How Are Payment Processing Fees Calculated?

Many providers combine a percentage of the charge with a fixed fee per transaction. Rates can vary by plan, country, card type, and currency, so enter the terms that actually apply.

How Much Will You Receive After Fees?

Subtract both the percentage fee and fixed fee from the customer charge. Refunds, disputes, currency conversion, and taxes are outside this simple calculation.

How Much Should You Charge to Receive a Specific Amount?

Reverse calculation adds the fixed fee to the desired net and divides by one minus the percentage rate. Rounding to the smallest currency unit can create a minor difference.

Formula

  • Fee = Charge × Percentage fee + Fixed fee
  • Net received = Charge − Fee
  • Required charge = (Desired net + Fixed fee) ÷ (1 − Percentage fee)

Example

On a $100 charge with a 2.9% fee plus $0.30, the fee is $3.20 and net proceeds are $96.80.
