Canva is an online design platform used to create graphics, presentations, social media content, videos, documents, websites, print materials, and digital products.
It is widely used by creators, freelancers, marketers, small businesses, and print-on-demand sellers because it reduces the need for advanced design software.
For business use, Canva's main value is speed. Templates, stock assets, editing tools, brand kits, and AI features can help users create marketing and commercial content without building every design from scratch.
However, commercial use is subject to Canva's content licensing rules. Canva content generally cannot be resold or redistributed as standalone assets.

$250/year per person
It includes Canva Pro features plus additional tools for businesses and teams.

Canva has also advertised Canva Business at approximately $20 per person per month, depending on billing structure and market.
There is no minimum team size.
A solo marketer or business owner can also use the plan.
Canva Teams is no longer available for new subscriptions or upgrades.
Existing Canva Teams customers can continue using their existing plans and pricing.
New users who need team collaboration are generally directed toward Canva Business.
This is important when comparing older Canva reviews or pricing guides because many still refer to Canva Teams as the current team plan.
Canva allows many designs created on the platform to be used commercially.
Examples can include:
Advertising
Social media marketing
Websites
Sales materials
Printed products
E-books
Presentations
Client work
Print-on-demand products
Digital products
However, Canva's license applies differently depending on the content used inside the design.
The key principle is that a commercial product should generally be an original design, not simply a Canva asset resold unchanged.
Canva explicitly allows users to create digital and physical products for sale, subject to its license terms.
Examples include:
Posters
T-shirts
Mugs
E-books
Workbooks
Invitations
Social media products
Print-on-demand products
Other designed merchandise
The final product should combine Canva content with additional design work to create a new creative work.
For example, creating a poster using typography, multiple graphic elements, layout work, and original content can be acceptable.
Simply downloading a Canva illustration and selling that illustration by itself generally is not.
Canva content cannot generally be resold or distributed on a standalone basis.
Examples of problematic uses include:
Downloading a Canva stock image and selling it as stock photography
Reselling a Canva illustration by itself
Selling a Canva icon pack made entirely from unchanged Canva icons
Redistributing Canva stock assets
Claiming ownership of Canva-provided content
The commercial value should come from the user's original design rather than the resale of Canva's content library.
Template selling requires additional care.
Canva allows users to create original designs and templates, but the licensing rules for Pro Content can restrict how content is redistributed.
A seller should not simply modify an existing Canva template slightly and resell it as their own.
A stronger approach is to create the layout and design substantially from scratch and use Canva assets only within the limits of the applicable license.
Creators selling editable Canva templates should review Canva's current Content License Agreement before launching a template business.
Canva can be used to create designs for print-on-demand products.
Examples include:
T-shirts
Hoodies
Posters
Mugs
Tote bags
Stickers
A typical workflow might be:
Create an original design in Canva.
Export the design.
Upload it to a print-on-demand platform.
Create product mockups.
List the product for sale.
The print provider produces and ships orders.
The design must still comply with Canva's content licensing requirements.
Canva assets should not simply be used unchanged as the primary product being sold.
Freelancers can use Canva to create designs for clients.
Common services include:
Social media graphics
Presentations
Marketing materials
Advertisements
Branding assets
Business documents
Video content
However, licensing becomes especially important when transferring designs or intellectual property to clients.
A freelancer should understand whether third-party Canva assets are licensed for the intended client use rather than promising ownership of assets they do not own.
Canva can be used to create logos, but there is an important limitation.
Canva library content generally cannot be used in a way that gives the user exclusive ownership over the underlying Canva asset.
This can become a problem when a business wants to register a logo as a trademark.
For a trademark intended to be legally exclusive, businesses should use:
Original graphics
Original typography arrangements
Assets they fully own
Properly licensed exclusive content
Using commonly available Canva graphics as the main element of a trademark can create ownership and registration problems.
Canva's library contains different types of content.
These can include:
Free Content
Pro Content
Branded Content
Public Domain or CC0 Content
AI-generated Canva Content
Different licensing rules can apply.
If a design combines Free Content and Pro Content, Canva states that the stricter Pro Content rules apply.
Users should check the source information for individual assets when licensing is important.
A new creator or freelancer does not necessarily need Canva Pro immediately.
Use the Free plan to test whether Canva fits the workflow.
Upgrade when premium assets or productivity features begin saving meaningful time.
Set up consistent:
Colors
Fonts
Logo placement
Layout styles
Social media formats
Consistency can reduce design time across future content.
Create reusable internal templates for recurring business needs such as:
Instagram posts
YouTube thumbnails
Sales presentations
Advertisements
Newsletter graphics
Product images
The main productivity benefit of Canva comes from reusing systems rather than designing every asset from scratch.
Choose an export format based on the destination.
Examples:
PNG for web graphics
JPG for smaller images
PDF for documents and print
MP4 for video
SVG where available and appropriate
Print products also require sufficient resolution and correct dimensions.
Commercial use does not mean every Canva asset can be resold freely.
Before building a product business around Canva content, verify:
Canva can reduce the technical barrier to offering simple design services.
Common freelance services include:
Social media design
Presentation design
Lead magnets
E-books
YouTube thumbnails
Advertising creatives
Print materials
Simple video editing
The software itself is not the main competitive advantage.
A freelancer still needs:
Design judgment
Client communication
Fast delivery
Clear positioning
Portfolio quality
Because Canva is widely accessible, basic Canva skills alone may not justify premium freelance rates.
Canva is commonly used to create products such as:
Planners
Worksheets
E-books
Checklists
Printable guides
Social media templates
Presentations
The economics can be attractive because digital products have little incremental production cost after creation.
However, the seller still needs:
Original design
Useful content
Distribution
Marketing
Licensing compliance
Canva makes production easier but does not create customer demand.
Businesses can use Canva for:
Social posts
Ads
Email graphics
Presentations
Sales documents
Video
Print marketing
Brand assets
For small businesses without a dedicated design team, Canva can significantly reduce the cost and time required to produce everyday marketing materials.
Larger organizations may use Canva Business or Enterprise to manage shared brands, permissions, approvals, and collaboration.
Canva | Traditional Professional Design Software | |
|---|---|---|
Learning curve | Low | Higher |
Templates | Extensive | Less central |
Browser-based | Yes | Often desktop-focused |
Collaboration | Strong | Depends on product |
Advanced design control | More limited | Higher |
Fast content production | Strong | Depends on skill |
Suitable for non-designers | Very strong | Less so |
Complex professional work | More limited | Stronger |
Canva is especially effective for high-volume everyday content.
Advanced illustration, complex photo manipulation, professional publishing, or highly customized brand work may still benefit from specialized software.
Non-designers can create usable marketing materials quickly.
Templates reduce the time required to start new designs.
Canva combines stock images, graphics, video, audio, and fonts within the same platform.
Canva can support:
Freelancing
Digital products
Print-on-demand
Marketing
Content creation
Online stores
Many users can begin without paying for software.
Using Canva content does not mean you own the underlying photo, icon, illustration, template, or other asset.
Canva content generally cannot be downloaded and resold by itself.
Selling editable templates can be more complicated than selling finished designs because buyers may gain access to licensed Canva content.
Common Canva library elements may not be suitable for trademarks requiring exclusive rights.
Pro may be inexpensive for one creator, but business plans charged per person can become more expensive as a team grows.
Canva lowers the barrier to creating digital products and freelance designs.
This also means many competitors can create similar-looking products.
Original concepts, strong content, branding, and distribution remain important.

Be careful when clients expect exclusive ownership of third-party Canva assets.
Using standard Canva library assets as part of a trademark can create problems because those assets are available to other Canva users and are not exclusively owned by you.
For an important trademark, original assets are safer.
