[1][1]Fiverr's figures describe services sold through its marketplace rather than the revenue distribution of AI automation agencies generally.
AI automation agencies commonly sell fixed-scope implementations, hourly consulting, and ongoing maintenance rather than earning from a single standardized revenue model.
Fiverr's 2026 marketplace analysis reported AI and automation projects averaging approximately US$75–520 per project, with hourly rates of US$18–150 across the analyzed services. More specific ranges included US$35–165/hr for process automation specialists and broader AI-specialist rates from US$10–200/hr, depending on experience and specialization.
These figures are marketplace service prices, not agency profit. An agency may charge substantially more for projects involving multiple systems, custom code, security requirements, production monitoring, or ongoing support.
Recurring revenue can come from monthly retainers covering:
workflow monitoring;
error handling;
integration changes;
prompt or AI-agent updates;
new automation requests;
API and software administration.
Fiverr's cost analysis also lists US$100–500 as a typical marketplace cost for a major integration update and US$50–200 for training sessions, illustrating additional services that may be sold after the initial implementation.
A solo operator can begin without renting an office or buying servers. Most early client systems can be built with cloud automation platforms and usage-based APIs.
The following is a U.S. acquisition-cost example rather than a universal global price.
Requirement | Minimum option | Cost | Priority | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Laptop | Dell 15 Laptop | US$449.99 | Essential | Current Dell U.S. offer; sufficient for browser-based automation work |
Automation platform | Make Free | Free | Essential | Up to 1,000 credits/month |
AI API balance | OpenAI prepaid API credits | US$5 | Essential for AI workflows | Minimum initial prepaid purchase |
Client communication | Gmail or equivalent free account | Free | Essential | Paid business email can be added later |

Start with a process where automation has measurable value.
Common examples include:
website lead → CRM → sales notification;
inbound email → classification → draft response;
form submission → document generation;
support request → AI classification → ticket routing;
meeting notes → CRM update → follow-up task;
invoice or PDF → data extraction → accounting system;
CRM status change → personalized customer message.
A narrow workflow is easier to scope, test, price, and support than an open-ended promise to "automate the business."
Document:
trigger;
input data;
systems involved;
decisions currently made by humans;
output;
failure cases;
volume;
permissions required.
This determines whether the project needs a no-code workflow, an AI model, custom API work, or a combination.
Visual workflow platforms can handle many integrations without maintaining a custom backend.
Make currently provides:
Free — 1,000 credits/month;
Core — US$12/month for 10,000 credits;
Pro — US$21/month for 10,000 credits;
Teams — US$38/month for 10,000 credits.
A module action normally consumes a credit.
Model | What the client pays for |
|---|---|
Fixed implementation | Building and deploying a defined automation |
Hourly consulting | Process analysis, troubleshooting, or development |
Monthly retainer | Monitoring, maintenance, improvements, and support |
Automation audit | Identifying processes worth automating |
Integration work | Connecting APIs, CRMs, databases, and other systems |
Training | Teaching the client's staff to operate or modify workflows |
A project fee should not be treated as profit. Software subscriptions, API usage, contractors, sales time, revisions, support, and unbillable discovery work reduce the effective hourly return.
Platform | Example plan | Current price | Billing unit |
|---|---|---|---|
Make | Free | Free | 1,000 credits/mo |
Make | Core | US$12/mo | 10,000 credits/mo |
Make | Pro | US$21/mo | 10,000 credits/mo |
Zapier | Professional | US$19.99/mo billed annually | 750 tasks/mo |
n8n | Starter | €20/mo billed annually | 2,500 executions |
n8n | Pro | €50/mo billed annually | 10,000 executions |
The cheapest platform is not always the cheapest production architecture. A multi-step workflow may consume billing units very differently across platforms.
Purpose | Example | Entry option | When it becomes useful |
|---|---|---|---|
Workflow automation | Make | Free | Fast visual integrations |
Workflow automation | n8n | Self-hosted Community Edition | More technical/custom workflows |
Workflow automation | Zapier | Free or Professional | Large app ecosystem and client familiarity |
AI | OpenAI API | Usage-based | Classification, extraction, generation |
Messaging | Twilio | Usage-based | SMS, WhatsApp, voice workflows |
Business email | Google Workspace | US$8.40/user/mo flexible | Professional client communication |
An agency does not need every tool. The stack should follow the client workflow rather than forcing every client onto one platform.
There is no universal certification or AI-automation-agency license that applies worldwide.
Actual legal requirements depend on where the operator and client are located and may include ordinary business registration, taxation, privacy, marketing, telecommunications, or industry-specific rules.
Operationally, the work requires the ability to handle:
APIs and authentication;
workflow logic;
structured data;
webhooks;
error handling;
client system permissions;
AI model limitations;
testing and production monitoring.
Projects processing customer, employee, financial, health, or other sensitive data require additional attention to the client's security and regulatory obligations.
A failed workflow may drop leads, duplicate messages, overwrite records, or prevent downstream work from occurring. Production automations therefore need logging, error handling, and an escalation process.
AI-generated classifications, extracted values, and messages can be incorrect even when the workflow itself runs successfully.
High-impact actions should not depend on unchecked model output when an error could create financial, legal, privacy, or customer-service consequences.
Automation projects often require access to email, CRM, databases, cloud services, or API keys. Agencies should minimize permissions and avoid unnecessary long-term possession of client credentials.
Automation platforms, AI APIs, messaging APIs, databases, and other services may all bill by usage.
For example, Make counts module actions as credits, n8n Cloud bills around workflow executions, Zapier uses tasks, OpenAI bills model usage, and Twilio bills communication usage. A workflow that is inexpensive during testing may therefore cost more once client volume increases.
External APIs, authentication methods, software fields, AI models, and automation-platform behavior can change. A workflow that operates today may require modification later, which is one reason maintenance can be sold separately from initial implementation.
You can learn and prototype with free automation tiers, but a true zero-cost setup assumes that required hardware is already owned.
In the U.S. minimum example above, buying the computer plus the minimum OpenAI API balance costs about US$454.99. Existing hardware can reduce the additional cash requirement substantially.
Not every workflow requires custom code. Platforms such as Make, Zapier, and n8n can connect many services visually.
Coding becomes more useful when a project requires unsupported APIs, custom authentication, complex data transformations, databases, custom applications, or infrastructure outside the automation platform.
A bounded workflow with an observable business result is easier to deliver than a general "AI transformation."
Examples include transferring qualified leads into a CRM, extracting structured information from inbound documents, or routing incoming support requests.
For production client systems, client-owned accounts make recurring costs, data ownership, access, and handoff clearer.
An agency can include software costs in a managed-service price, but this also makes the agency responsible for tracking usage and vendor cost changes.
There is no standard agency rate.
Fiverr's 2026 marketplace data found AI and automation experts at roughly US$18–150 per hour overall, while process-automation specialists ranged from approximately US$35–165 per hour. Fixed projects in the analyzed marketplace commonly ranged into the hundreds of dollars.
Larger custom integrations, enterprise work, and ongoing managed automation are not represented by a simple marketplace average.
Not necessarily.
Text-model API usage can be inexpensive for small workflows. Automation-platform usage, messaging volume, databases, third-party SaaS, implementation labor, support, and client acquisition can outweigh model-token costs depending on the project.

Business email | Google Workspace Business Starter | US$8.40/user/mo | Recommended | U.S. flexible-plan price |
Minimum acquisition cost in this example: US$454.99, using the laptop, Make Free, and the minimum OpenAI prepaid balance.
An existing suitable computer can reduce the additional purchase cost by US$449.99, but the laptop acquisition price is included above rather than assuming the entrant already owns one.
A domain, custom email, paid automation plan, CRM, and other agency software can be added after obtaining clients.
n8n Cloud uses workflow-execution pricing instead:
Starter — €20/month billed annually for 2,500 workflow executions;
Pro — €50/month billed annually for 10,000 executions.
n8n also provides a self-hosted Community Edition.
Zapier Professional starts at US$19.99/month when billed annually, with 750 tasks per month. Zapier's 2026 AI pricing can consume multiple tasks per AI step: Standard uses a 1× multiplier, Advanced 3×, and Premium 5×; using your own supported AI account uses a 1× multiplier.
These billing differences matter when estimating a client's recurring automation cost.
Typical integrations include:
CRM;
email;
spreadsheets;
forms;
calendars;
databases;
Slack or Microsoft Teams;
customer-support software;
accounting software;
messaging APIs;
AI APIs.
Whenever possible, use client-owned accounts rather than permanently operating production systems through agency-owned credentials.
AI models are useful for tasks such as:
classification;
extraction from unstructured text;
summarization;
drafting;
routing;
structured-data generation;
document interpretation.
Deterministic operations such as copying a customer ID between systems generally do not need an AI model.
For example, OpenAI currently prices GPT-5 mini at US$0.25 per 1M input tokens and US$2 per 1M output tokens. API cost therefore depends on actual workload rather than a fixed per-client subscription.
New OpenAI prepaid API accounts require a minimum US$5 initial credit purchase.
Production testing should include:
missing fields;
malformed data;
duplicate events;
expired authentication;
API rate limits;
model outputs in the wrong format;
timeouts;
downstream service outages;
incorrect AI classifications.
AI-generated actions that can send messages, change records, spend money, or delete data may require human approval or deterministic validation.
The project should define who is responsible for:
failed executions;
API bills;
software subscriptions;
credential renewal;
workflow modifications;
vendor changes;
client support.
This is also where a one-time implementation can become a maintenance retainer.
OpenAI's API is usage-based. One current lower-cost model, GPT-5 mini, is priced at:
input: US$0.25 per 1M tokens;
cached input: US$0.025 per 1M tokens;
output: US$2 per 1M tokens.
A production system may also incur charges for other models, tools, storage, search, voice, or third-party APIs.
Customer communication can create a separate usage bill.
For example, Twilio currently lists U.S. long-code SMS at US$0.0083 per outbound segment and US$0.0083 per inbound segment, before applicable carrier fees. A leased U.S. long-code number starts at US$1.15/month.
Messaging pricing differs by country, sender type, carrier, and channel, so U.S. pricing should not be applied globally.
A website is not technically required to deliver automation work, but a professional domain and email are common upgrades.
Namecheap currently lists a one-year .com registration at US$11.08 and renewal at US$18.48, with promotional pricing sometimes lower.
Google Workspace Business Starter costs US$8.40/user/month on the U.S. flexible plan or US$7/user/month with an annual commitment.
