Faceless YouTube refers to operating a YouTube channel without making the creator's face the main on-screen identity. Videos may instead use narration, screen recordings, animation, original graphics, stock footage, licensed clips, gameplay, demonstrations, or other visuals.
It is not a separate YouTube program or monetization category. A faceless channel is subject to the same monetization, copyright, and content rules as other YouTube channels.
Item | Details |
|---|---|
Face required | No |
Channel creation cost | Free |
Minimum equipment | Existing computer or smartphone can be enough |
Common formats | Narrated explainers, documentaries, tutorials, screen recordings, animation, list videos, Shorts |
Voice required | No, but narration is common |
AI voice allowed | Not automatically prohibited |
Main revenue sources | YouTube ads, Premium revenue, affiliate marketing, sponsorships, products, memberships |
Current full YPP ad threshold | 1,000 subscribers + 4,000 qualified watch hours in 12 months, or 10M qualified Shorts views in 90 days |
Planned threshold from February 1, 2027 | 1,000 subscribers + 8,000 qualified watch hours, or 20M qualified Shorts views |
Major risk | Repetitive, mass-produced, reused, or copyright-infringing content |
The important distinction is not whether the creator appears on camera. YouTube's monetization policies focus on whether content is original, authentic, sufficiently differentiated, and compliant with its other policies.
Faceless channels use the same YouTube revenue system as other eligible YouTube channels.
There is no reliable platform-wide dataset showing the typical income of faceless channels specifically.
Creators who accept YouTube's Watch Page Monetization Module receive 55% of net advertising revenue from ads displayed or streamed on eligible public watch-page videos.
This is a revenue-share percentage rather than a guaranteed RPM.
Actual revenue per 1,000 views varies according to factors including audience geography, advertiser demand, subject, season, video length, ad availability, and viewer behavior.
A 2025 Digiday report interviewed six YouTube creators and found their reported long-form RPMs were generally US$3–6 per 1,000 views.
These were individual creator results, not a representative sample of all YouTube channels.
At those observed RPMs, a purely illustrative calculation would be:
Long-form views | Illustration at US$3 RPM | Illustration at US$6 RPM |
|---|---|---|
10,000 | US$30 | US$60 |
100,000 | US$300 | US$600 |
1M | US$3,000 | US$6,000 |
These calculations show what those particular RPM levels would produce. They are not expected or guaranteed YouTube earnings.
Shorts use a different revenue-sharing system.
YouTube allocates eligible Shorts Feed advertising revenue through its Creator Pool and pays creators 45% of the revenue allocated to them.
A faceless channel can be started without purchasing a camera.
Requirement | Minimum option | Cost | Priority | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Google account | Existing or new account | Free | Essential | Required to create the channel |
YouTube channel | YouTube | Free | Essential | Required to upload videos |
Computer or smartphone | Existing device | $0 additional | Essential | Used for production and upload |
Video editor | Free editor | Free | Essential | Used to assemble visuals and audio |
Visual material | Original media, screen recordings, Pexels, Pixabay | Free |
Faceless does not mean one production method.
Common for:
software;
programming;
design;
business tools;
games;
technical education.
The screen itself supplies much of the visual content, which can significantly reduce the need for stock footage.
The creator writes a script and combines narration with:
original graphics;
diagrams;
photographs;
licensed footage;
animation;
screen captures.
This format is common in educational, business, history, science, and documentary-style channels.
Characters, motion graphics, diagrams, or fully animated scenes replace the presenter.
Animation can remove the need for filming but usually increases editing or production work.
Narration is placed over licensed stock images or footage.
Pexels currently permits its photos and videos to be used for free, including commercial use, without mandatory attribution, subject to its license restrictions.
Pixabay similarly permits free use, adaptation, and generally does not require attribution, while prohibiting some uses such as distributing the original content on a standalone basis.
Having permission to use stock media does not automatically make a channel eligible for YouTube monetization. YouTube separately evaluates whether the resulting videos provide sufficient original value.
Faceless Shorts may use:
The format materially affects production economics.
For example:
Software tutorial
Research → screen recording → narration → edit → thumbnail → upload
Narrated documentary
Research → script → narration → source visuals → edit → thumbnail → upload
Animated explainer
Research → script → voice → storyboard → animation → edit → upload
The cost and time required per video can differ substantially between these formats.
A Google Account can be used to create a YouTube channel.
YouTube allows creators to make either a personal channel or a channel associated with a business or other name.
A channel can therefore operate under a brand name without using the creator's personal name as its public identity.
For informational videos, research is often one of the most important production steps.
Keep the underlying sources used for factual material, especially for:
financial claims;
news;
health or scientific information;
statistics;
product specifications;
laws or regulations.
Automating the writing process does not remove responsibility for the accuracy of the final video.
The script should contain enough original narrative, analysis, explanation, entertainment, or other value to distinguish the video from the underlying materials used to create it.
This is particularly important for channels relying heavily on stock footage, screenshots, third-party clips, or AI-generated material.
Faceless channels do not have a separate monetization threshold.
In countries where YouTube's expanded YPP is available, a channel can qualify for certain fan-funding and Shopping features with:
500 subscribers;
3 public uploads during the previous 90 days; and
either 3,000 qualified public watch hours during the previous 365 days or 3M qualified Shorts views during the previous 90 days.
This tier does not provide the full watch-page and Shorts advertising revenue share.
As of August 2026, the standard advertising revenue threshold is:
1,000 subscribers + 4,000 qualified public watch hours during the previous 12 months; or
1,000 subscribers + 10M qualified public Shorts views during the previous 90 days.
Watch time from the Shorts Feed does not count toward the 4,000-hour long-form requirement.
Reaching a numerical threshold does not automatically guarantee admission. YouTube reviews the channel for compliance with its monetization policies.
YouTube has announced that beginning February 1, 2027, the advertising and YouTube Premium entry requirement for new YPP creators will increase to:
1,000 subscribers + 8,000 qualified public watch hours during the previous 365 days; or
1,000 subscribers + 20M qualified public Shorts views during the previous 90 days.
YouTube states that creators already participating in YPP will not lose their status because of this threshold change.
The earlier 500-subscriber tier for fan funding and Shopping is not part of this announced increase.
Using AI tools does not automatically make a channel ineligible for monetization.
The larger risk is producing content that YouTube considers repetitive, mass-produced, or insufficiently original.
YouTube requires creators to disclose realistic content that has been meaningfully altered or synthetically generated.
Examples include AI content that:
makes a real person appear to say or do something they did not;
alters footage of a real event or place;
creates a realistic scene that never occurred.
YouTube provides an AI-use disclosure setting in the upload workflow.
Using AI for a script draft, production assistance, captions, or other non-misleading production functions does not mean every video automatically requires the same disclosure.
YouTube updated its monetization wording in July 2025 to explicitly clarify that repetitive or mass-produced material is covered by its inauthentic content policy.
Examples YouTube identifies as potentially ineligible include:
repetitive videos with little educational or narrative value;
videos made from a nearly identical template with minimal variation;
image slideshows or scrolling text with little or no commentary;
generic AI-generated content that appears mass-produced and lacks original perspective.
The practical issue for a faceless AI channel is therefore not simply:
Was AI used?
It is:
Does each video contain meaningful original value and enough substantive difference to justify monetization?
Reused content is one of the most important risks for faceless channels.
YouTube describes reused content as republishing material already available on YouTube or elsewhere without significant original commentary, substantive modification, or added educational or entertainment value.
Examples that YouTube says can qualify for monetization include:
clips used for critical review;
edited third-party footage with an added storyline and commentary;
sports footage accompanied by explanation;
reaction content with commentary;
reused footage with substantive audio and visual editing that makes the new work distinct.
Examples that can fail monetization include:
compilations of television or movie clips with little narrative;
short videos compiled from other social platforms;
collections of other artists' songs;
content uploaded repeatedly by many creators;
promotion of other people's content;
downloaded material with only minimal changes.
Importantly, reused-content monetization policy is separate from copyright.
A creator can have permission to use material and still fail YouTube's reused-content monetization review if the final channel adds too little original value.
A faceless channel frequently relies more heavily on third-party visual and audio material than a creator filming themselves, making rights management particularly important.
Giving credit to the original copyright owner does not by itself create permission or fair use.
Likewise, writing statements such as:
No copyright infringement intended
does not automatically provide legal protection.
YouTube notes that fair use is determined under applicable law and ultimately by courts rather than automatically by YouTube.
Different countries also have different copyright exceptions.
Lower-risk sources include:
media created by the channel;
properly licensed stock material;
YouTube Audio Library music;
appropriately licensed music;
legitimate public-domain works.
Even licensed material should be checked against the applicable terms before monetized use.
Creating a YouTube channel and uploading videos does not require a publishing fee.
Free video editors can be sufficient to start.
CapCut, for example, offers free editing functionality and a paid Pro product. CapCut states that Pro pricing varies by country, device, and available promotions rather than having one universal global price.
ElevenLabs currently offers:
Plan | Price | Relevant feature |
|---|---|---|
Free | US$0/mo | 10,000 monthly credits |
Starter | US$6/mo | Commercial license, 30,000 credits |
Creator | US$22/mo standard listed tier | Higher usage and professional voice cloning |
Creators should verify the current usage and licensing rules before commercial publication.
Pexels and Pixabay provide free media that can be useful for basic faceless video production.
Premium stock subscriptions can provide larger libraries or different licensing options but are not required for a minimum setup.
The YouTube Audio Library provides free production music and sound effects.
Paid music-licensing services are optional.
Once a channel outsources production, labor can become its largest cost.
Typical outsourced roles include:
The useful basic calculation for a monetized channel is:
Revenue per video − production cost per video = contribution before overhead
For example, paying writers, voice actors, and editors makes little economic sense if the average completed video costs more to produce than the revenue or customer value it generates.
A channel should therefore track:
production cost per video;
views per video;
long-term views from older videos;
RPM;
advertising revenue;
affiliate or sponsor revenue;
revenue attributable to products or services;
contractor costs;
software costs.
A video that initially appears unprofitable can become profitable later if it continues receiving views for months or years, while a high-view Short may still produce little advertising profit if its RPM is very low.
To participate in YPP, creators must meet requirements that include:
living in a country or region where YPP is available;
having no active Community Guidelines strikes;
enabling two-step verification;
having access to YouTube's advanced features;
linking an active AdSense for YouTube account or creating one through YouTube Studio.
Meeting subscriber and watch-time thresholds is not enough.
The channel must comply with YouTube's monetization policies, including the rules covering inauthentic and reused content.
The creator needs appropriate rights or another valid legal basis for third-party:
footage;
images;
music;
sound effects;
scripts;
graphics.
The fact that content is publicly accessible online does not make it free to reuse commercially.
Realistic altered or synthetic material must be disclosed when it falls within YouTube's disclosure requirements.
A channel may avoid filming a presenter while still requiring substantial work in:
research;
scripting;
narration;
sourcing;
editing;
thumbnails;
publishing;
rights management.
Automation can reduce some labor but can also produce repetitive material that creates monetization problems.
YouTube's inauthentic-content rules specifically address repetitive and mass-produced material.
A production system designed mainly to generate many near-identical AI videos creates a greater policy risk than one producing materially distinct, useful videos.
Copyright permission and YPP originality are separate issues.
Even legally usable footage may contribute to a channel failing monetization review when the creator adds insufficient original value.
Creator data reported by Digiday showed Shorts RPMs of less than US$0.20 among interviewed creators, versus US$3–6 for their long-form videos.
A Shorts-first business may therefore require very large view counts or additional monetization models.
The announced February 1, 2027 change doubles the long-form watch-time requirement from 4,000 to 8,000 hours and the Shorts requirement from 10M to 20M views for new creators seeking advertising and Premium revenue sharing.
This materially increases the audience requirement for channels planning to monetize primarily through YouTube ads.
Yes.
YouTube does not require creators to appear on camera to participate in the YouTube Partner Program. Faceless channels remain subject to the same eligibility and monetization policies as other channels.
The important requirement is creating compliant, sufficiently original and authentic content rather than showing a face.
Yes, if you already own a suitable smartphone or computer.
A YouTube channel is free to create. Free editing software, creator-recorded narration, YouTube Audio Library music, and appropriately licensed free stock media can reduce additional startup spending to $0.
AI voice use is not automatically disqualifying.
The finished channel still needs to meet YouTube's originality and monetization requirements, and realistic synthetic or meaningfully altered content may require disclosure depending on what has been generated or altered.
Creators should also verify that their text-to-speech service permits commercial use under the plan they use.
Potentially.
YouTube's policy does not simply ban content because AI was involved. However, its inauthentic-content policy makes repetitive, mass-produced, templated content with little original value ineligible for monetization.
A channel that automatically produces large numbers of nearly interchangeable videos therefore carries significant monetization risk.
Their current licenses permit broad commercial use subject to their respective restrictions.
However, licensing and YouTube monetization are separate issues.
Uploading stock footage with minimal original contribution can still create a reused-content or inauthentic-content problem even when the footage itself was legally licensed.
Credit alone does not create permission or automatically make the use fair.
YouTube also applies its reused-content monetization policy independently of copyright, meaning even content used with permission can fail YPP review when it adds insufficient original value.
Shorts generally produce much lower advertising revenue per view than long-form videos.
In Digiday's 2025 interviews, six creators reported Shorts RPMs below US$0.20, compared with US$3–6 for their long-form content.
The report also included faceless Shorts operator Bennett Santora, whose network of short-form channels reported approximately US$0.15–0.30 RPM while generating tens of millions of monthly views.
Those are individual operator results and should not be treated as the normal RPM for faceless Shorts channels.
An illustrative calculation using that observed US$0.15–0.30 range would be:
Shorts views | US$0.15 RPM illustration | US$0.30 RPM illustration |
|---|---|---|
100,000 | US$15 | US$30 |
1M | US$150 | US$300 |
10M | US$1,500 | US$3,000 |
Large Shorts view counts can therefore produce much less advertising revenue than an equal number of long-form views.
Eligible YPP creators can also receive revenue when YouTube Premium subscribers watch their content.
This does not require the creator to appear on camera.
Creators who qualify for supported fan-funding features can earn through:
channel memberships;
Super Chat;
Super Stickers;
Super Thanks.
YouTube pays creators 70% of net revenue from these Commerce Product features.
A faceless channel can also use Affiliate Marketing.
Examples include:
software tutorials linking to the software;
product comparisons linking to retailers;
equipment channels linking to the equipment discussed;
business videos linking to online services.
Affiliate income depends on clicks, conversion rates, product prices, and program commissions rather than YouTube's advertising RPM.
A company may pay to be mentioned or integrated into a video.
A creator does not need to show their face to sell sponsorship inventory. Commercial value depends more on audience size, subject, geography, viewer trust, and purchase intent.
There is no universal sponsorship rate that applies to faceless channels.
A channel can also direct viewers toward:
digital products;
courses;
software;
newsletters;
consulting;
freelance services;
e-commerce products.
In this model, YouTube functions partly as a customer-acquisition channel rather than only as an advertising business.
Essential |
Licensing must still be checked |
Music / sound effects | YouTube Audio Library | Free | Optional | Copyright-safe tracks available |
Narration | Your own voice | $0 additional | Optional | No camera required |
Thumbnail | Free design/editor tools | Free | Recommended | Custom thumbnail production |
Someone who already owns a suitable device can therefore create and publish a faceless video for $0 additional.
The cheapest setup should not be confused with the easiest way to produce videos at scale.
Text-to-speech can replace human narration for formats where synthetic narration is appropriate.
ElevenLabs currently offers a Free plan with 10,000 credits per month.
Its Starter plan is US$6/mo and adds a commercial license, instant voice cloning, and 30,000 monthly credits.
A creator intending to monetize generated voice output should check the applicable commercial-use terms of the selected plan rather than assuming that all free AI voice services permit commercial use.
As production grows, optional spending can include:
premium text-to-speech;
stock footage subscriptions;
music licensing;
video editing software;
thumbnail software;
scriptwriters;
researchers;
voice actors;
editors;
thumbnail designers.
None of these are universal requirements for starting the first channel.
narration;
captions;
original graphics;
demonstrations;
animation;
licensed clips;
short explanations.
Shorts can accumulate large numbers of views, but observed advertising RPMs are commonly much lower than long-form video RPMs.
Common choices include:
creator's own voice;
hired voice actor;
text-to-speech.
A creator can remain visually anonymous while still using their real voice.
Alternatively, synthetic narration can remove the need to record audio manually.
AI narration by itself is not the central monetization issue. Originality and the overall production are more important.
Useful sources include:
original footage;
screen recordings;
original diagrams;
original animation;
licensed stock media;
public-domain material;
properly licensed third-party assets.
Pexels and Pixabay are examples of services offering free stock material under their respective licenses.
Do not assume that a video found on YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, a news site, or another website can simply be downloaded and reused.
YouTube Studio includes an Audio Library containing royalty-free production music and sound effects.
YouTube describes Audio Library tracks as copyright-safe for use on YouTube.
Some tracks require attribution, so the individual track conditions should still be checked.
Music obtained elsewhere requires separate attention to its license.
Editing can include:
pacing;
visual changes;
captions;
diagrams;
zooms;
graphics;
sound effects;
background music;
transitions;
on-screen evidence.
For content using material from other sources, substantive editing and original narrative can also help demonstrate that the final work is meaningfully different.
Simply placing copied clips behind an AI voice does not necessarily create monetizable original content.
The thumbnail and title determine how the video is presented to potential viewers.
They should accurately represent the content rather than make misleading claims solely to increase clicks.
No face is required in a thumbnail.
Upload the video through YouTube Studio and complete relevant settings including:
title;
description;
thumbnail;
audience;
visibility;
monetization settings when eligible;
altered or synthetic content disclosure when applicable.
Useful metrics include:
impressions;
click-through rate;
views;
audience retention;
watch time;
subscribers gained;
returning viewers;
RPM after monetization;
revenue by video;
conversion to affiliate offers or products when applicable.
A channel should evaluate the economics per video rather than only total subscriber count.
researcher;
scriptwriter;
voice actor;
editor;
animator;
thumbnail designer;
channel manager.
There is no reliable universal outsourcing price because video length, editing complexity, country, turnaround time, expertise, and quality requirements differ substantially.
A channel should calculate its own production cost per video before scaling outsourcing.
As of August 2026, full advertising revenue sharing normally requires 1,000 subscribers plus either 4,000 qualified public watch hours in the previous 12 months or 10M qualified Shorts views in the previous 90 days.
YouTube has announced that for new creators this changes on February 1, 2027 to 1,000 subscribers plus either 8,000 qualified watch hours or 20M qualified Shorts views.
A lower 500-subscriber YPP entry tier exists in eligible regions for certain fan-funding and Shopping features, subject to additional activity and viewing thresholds.
They have very different economics.
In Digiday's 2025 interviews, six creators reported long-form RPMs of US$3–6 while their Shorts RPMs remained below US$0.20. One operator of dedicated faceless Shorts channels reported roughly US$0.15–0.30 Shorts RPM.
Those results are not universal rates, but they illustrate why a Shorts channel can require substantially more views to generate the same advertising revenue as a long-form channel.
