violate AdSense policies.
For accounts using U.S. dollars, Google's current payment threshold is:
$100
Once finalized earnings reach the threshold, Google can issue payment if:
Payment information is complete
There are no account holds
The account remains compliant
Different currencies have different thresholds.
For USD accounts, the current verification threshold is:
$10
When earnings reach the threshold, Google can require publishers to verify:
Identity
Address
The payment method selection threshold for USD accounts is also currently $10.
AdSense generally pays on a monthly cycle once:
Earnings are finalized
Payment threshold is reached
Verification is complete
No payment hold exists
If the threshold has not been reached, the balance carries forward.
The AdSense account itself is free.
The meaningful costs are related to producing and operating the website.
Cost | Typical requirement |
|---|---|
AdSense account | $0 |
Domain | Required for many independent sites |
Hosting | Depends on website |
Content production | Time or outsourcing |
Analytics | Optional |
SEO tools | Optional |
AdSense is therefore inexpensive to add to an existing website.
The expensive part is usually:
Building traffic
Create a useful site around a clear subject.
Examples:
Business
Technology
Hobbies
Education
Travel
Finance
Entertainment
Build enough content that visitors can genuinely use the site without advertisements.
Focus on:
Useful information
Clear navigation
Search intent
Internal links
Mobile readability
A site does not need massive traffic before applying.
However, traffic helps demonstrate that the site has an audience and makes monetization meaningful.
Potential sources include:
Google Search
Bing
Social media
Communities
Direct visitors
Email newsletters
Create an account and submit the website for review.
Make sure important pages work correctly.
These often include:
Homepage
Content pages
About page
Search traffic is a common acquisition source for AdSense publishers.
A useful content site can receive recurring search traffic from:
Informational queries
How-to searches
Reference searches
Comparison queries
However, publishers should not create low-value pages solely to generate search traffic and ad impressions.
Google explicitly requires compliance with its publisher policies and Search spam policies.
Invalid traffic is one of the largest AdSense risks.
Publishers should never:
Click their own advertisements
Ask friends to click advertisements
Pay users to click advertisements
Use click-exchange networks
Artificially generate impressions
Use automated traffic systems to inflate ad activity
Google can:
Remove earnings
Limit ad serving
Suspend accounts
Disable accounts
because of invalid activity.
Google specifically warns against traffic-exchange services.
Examples include:
Paid-to-click
Paid-to-surf
Auto-surf
Click exchanges
These systems can create invalid impressions or clicks and can result in account closure.
Publishers are responsible not only for content they personally create but also for content appearing on monetized pages.
This can include:
Comments
Forum posts
User profiles
Uploaded content
External links
Google's publisher policies apply to content presented alongside AdSense advertising.
Advertising websites can have additional privacy obligations.
Depending on visitor location and advertising configuration, publishers may need to manage:
Cookie disclosures
Consent
Personalized advertising choices
Regional privacy regulations
For example, European users may require consent handling compatible with Google's advertising requirements.
Publishers should review current Google privacy and messaging requirements before monetizing international traffic.
Publishers do not need to:
Find advertisers
Negotiate contracts
Invoice advertisers
Build an advertising system
Google manages the marketplace.
AdSense can monetize visitors who are not directly purchasing products.
This makes it suitable for informational websites where affiliate marketing may not fit every page.
A large content library can produce a large number of monetizable ad impressions.
Auto ads reduce the technical effort required to manage advertisements.
A site with only a few thousand monthly pageviews may generate very little AdSense income.
AdSense becomes more meaningful as traffic scales.
Revenue changes due to:
Advertiser demand
Seasonality
Visitor geography
Economic conditions
Topic mix
Ad formats
Revenue is therefore not perfectly predictable.
Excessive advertising can:
Distract readers
Increase layout shifts
Slow pages
Reduce trust
Maximizing ads per page is not automatically the best strategy.
Google can restrict or disable advertising when a site violates publisher policies.
A publisher dependent entirely on AdSense carries platform risk.
Even traffic that appears to increase revenue can become harmful if Google determines it is invalid.
A publisher earning $5 RPM would need approximately:
200,000 monthly pageviews
to generate:
$1,000/month
This example demonstrates why traffic acquisition is usually the hardest part of an AdSense business.
Factor | Google AdSense | Affiliate Marketing |
|---|---|---|
Revenue trigger | Primarily ad impressions | Qualifying purchase/action |
Purchase required | No | Usually yes |
Revenue per visitor | Often lower | Can be much higher |
Commercial intent required | Lower | Higher |
Best content | Broad informational traffic | Product/buyer-intent content |
Traffic scale importance | Very high | High |
Merchant dependency | Google advertising ecosystem | Individual affiliate programs |
Many publishers use both.
For example:
Informational article → AdSense
Product comparison → Affiliate links
Google AdSense is an advertising program that allows eligible website publishers to display ads and receive a share of advertising revenue.
Yes.
There is no fee to create an AdSense account.
There is no fixed amount.
Revenue depends on factors such as:
Traffic
Visitor geography
Topic
Advertising demand
Ad impressions
Page layout
RPM is more useful than asking for one universal payment rate.
Modern AdSense for Content publisher revenue is primarily based on impressions using eCPM.
It should no longer be treated simply as a pay-per-click program.
For AdSense for Content, Google currently says publishers receive 80% of revenue after the advertiser platform takes its fee.
When Google Ads purchases the inventory, publisher revenue is approximately 68% of advertiser spending.
Google does not publish a universal minimum traffic requirement for standard AdSense approval.
The site still needs original, useful, compliant content.
For accounts reporting in U.S. dollars, the payment threshold is currently $100.
No.
Publishers must not click their own advertisements or encourage other users to click them.
Generally, AdSense and affiliate links can coexist on the same website provided the site complies with applicable policies.
The page should still provide substantial original value rather than exist mainly to display advertising.

Better layouts
Appropriate ad placement
Faster pages
More useful content
Better internal linking
For most small publishers, traffic growth has greater upside than repeatedly adjusting tiny ad-placement details.
Google's publisher and Search policies focus on content quality, compliance, user value, and spam behavior rather than granting automatic approval based on how content was created.
Large-scale low-value content created primarily to manipulate search traffic or advertising revenue can create problems.
Partially.
Existing pages can continue earning without a new sale being actively handled, but publishers still need to maintain:
Traffic
Content
Site performance
Ad policies
Privacy requirements
AdSense is most attractive when a website receives substantial informational traffic that would otherwise be difficult to monetize directly.
For a small site with little traffic, revenue is usually limited.
The real asset is not the AdSense account.
It is the audience.
